Land of the Lustrous

Aug 28, 2020

Land of the Lustrous is one of the most unique experiences I’ve had the pleasure to watch in recent times; it was a really fun and thought provoking series which touches on some very interesting topics, all while delivering a very entertaining and exciting story unlike anything I’d seen before.

I’ll start with the most noticeable aspect which is of course, the animation. The art-style is incredible, it is perhaps the best example of CGI animation I’ve seen in any anime. I will admit I was doubtful at first, the art seemed a bit too different and I wasn’t sure if it was going to be any good, yet after watching the first episode I was blown away and I instantly fell in love with it.

The aesthetic and the colors along with how natural the movements of the characters looked really sold the fact that they are made of gems which served the story incredibly well; it made the whole experience a lot more engaging and exciting to watch with how polished the action sequences were and how beautiful the entire thing looked, making it a true feast for the eyes. The art style is not for everyone though, it can take some getting used to given how different it is; yet when given a chance it can prove to be quite the unique visual experience.

The characters and the story were also top notch, the whole idea of living gems is one of the most interesting and peculiar plot lines I’ve ever encountered, and the way it was delivered was just masterful; all the characters were engaging and relatable, they all had something to admire and their personalities really made you care for them deeply as the story progressed; this combined with the mystery behind the true nature of the gems and the incredible growth the main protagonist goes through in the course of the series made it a truly enthralling tale.

It was also one of the most thought provoking series I’ve seen so far, the whole concept of it and how it was presented raised some very interesting questions which made me wonder about life in a way I was really not expecting; it deals with topics about life, death, mortality and consciousness, all of which can really get your gears running if you pay close enough attention; making it a much deeper experience than it seems at first glance.

Overall, it was an incredible watch that I would recommend everyone check out at least once; even if the art style might look too different than what you’re used to, it is different in the best possible way and the story that accompanies it is nothing short of outstanding; it is without question one of the best series I’ve ever watched.
