Bunny Drop

Usagi Drop is a timeless, heart-warming anime that brings forth a story full of heart, love, and compassion. There are lessons to be learned from Usagi Drop, that I think all of us would benefit from learning. The biggest of all of these, is not to judge those surrounded by pain and suffering for the issues which they never caused. There are many more lessons to be learned from Usagi Drop, which are not lost in the beautiful artistry of this series.

First off, The Story:

Usagi Drop is the story of Daikichi Kawachi and the young girl, Rin Kaga that he adopts upon the death of his grandfather. Rin is the 6 year-old illegitemate daughter of Daikichi's grandfather, and her presence is met by the digust and shame of their mutual relatives. Even Rin's parents and sister react negatively to Rin's presence at their grandfather's funeral. The only people who see Rin for what she is, a vulnerable and upset child, are Daikichi and Haruko Maeda, Daikichi's cousin. Usagi Drop follows Daikichi and Rin's journey as child and guardian over the course of one year, illustrating Daikichi's growth from a bachelor with little worries other than work, and Rin's growth from a frightened and sad child in to one who is energetic, loving, and curious. I also greatly enjoyed the growth of the tertiary characters and the open-ended subplot of Daikichi's internal question and dialogue. 'As someone who is raising a child, is it necessary that I get marrried?' Daikichi eventually comes to the personal conclusion that it isn't a requirement, so long as Rin gets the childhood she deserves.

Next, Animation:

The animation in Usagi Drop is beautiful and incredibly easy on the eyes. The pastel-like color pallette and watercolor-esque style make for a soft and pretty visual to go with a story to match. I greatly appreciated this change of pace from my normal picks, which tend to have bright, overstated visuals.

And then there's Sound:

Usagi Drop benefits from having a wonderful voice cast. You can find talents such as Hiroshi Tsuchida, Sayaka Ohara, Yumi Uchiyama, among many (talented!) others.

Finally, Characters:

Usagi Drop masterfully illustrates the pain of loss and death from the eyes of a child. Rin is naive to the reality which surrounds her, being 6 she lacks the social understanding of why the adults around her do not seem to like her, or why they may feel ashamed of her presence. However, through the loving, nurturing, and kind guidance of Daikichi shows Rin that she can be loved just like her father did before he died. Without going in to too much detail and spoiling the entire plot, the characters in this anime feel real. They're vivid, lively, realistic, and flawed. They're human. And they're really interesting.

Usagi Drop is a fantastic anime for those who want to watch something cute, emotional, and beautiful. It is not full of action, or suspense, or fanservice, but it does have a heartfelt story with characters that come alive and feel realistic. And it is a great example of the use of a somewhat-minimalistic art style and musical score. I highly recommend Usagi Drop to those who may have liked shows such as Sweetness and Lightning, and March Comes in Like a Lion.
