Mikeneko Holmes no Yuurei Joushu

Mar 7, 2022

When I saw this Mikeneko Holmes OVA has only been watched by 30 people on Anime Planet, I was quite surprised. Dedicated fans of Detective Conan manga will have come across the titular novels and TV series thanks to mangaka Gosho Aoyama recommending them at the end of one of the volumes of Detective Conan. Surely, an OVA linked to such high recommendation should have more views, right? After watching this episode, I believe the only people who even know about it are either those hardcore fans of Detective Conan or the people who have watched the live action adaptation or read the original novels. The... See full review

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean

Dec 8, 2021

After much anticipation, Stone Ocean is finally here. It is hard to tell what Netflix plans to do with this weird release schedule but this spoiler-free review is based on the first 12 episodes that are out at the time of writing.  As with all the JoJo parts from the modern anime adaptations, Stone Ocean is very enjoyable. You could watch it independently, but it is highly recommended to watch the entire anime series in release order (Parts 1,2,3,4,5 and 6). That said, it is most likely that longtime fans of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure will love this story. The Stands in this part seem more sensible than... See full review

Jujutsu Kaisen

Apr 1, 2021

Great show. Not as overated as Demon Slayer and definitely not underrated. I strongly disagree with some of the elitist and gatekeeping arguments from people who are criticising the show for being too generic or formulaic or "catering to normies". Even the best shonens like Fullmetal Alchemist were formulaic. Actually, you could argue literally every piece of fiction is formulaic and tries too hard to be like something else. Of course there is a market for easily digestable anime. All of these complaints based on this issue are just proving the show is super efficient with what it allegedly set... See full review

Magical Warfare

Mar 26, 2021

Just finished Magical Warfare. I'm just going to say right away, this is the first anime that has made me regret watching it for the first time in about a year or so. The potential this story had was great and the disappointments it delivered were of colossal levels.
This adaptation feels more like throwing a bone to the loyal light novel or manga fans. It couldn't be more obvious that they did not care about fresh anime audience. There seem to be huge skips between the major plot events, the expositions start and end abruptly and the details are seriously overlooked. You'd be forgiven to believe you're... See full review

Blade of the Immortal (2019)

Aug 26, 2020

Blade of the Immortal is yet another anime that is ranked way lower on Anime Planet than I'd expect. The thing I dislike about user rating based rankings for any sort of database is that it steers me away from the type of stuff I would otherwise absolutely love. It's easy to ignore the "ratings aren't objective" rule if there are too many shows on your watchlist and you don't have enough free time. You automatically start eyeing the numbers in order to decide what you want to watch. Following review may contain spoilers, so please proceed keeping that in mind. This... See full review

Kizuoibito

May 18, 2020

What if trash Japanese pulp fiction and C/B tier movies were mixed together and add some highly effective steroids to this mixture. You get Kizuoibito! Known in English as Wounded Man, this 5 episode anime will surely make you regret the time you took to watch it. Unless you watched it deliberately for the purpose of watching bad anime, like the members of Damn! That Anime is Bad (DTAB), a group of Weebs on the official Anime Planet discord server, did. DTAB is an event where the participants watch a very terrible anime once a week every on a Sunday afternoon/night. Know more about it ... See full review

Gosick

May 13, 2020

I've been watching Gosick for months. To put it clearly, it's such a drag that I haven't been able to finish it despite trying very hard. That should probably give the reader an idea of what I think of this anime. Mild spoilers ahead. It's a boredom fest. I am a serious sucker for mysteries, mind you. So of course when I discovered Gosick on Netflix, I was very eager to explore the show. Yet it falls on its face. The first few episodes were quite okay. The case where Kujo and Victorique visit the town was pretty meh. Avril's impersonation had a good momentum but in the end it fell flat. Then came the... See full review

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045

Apr 25, 2020

Warning: I kind of hate this and there are going to be some out of context spoilers. Another warning: If you're not comfortable with blood and gunshots, skip this. It's far more violent than GitS has been in a way. With that out of the way, let me say that I didn't hate it enough to drop it. As a huge fan of the movie and both SAC seasons, this one has left a bittersweet taste for me. The dogshit CG ruins what I consider to be a good plot. It's offensively full of trash Hollywood tier fight scenes with equally trash fight sound effects that actually hurt the show more than the CG... See full review

