When it comes to thorfinn I have to disagree. As his character is realisic, if all you've known since you were like 5, is to get revenge against the man who killed your father right infront of you.
Then why would you suddenly change or develop in any other way. You'd keep chasing that desire for revenge in a fair honourable duel. Because that's all you've known. Considering how the first season ended.
I believe the development on his character, your looking for, will start to happen in season 2. But even in reality why would you change your desire for revenge, when your father was killed right in front of you.
Totally agree about your opinion on canute I think he's development was just speedrun from silent mf to king , but torfinn is exact oposite of conute he didn't get almost any development whatsoever ,but he has huge character development potential, after askeladds death he mighty relise that he was chasing his whole life after revenge for nothing, I just really hope he won't end up as canut and suddenly changes to someone completly else. ( right after someone's, death how ironical that would be)
Too sudden? Death of someone near and dear to you can do that, especially when conflict of religeon is invloved. I thought him and the priests discussions about faith were some of the key defining moments for that strength that we see errupt out of Canute. Faith/a sudden break from faith are powerful things, especially in a time of waring and gods.
Then there is the death of Ragnar, the 'father figure' who babied Canute and treated him like his own child, who selfishly convinced the boy to almost ignore his responibilty as a royal and a powerful Dane no less. Canute relied upon Ragnar to act as a viel from his responsibility and used prayer and gods supposed 'love' to further blind himself to the ever increasing intesity of his situation.
I think with the removal of his barriers, Canute was stripped back to what he truly felt was important. The anime handled his character fantastically.
I do feel though that Thorfinn's role in his character development was weak, they should have played up way more on how they were of similar ages and expressed Canutes jelousy and humilation far more. But of course, Thorfinn was way too obssessed with Askeladd, which too me was the more unrealistic plot.

At least in the manga, Priscilla was finally put out of her misery, right?
