Log Horizon 2

Oct 23, 2016

The very civil civ world of MMORPGS This is a review of both season one and two of Log Horizon. Warning there are some minor spoilers here. The first time watching Log Horizon it was dropped after the episode one because I found it fairly boring. After hearing many positive opinions about it later, I decided to return and give it another try. It does pick up a short way in and becomes interesting in places but never riveting. There is no antagonist and no truly great stakes at play and thus no real drama. The story and world moves along at a gentle high minded gait that is at odds with the... See full review

Active Raid Second

Oct 23, 2016

The Locomotive Losing Steam The first season was enjoyable. The plot was rubbish and the characters were farcical. But it was well presented, humorous and energetic story. It took itself lightly, encouraging the viewer to laugh at all the absurdity. A girl below the age of maturity Asami Kazari joining an elite task force of the police, that is run by another very young but not too sharp woman. Watching Rin drive her miniature hatchback car with the giant Yasuharu crammed into the passenger seat was funny. The Mecha suit dressing corridor was a blast! Command centre in an old style train, not... See full review

Cheating Craft

Oct 23, 2016

Taking exams and need to blow off steam Only watched the first episode of this one. The title “Cheating Craft” sounded interesting, attracted me. This is pure over the top parody of a present obsession with acing the exams to get the best jobs for life in Japan. I am not sure how genuine this phenomenon is in Japan. Do the students with best grades gain exclusive access to the best career positions? I do agree that our contemporary society has developed an unhealthy obsession with a very specific type of education. In the more distant past the majority of people trained up through... Sunday Without God

Oct 23, 2016

If looking for a dose moribund melancholy you could do worse than this. The world as we know it has ended and something uncertain has taken its place. In a kind of supernatural wasteland people aren’t born and don’t die, at least not in the conventional sense. Our chirpy self-assured self-righteous protagonist Ai Astin is born and raised and wanders the world dishing out the platitudes as worldly wise advice. A band of others obediently follow her about. Probably the most interesting character drops out early on leaving Ai with no one to converse with. Most of the rest of the series... See full review

Hitori no Shita: The Outcast

Oct 23, 2016

Buffy the Vampire Slayer of Anime So far I have only watched the first episode. It did all the fundamentals of establishing the world and main characters. But nothing more than that. “Hitori no Shita The Outcast” selling point is in its style. The murky dark ridiculous stupid fun style. The cast are all unintelligent and the atrocious dialogue reflects this. There is something very addictive about watching Morons fight over ancient mystical nonsense like “Big Trouble in Little China”. My instincts say this going to be plenty of farcical fun. It has been placed on my... See full review

Rewrite

Oct 23, 2016

The supernaturalism of the teenage years This reviewer has watched up to and including episode five and has not seen the visual novel it is based upon. Visual novels rarely make good transitions to anime. To suddenly communicate a whole multifaceted supernatural world and large number of characters in a mere twenty minutes is extremely difficult. Failing to do this leaves the first episode feeling like a broken fragment. Rewrite has managed to evade this pitfall by borrowing a feature from Fate/Stay night UBW, the extended opening episode at 45 minutes. This feature works well with more... See full review

New Game!

Oct 22, 2016

This game was not made for me When I sat down to watch the first, and it turns out only, episode of “NEW GAME!” I was expecting to not be taken with it. And I wasn’t I watched this because it is good to try something outside of your comfort zone once in a while. Half an hour is more than long enough to be there in my opinion. This is a story about cute moey girls doing slightly more realistic things than is normal for them. Working in a generic modern office, with the associated comedy, creating video games. If that sounds appealing to you then certainly give this a try... See full review

Ace Attorney

Oct 22, 2016

Cynical cash in on the great game I hate this anime! Because I loved the Ace Attorney games on the Nintendo DS. When I heard about this anime I was ecstatic. Soon the non-game playing world get to bask in the greatness of the man himself Phoenix Wright. The greatest fictional Attorney the world has ever born witness to. Then I watched this. Eleven episodes of it, fewer than half the total. Normally I would have dropped something so terminally mediocre after episode one but in this case my hope based on nostalgia had me cling on for over five wasted hours. I shall not watch anymore. Alderamin on the Sky

Oct 22, 2016

Archetype's bored game Watched only the first episode so I can only talk about that. Unsurprising summary: it failed to hook me. The main six characters behaved like a group of students of latter teenage years about to head off on to a school trip. Not like a group seriously joining officers school and inevitably being shipped out to fight in a war. What did they think about this war, what did they feel about it? Their thoughts and feelings about this war Is never even alluded to. They just exchange wisecracks about family and sexual innuendo. This might not be a bad anime. It might improve... Mob Psycho 100