Altered Carbon: Resleeved

Apr 5, 2020

Netflix original anime are either hit or miss. I liked the concept of Altered Carbon (live action), but couldn't make time to start watching it. So when I found out Altered Carbon Resleeved is going to be a movie, I decided to give it a try.  Every human can now store their consciousness into a small device called Stack. And these stacks can be inserted into any human body, enabling a person to switch their bodies and effectively being able to live for as many years as they wish. Such a promising premise. It follows the story of one Holly Togram who is on the run from a yakuza gang which she's... See full review

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Apr 2, 2020

After a lot of mulling over whether I should watch FMA Brotherhood or not, I tepidly began watching this show. However, from the moment Scar was introduced in the story, I was hooked. I expected this show to be somewhat overrated and not really being that good. However, I'm glad I was quite wrong. Before reading further, do note that there are some minor but relevant spoilers mentioned in passing. Proceed with that in mind. So about the anime itself. There is a plethora of things that Brotherhood does in the best way possible. The first few episodes of the show are great but still weak compared to the... See full review

Crossing Time

Jan 12, 2020

I found this show on A-P's homepage in the watch online widget/section and decided to give it a shot. With a total runtime of less than 40 minutes, it's surprising the amount of joy it gives.  The story is episodic so if you're looking for something long, you'll be disappointed. However, past that point, Crossing Time is really fun if you're just looking to kill some time. The whole show is pretty "flat" and each story/episode is satisfying despite that.
Some characters were very cliche and some were not so cliche. But they all work quite well in the big picture that is... See full review

Hanamonogatari

Jan 4, 2020

I have started watching the Monogatari series with the most random title: Hanamonogatari. I don't remember what led me to choosing this as my start point for the franchise, but it was something related to Suruga's character design. I haven't even watched anything else in the Monogatari universe yet. And have still no idea what the other titles are about. Thus, this is an odd review from an unconventional viewer. Story and Characters: Blindly entering into the anime, I had no idea what to expect from the story. The first episode was a very weird experience to say the least. Never before... See full review

Vinland Saga

Jan 2, 2020

Been a couple of days since I finished Vinland Saga and here's my attempt to express my thoughts on it. Review may does contain spoilers so please proceed with caution. I kept avoiding Vinland Saga for a few weeks after taking an interest in it based off the hype. Mostly because I was doubtful that Wit Studio would be able to make a show as good as Attack on Titan S3 P2 within the same year and also partly because I simply didn't want to believe Vikings could be portrayed so well in Anime. And I was so happy to be proved wrong on both fronts! I knew I wouldn't hate this anime whatsoever... See full review

Perfect Blue

Dec 7, 2019

Writing a review for Perfect Blue seems unnecessary since there are already enough reviews of it that pretty much cover all off the things I want to say. But, I really liked it so here's my two cents (ha-ha). Also, this review probably contains all the spoilers of the story so if you haven't watched it and don't like spoilers, go watch it, you slacker!  STORY: The story revolves around the recently retired pop idol Mima who is treading the waters in the acting industry. She reluctantly makes the big shift after her agency handler decides that's what's best for her. Little does she know of... See full review

Taro-san no Kisha

Nov 16, 2019

One of my recent solutions to boredom is going on Anime Planet's watch online titles and try to watch something very random. Thus I found Taro-san's train. This a super old animation video from early 1900s so I you know there isn't much there to it. And you'd be right.  This video is a mixture of live action (for the first 3/7th of the film) and classic animation. The story follows a boy happily playing with his toy train set all day long. He dreams about what it's like inside his train set. And in that dream lies a handful of short stories that explore various tropes or personalities you'd find in... See full review

Ano Hi no Kokoro wo Toraete

Nov 11, 2019

As far as anime commercials go, this was quite better than my expectations. They managed to have a definite story in less than 7 minutes quite well. However, the constant guitar sound in the background during the middle feels unnecessay. Thankfully it stops just when you'd want to click off the video. If this were an OVA or even a decaminute longer I'm pretty sure the story and characters could've been explored a lot better

1000say: HANE

Nov 10, 2019

This song could have had a lot better music video. Honestly, it feels like the artist did major injustice to their own song. Especially when it comes to the animation. The story is easy to gauge. With characters, the blame goes back to animation. I don't see how an upbeat song about a girl running around with birds gets a totally black background, a hilariously bad CG character and if it wasn't enough, an alien girl with weird face-body proportions.  However, the song was good enough that I watched the MV throughout anyway.

