Dororo (2019)

Jul 19, 2019

A fun show to watch, but the story was a bit too slow, with many episodes doing nothing to progress the plot.  I also found the ending rather unsatisfying.  The animation was the real highlight here - action scenes done very well, the backgrounds gorgeous.  The art style feels pretty retro, which is appropriate given that it's an adaptation of a manga from the 60s.

The Rising of the Shield Hero

Jul 19, 2019

An isekai show that rises slightly above most the others.  Over the course of the 25 episodes, I grew to care about our main party quite a bit.  Animation and soundtrack were both solid.

Attack on Titan 3rd Season

Nov 3, 2018

The best that Attack on Titan has been, and this season featured almost no Titans.  Turned the lens toward the political situation inside the walls for the most part, which worked a lot better than I thought it would.  I binged the whole season within a couple of days, I got so into it.   We see a lot more character development across the board, including some interesting payoffs going back to the early episodes of season 1.  Our 104th squad has to contend with the fact they'll be killing humans as well as titans, which they adapt to pretty well.  Finally get some answers to a... Tada Never Falls in Love

Sep 6, 2018

This was a really fun show for me - a classic rom-com with a few big cliches, but still a great watch in my book.  Review contains some spoilers. The overarching story was predictable, so if that is a big turn-off to you, then maybe you wouldn't enjoy the anime too much.  I personally didn't mind - it was still enjoyable to watch relationships progress and characters grow with each other.  The overall feeling was lighthearted, especially for the first 3/4 of the show.  It does get more serious, and even bittersweet at times, but overall, it is an upbeat and high energy show. The... See full review

Hakumei and Mikochi

Aug 8, 2018

A super cozy little SOL anime set in a world where people are a few cm tall and interact with all sorts of sentient animals in a vibrant community.   Episodic - little to no overarching plot, but a lot of the short 1/2 episode long stories were fun.  A few duds here and there, but overall pretty great.   The art style is absolutely gorgeous, especially the backgrounds and the detail in all the characters (not just the main ones).   Music was nothing particularly special, but it fit very well with the feel of the show, helping to add a relaxing vibe and feeling to each... C: The Money of Soul and Possibility Control

Jun 2, 2018

Interesting premise to the show. Basically there is a secret (supernatural) underground financial district where "Entrepreneurs," who seem to be randomly chosen, are given seemingly unlimited funds in exchange for their futures as collateral.  They can (or are forced to) do battle with other Entres using their "Assets," a physical, often humanoid, manifestation of their future.  When one loses a battle (or "Deal" as they're called in the financial district), they can expect unwelcome changes to their future when they return to the real world. Numerous factions vie for... See full review

Naruto

Apr 10, 2013

Story:
Naruto is a ninja in the Hidden Village of the Leaves.  His one dream is to become Hokage, the number one Ninja in the village.  But before that, he has to pass his Ninja exams, and survive the threats coming after Konoha Village one after the other.  Can he and his ninja friends survive? The story of Naruto is a bit tough to review.  The actual story is pretty good.  A lot of complexity and depth go into this shonen series, making it more engaging than most.  That being said, a lot of the time Naruto doesn't focus on the actual story.  The series is... Beet the Vandel Buster Excellion

Apr 10, 2013

Beet The Vandel Buster: Excellion is a sequel to Beet The Vandel Buster.  Here is my review of the original series. Story: The entire series takes place on an island threatened by a Vandel named Vaus.  On this island, The Beet Warriors meet an obnoxious little shit...er, young lad by the name of Leon.  The Beet Warriors must team up with Leon to defeat Vaus and ensure the safety of the island before they can move on in their journey. By itself, the story isn't too bad.  Just some heroes who are saving a village... See full review

Beet the Vandel Buster

Apr 9, 2013

Story:
The story of Beet the Vandel Buster is set in the "Dark Ages," a time when evil monsters, called Vandels threaten the land.  The only ones who can stop the Vandels are brave warriors called Vandel Busters, who fight with their Tengeki, magic-like powers.  Beet has always dreamed of becoming a Vandel Buster, and with a powerful Vandel attacking his hometown, now may be a chance for him to prove himself! Much of Beet the Vandel Buster is a Monster of The Week type of story, though there are a few major villains who need to be taken care of.  The thing that sets the... See full review

Gunbuster 2

Feb 18, 2012

Gunbuster 2, AKA Diebuster is the sequel to the 1988 series, Gunbuster.  To read my review of the original series, click here. Story: Nono is a country girl, and her one dream is to be a Space Pilot, to control a powerful Buster Machine.  Unfortunately, she's a bit of ditz.  Eventually she finds herself in contact with an organization of teenage pilots, called Topless, and she has a chance to realize her dream.  Will she be a successful pilot, or will she flounder pathetically? The story of Diebuster is... See full review

Gunbuster

Feb 18, 2012

Story:
In the near future, humans are beginning to explore the depths of space, even leaving their solar system.  Such an exciting time is marred by the fact that evil "Space Monsters" have their sights set on Earth.  The humans quickly begin training their warriors to do battle, but will they be enough to save the Earth? The story of Gunbuster starts out as basically a school drama, only with giant robots.  From then it moves on to a space-traveling drama.  This part is very interesting, because the humans are traveling at the speed of light, which apparently has a... I recommend you watch the original Afro Samurai before watching Afro Samurai: Resurrection.  Here is my review of the original series. Tales of Phantasia

Feb 17, 2012

Story: Cless Alvein and his party must stop the evil sorcerer, Dhaos, from destroying Yggdrasil, The Tree of Life.  Like many anime adaptations of video games, if you haven't played the original game, you will likely be confused as to what's going on.  Tales of Phantasia (ToP) has a bit of a video game flavor to it.  There aren't levels or experience mentioned, but you can see a basic RPG party among the characters.  Tank, healer, magic-user, etc.  Aside from all that, ToP is a very basic fantasy story, with the heroes trying to stop Dhaos form destroying The Tree of Life...