Oct 22, 2016

This will psych you out a hundred times over I can think of no criticism I have of this anime. Nothing whatsoever. I hate giving five stars more than anything. But I am going to give it to this one. Mob Psycho 100 is about a below average boring physically weak kid who also just happens to have incredible psychic powers that enable him to do absolutely anything besides be a below average boring physically weak kid. Mob wants to become more, he wants to self-improve and with the aid of his life mentor Reigen, an evil spirit and some school mates sets out to do so. Initially this brings him... See full review

Ushio and Tora TV (2016)

Oct 22, 2016

You should go and watch the first 26 episodes here before watching the last 13: http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/ushio-and-tora-tv If you have seen the first three quarters, enjoyed it and are even a bit interested in the actual ending then seeing this is a must. The last thirteen episodes are artistically and narratively consistent with the beginning. The themes become a little darker with comedic aspects diminished for the final, and quite poignant, show down with the big bad.

Ushio and Tora TV

Oct 22, 2016

Time for another teenage boy to… The name of the boy this time is Ushio and his comrade in arms a Tiger demon named Tora. Using a magical weapon called the Beast Spear the two set off on the well-trodden hero’s journey to save the world. Initially the story is episodic with different villains for each of first ten episodes and with no real unifying thread connecting them all. From the quarter mark of the series the details of the main plot and antagonist is gradually dispensed. This works to build up the tension for when it is needed. Simplistic yet aesthetically distinct... See full review

Orange

Oct 21, 2016

Must be only for hardcore romantic types Romance anime or any kind of romance for that matter is pretty far outside of my comfort zone. Orange bored me to the point where I could watch beyond episode two. There was nothing witty or clever in the conversation. The story hook, while interesting enough to keep me around for episode two, was treated too normally.

Berserk (2016)

Oct 21, 2016

Is not going to bring in a new comer to this franchise. Having never watched any of Berserk's precursor material I came to this series with a fresh unbiased perspective. Unfortunately for the world of Berserk what I witnessed in the first episode has put me off of it and he following episodes. The opening episode tells us next to nothing about the world. What it shows us is fragmented and disjointed just like its sloppily juxtaposed hand drawn 2D and CGI artwork. When 2D is drawn over a badly animated model the effect is awful. The world of Berserk is introduced as a violent antagonistic place... See full review

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless

Oct 20, 2016

If you are looking for something to send you softly pleasantly to sleep then... I have seen only the first episode. While it was not bad, there was nothing there the draw me into watching the second episode, so I left it. It is quite a nice softly pleasant slightly humorous show.

A lethargic protagonist surrounded by lax friendly easy going people with no apparent story in sight is far too much listless for me. But if that is what you want then add two stars on to my review.

Watamote: No Matter How I Look at It, It's You Guys' Fault I'm Not Popular!

Oct 18, 2016

Rolemodel candidate of our age anyone? I watched this one as far as episode eight and then stalled because there is loads of other great anime out there. I may return later on. Watamote is about a teenage girl named Tomoko who suffers from severe social anxiety problems. The story (if you could say there is one) follows the minute details of Tomoko's daily life. The principle focus is on her attempts to socially interact with people to comical effect. This show had me laughing and cringing at the same time. I don’t think that has ever happened before. Tomoko is an exceptionally memorable... See full review

Oct 18, 2016

Taboo Tattoo is a clever title and that's about it. I watched episode one of this when it first came out and then watched it no more. At time of writing this review on the 18th of Oct 2016 I can remember nothing about that first episode of Taboo Tattoo. Having read the reviews that subsequently came out I am glad I missed the rest. It turned out exactly how I thought it would at the time. Even though I don't remember what I thought about it back then!

Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero

Oct 18, 2016

Five school girls play around a tree Yuki Yuna didn't do much for me. By the end I was unmoved and felt I had wasted six hours. It is not dreadful though. It has its good points and I can see why some people might greatly enjoy it. I did not find Yuki Yuna, he series that is, to be heroic. No sense of triumph. And for a while I was not sure why. The surrounding world of Yuki Yuna was adrift from the five protagonists resulting in a hero club that felt claustrophobic to me. The five heroines were too self-contained from the world that produced them and they were trying to protect. The... See full review

Giving Good Girls Giant Guns

So what would they do with them?

Well of course they would only do good things. Meaning the laws of physics and probability have to be altered to see that nobody ever gets hurt and the good girls always win and that the bad guys can only be seen to be like rats.