001

Nov 10, 2019

I have just been replaying this for the past few minutes. And it's impossible to understand what 001 is trying to convey. This is more like a project by a man who was super bored and made this out of force of habit. Like something that you end up doing whenever you're bored.

The Treasures of the Desert

Nov 7, 2019

This anime is about a middle schooler going to a weird desert. There is not really much going on with it. The sole purpose of this OVA seems to be teaching morals and values to 5 year old kids.  Be grateful for what you have and protect your monuments.  If you're any older than 12 just don't bother trying to watch it. The story is painfully plain. The voice acting in the dub is decent. By the end of this 25 minutes episode, the MC starts respecting the value of non-material things like art and gifts. The animation feels like there wasn't any effort put into it. Same with sound design... See full review

Umezu Kazuo no Noroi

Oct 13, 2019

Just watched this absolute gemstone of a horror piece. The Curse Of Kazou Umezu yet another epitome of #dtab (Damn, That Anime Is BAD). It is quite certainly a classic if you go by the era it was made in. And it also has a great potential for good horror elements. However, all of that is wasted because of the overall dogshit execution. There was either no exposition at all, or there was some lazy exposition that helped the writers dodge the task of coming up with clever or at least entertaining explanations.  STORY: The episode is divided into two parts. First half is just too... See full review

Twinkle Nora Rock Me!

Sep 22, 2019

A man's life has two phases. One, before he has watched Twinkle Nora Rock ME! and the other, after he has watched Twinkle Nora Rock Me! Zenonzard The Animation Episode 0

Sep 16, 2019

Zenonzard looks like a promising series based on Episode 0. The premise is set in a futuristic world where, apparently, a card game has surpassed the popularity most popular games of our days. The card game is played in a virtual battle. There isn't much to talk about the story more than this as this is just an itroductory episode. The animation is interesting and fun. Character design manages to look fesh. However, most anime fans will be put off by the CG. The sound design and soundtrack was easily the most attention drawing feature of the episode. The music during one of the battle scenes was... See full review

Nora

Sep 16, 2019

Nora is one of the most awkward anime I may have watched so far. It was impossible for me to take anything about it seriously less than a few minutes in. The story is of an AI computer that goes rogue after a bad scientist tries to use it for his own evil purposes and the titular character, Nora comes in to save the day. The plot, to put it simply, is very straightforward and linear. However, it is so maladministered that it somewhat becomes unpredictable. There is a bit of fanservice scenes here and there. And sometimes it appears right in the middle of a plot-oriented scene. It is really laughable... See full review

Godzilla Movie 2: City on the Edge of Battle

Aug 22, 2019

I started watching this Godzilla adaptation with the expectation of being highly disappointed. With the terrible reputation of Computer Graphics in anime and a franchise with so many previous adaptations so far, I thought I would enjoy it at all. But here I am, almost satisfied, after just finishing the second installment. This movie is definitely better than the first and it does make me look forward to watching the next as soon as I can. The animation is a mixed experience because of the CG. Sometimes simple character movements like walking and hand gestures felt too robotic or unnatural (though this... See full review

Dororo (2019)

Aug 4, 2019

Feudal Japan. An orphan kid teams up with a deaf and blind amputee young adult warrior, and they go on a journey of killing demons while being chased down by the warrior's father and brother. What a wonderful premise! Dororo is by far the best anime re-adaptation I've seen this decade and it's easily the best adaptation of all of Mr. Tezuka's works. STORY Dororo is very dark compared to the manga it's based on but it still manages to be upbeat and playful all throughout its run. It is a well balanced mixture of action, drama comedy along with a very fulfilling character development for every relevant... See full review
