Hitorijime My Hero

Mar 15, 2023

I held off watching this because of the negative reviews I read but I'm sorry, after watching all 12 episodes, I absolutely disagree that it was a terrible anime. I enjoyed it, it was a sweet story albeit taboo but it's the type of thing I've come to expect from BL anime in general (with the exceptions of Given, Sasaki to Miyano and Gravitation.)

It's hard not to sympathise with Masahiro Setegawa, he hasn't had much of a childhood and doesn't really belong anywhere. His mother is a sex worker and though there isn't anything essentially wrong with that line of work, she's horribly neglectful of her son. It's no wonder that he falls in love with Kousuke Oshiba, who he sees as his hero, I completely understand it. In reality, Kousuke probably would have rejected the notion that Masahiro is in love with him, merely pointing out that it's because he gave him a sense of belonging but that wouldn't make this much of a story.

Kousuke and Masahiro, are in love, yes they are teacher and student, there's a massive age gap of 12 years and Masahiro is a minor. None of that would make for a healthy relationship in real life but in this anime, they made it work and another season isn't really necessary. Some stated in this review the anime has no plot but I disagree, it was a bit shaky at the beginning (told a completely different story in first 4 episodes) but it did find its feet eventually and they tied things up well in the end.

To finalise this anime is a taboo love story essentially between a teenager and a mature adult, you will not enjoy it if you can't get past that's what it's about. It's definitely not the best BL I ever watched but it was decent enough to be worthy of a 7.5, I'm onto the manga now.

7.5/10 story
7.6/10 animation
7.5/10 sound
8/10 characters
7.5/10 overall