High School Fleet is a story unsure whether it wants to be a farcical comedy or something more serious resulting in an inconsistent narrative. The best parts are the comedic where our girls try to treat the ship like a domestic setting and the cringing worst parts are where the bridge crew... See full review

Active Raid

Jan 31, 2016

This review is written after the release of episode four Active Raid on Crunchy Roll. Active Raid is a fast paced mecha comedy, set in the near future in a highly urbanized Japanese city. Which city is either not stated or I don't remember. Doesn't matter they are all the same anyway. A new international unit called Active Raid is created to tackle rising global crime. They have access to mechas called Will Wear. Though in my mind they are more like elaborate suits of armour than vehicles.       In summary they fight outlaws who use other versions of these mechs/suits to help them... See full review

KonoSuba – God's blessing on this wonderful world!

Jan 22, 2016

Humorous RPG Harem   This review is being written after the release of the second episode. I watched the first episode of KONOSUBA with no preconceived expectations, only the Crunchy Roll synopsis and picture to go by, and I was very much amused and entertained. 'KONOSUBA -God's blessing on this wonderful world!' is a harem. You know the story! A bunch of sexually inexperienced girls congregate around a sexually inexperienced boy while they do something unrelated to their desires. It is too early tell if KONOSUBA is a good harem but it does get a number of the starting aspects correct. There... See full review

Aldnoah.Zero 2nd Season

Aug 12, 2015

Good, not great, Mecha There are spoilers in this review. Aldnoah.Zero is a big disappointment. It starts out promising something very big and then delivers only very little. By the end of the second season everything is right back to where it started as though nothing had happened at all. If this was a skit on the futility of revolution and upheaval then that would be fine, but it's not. It plays everything too strait, as exemplified by the protagonist, and comes across as excruciatingly dull. Many interesting plot devices are introduced and then never used. An ensemble of mostly dull... See full review

White Album 2

Aug 8, 2015

Is love worth it? Obviously not! But if you are one of those people in doubt then you could enjoy this. White Album is an exemplary pure love story accompanied with sentimental rock music. I can say without any doubt that it is a very effective pure love story due to the nauseous melancholic feeling I had throughout the whole series. I revile pure love and I hate sentimentality when set alone. They can be tolerable and even effective when coupled with comedy, drama and tragedy but none of these are present. The tragedy there is in this exists only in an emotional context with no real world... See full review

Akame ga Kill!

Apr 4, 2015

This was tremendous fun to watch! I am just after having watched through Akame ga Kill!. In the earlier episodes I was worried that this was going to turn into another one of those very generic fantasy adventures with strong harem elements. You know where a legendary hero defeats generic bad guy of the week, week after week, until after a mountain load of episodes he finally faces the evil boss and wins the day leaving not a scratch on him or any of his friends. The story will be spliced up slice of life elements with harem antics in-between and loads of filler episodes and fan service galore. Fortunately... See full review

Witch Craft Works

Dec 1, 2014

Somewhat attractive witches bitch and fight each other It needs to be pointed out that this is pure male juvenile entertainment and nothing else. I am pretty sure that this is all that the creators intended to make. There is no intelligence depth or wit here, just superficial brainless fun. To enjoy this you need to turn your brain off before watching. A plot exists and it advances inconsistently towards something or other but it never reaches its final destination, if there ever was one. The male protagonist is an utter void and so is the witch looking after him. But they do not really matter, they... See full review

A good show let down by the hype This anime could have been really great. There was so much potential behind this concept. So very many interesting things they could have done with it .Such as an exploation of a die hard gamer's character set. The real world virtual world juxtaposition. A persn exposed to real possibility of death for the first time and how it changes them. Unfortunately this did not occur and the great pottential of this show was some what wasted. The artwork, music and voice acting is of a very high level. The world created is well realized. The side characters are well fleshed out but... See full review

School Days

Dec 1, 2014

For a more realistic depiction of adolescent school goers What bought me to watch School Days (to the series end) was all the free advertising in the form of forum discussions. Had this not been the case I might have watched the first episode or two and then stopped because there is much in them to grab you. The characters and particularly the protagonist have produced much controversy. More than I think is justified. I would recommend this anime to anyone looking for a more realistic take towards teenage romantic relations. The plot is an average affair of teenage romance and angst leading towards its... I intensely disliked this I watched the first episode of this and thought it was shit. I held my breath and watched a second episode but my thinking did not change. I can only stomach so much shit so I stopped watching. It is about a rich kid. His dad has died (he does not seem to be particularly upset about this). To inherit daddy's big company he must marry a girl within a time limit. With the aide of some of daddy's employees (minions) he gets enrolled in a prestigious school filled with eligible girls. A Weird Romantic Encounter A slightly weird twist on the standard school boy girl romantic affair. The standard dull and slow, 'normal', male archetype lead Akira Tsubaki one day tastes the drool of a new and unusual transfer student Mikoto Urabe and something strange occurs. He becomes addicted to it. The reason for this is peculiarity is never mentioned and our dull male never thinks to ask why it is while our reclusive perhaps repressed female never volunteers anything.
