Kyoto Animation CM: Ikitaku Naru Omise-hen

Mar 25, 2018

This is a TV commercial. It's cute and has a bit of nice fantasy imagery, but that's it.

Violet Evergarden

Mar 19, 2018

This could have been a great show, and it started off with a good premise, but it soon devolved into "melodrama of the week". With each episode, the eponymous character developed a little in some way until the obvious advancement of her own plot line came due. Unfortunately, by this time the forced, trite, and obnoxiously amateurish emotional manipulation had become gallingly apparent, and it frankly ruined the main plot line, even though it was still quite early in the lifetime of the series. Beyond that point it would have taken a near miraculous development of plot to make the show worth... See full review

Rage of Bahamut: Virgin Soul

Aug 2, 2017

You know, against all reason, a shill anime started out decent, turned good, and now has a really nice sequel that seems to be improving over time. Despite making really crappy mobile games, not to mention the really bland Granblue anime, somehow Cygames has stumbled upon a winning storyline and likable, somewhat interesting characters here. This is one of the shows that I look forward to each week.

Knight's & Magic

Aug 2, 2017

More heavily indulgent isekai, but in this case it seems like the author is indulging in love for mecha that fight monsters rather than exclusively focusing on the self-insert main character. It's worth watching so far just to see what robots this kid is going to make, but it's honestly pretty horrible (for the usual reasons) otherwise.

Stan Lee should be taking notes on this instead of trying to compete with it.

In Another World With My Smartphone

Aug 2, 2017

This is so incredibly bad. This show drains the life out of me to the point that I can't even stop watching it. I can't even bring myself to hate it. That's how bland and derivative it is. I think the only saving grace here is that the show itself is completely transparent about being awful. "Hey, this is going to be a pathetic wish-fulfillment anime for the author. We're letting you know in advance that God himself has literally made the main character infalliable and more or less all powerful - as a plot point. As you can probably guess, everyone else in the universe has a single digit IQ and... See full review

Miss Bernard said.

Oct 20, 2016

This is a show created by stuffy, pretentious people who are sick and tired of casual readers and want to caricature them as ignorant posers so that they'll have a shared symbol of scorn. In other words, it's a comedy that's condescending instead of funny.

Muromi-san OVA

Jun 14, 2016

Namiuchigiwa no Muromi-san is a delightfully nonsensical, fast-paced comedy featuring a stoic young fisherman who inadvertently gets involved with a wide assortment of hare-brained mythological characters, beginning with the eponymous mermaid, Muromi. The comedy runs between irreverent, perverted, slapstick, and just plain silly, so there's likely to be something that will get a laugh out of you, provided that you can keep up with the fast pacing. Not recommended for the easily offended or those with seafood allergies.

Hyakko

Jun 14, 2016

There's no one aspect of Hyakko that really sticks out as being unique or specifically well done, but somehow the show itself comes together very nicely and I continue to find it oddly comforting to watch, or even just leave on in the background while I work. There's a certain unusual quality to the pacing and audio which I believe plays a large part in this. The characters, while not really deep by any stretch, are each handled fairly well and are diverse enough to create plenty of opportunities for fun and chaos. While much of the show revolves around the antics of the hyperactive Torako, the show itself... See full review

Kyou no 5 no 2 TV

Mar 28, 2016

This was a cute school-life comedy, but I couldn't help but be put off by the over-the-top abuse that the girls constantly dished out on the boys. It was almost American in its crass disregard for males. In every circumstance the girls were displayed as superior, and very often they would simply beat the mess out of a boy for whatever reason struck their fancy. I get that tsundere (bordering yandere) is a popular trope, but that's accompanied by the clear understanding that the girl is being irrational. This show would have the girls work themselves up, harm the boys, then it would portray them as almost... See full review

Kokoro Connect

Jan 20, 2016

Kokoro Connect isn't really bad, but whether or not you think it's actually good is going to depend primarily on your own emotional maturity. If you're a younger person, struggling to make sense of things - as is the duty of the young - then Kokoro Connect will likely seem to be a very deep and compelling exploration of the human experience. On the other hand, if you've experienced life for a while then you should be prepared for "First World Problems: Anime Edition". The plot revolves around a group of misfit teens who have formed a school club: three harem members, one author avatar, and one... See full review

Tomorrow from there

Jan 9, 2015

I love the art style in this, but it made me scream "MOTTAINAI"! This seems to be the story of a depressed waitress struggling against the existential emptiness of everyday life until she discovers the magic of LSD (off camera, I guess) and is suddenly drawn into a world of imaginary clothing and giant cakes. With such an endearing art style, I want to see this talent applied to full-cour anime instead of a goofy "uplifting" short. As it stands this is something like listening to Mozart play showtunes on a penny whistle.

Kyousougiga (2012)

Aug 4, 2013

I can't really write an in-depth review for this show because, to put it mildly, it's incoherent. Nevertheless, it's charming as hell, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of it. There seems to be a coherent story lurking in the background, but the pieces are scattered and the bits that I got weren't motivation enough to try and sort everything out. If the upcoming series can make this mess sensible then its rating could easily go through the roof. To give a simple summary for those interested in seeing what Kyousogiga is actually about, the story follows (mostly) a young girl named Koto who appears to... See full review

Aiura

Apr 24, 2013

While Aiura is fairly charming and has a catchy OP, it simply fails to deliver anything of substance. The OP and ED consume one minute each and the total length of each episode - including those - is four minutes. The humor often falls flat, the characters are amusing but left woefully undeveloped. I really feel like someone is being betrayed by this anime. It may be that the writers were betrayed by a studio that simply refuses to put in effort. It may be that the producers were betrayed by investors and can't afford to make an actual show. The real problem - and the reason I'm dropping Aiura after... See full review

Straight Title Robot Anime

Apr 5, 2013

This is another one of those oddball gems that goes against the mainstream and makes its own bizzare little place. If you came here expecting a robot battle anime then you're in the wrong place. Honestly, if you came here expecting anything at all then you're going to be disappointed. On the other hand, if you're just looking for a good way to waste time while waiting for upcoming shows between seasons then Straight Title may be exactly what you're looking for. The setting of Straight Title is in a post apocalyptic waste, 7000 years after the extinction of humanity. Giant warrior robots battle for... See full review
