Banana Fish

Sep 17, 2021

Right... so... this one... hits hard. Even if a high level of people-dropping-like-flies is expected of a story about street-gangs vs an insane mix of other street gangs / mafia / corrupt government / military / evil scientists / bioweapons setting, and I am no longer the youngest nor the most naive about anime or reality.
Getting over Banana Fish-induced random tearing up and brain haze took a few days of deliberate focused effort. Including, but not limited to, immediately watching Bobby's Girl, ... See full review

Cat Soup

Jan 16, 2012

AMAZING!! Want to know how evolution works? Have you ever thought about what you eat? How about a mindboggling mix of Biblical and other myths from around the world? A bit of time turning, sledging, circus and various creatures maybe? Food and where it goes last of all. Surviving and hallucinating in a desert. How does life start anyway? And how does it end? How does the world end? Loneliness and sibling love? Unattentive parents and TVdinner culture. Diseases and travelling. Someone to sew back your arm in case it happenes to come off? Hitting someone on the head and then feeding yourself with the bump?... See full review

Voices of a Distant Star

Jul 16, 2011

I first saw Voices of a Distant Star in a movie theatre full of people. Most of them were crying by the end. Sadness, emptiness, waiting, love stretched out to the point of breaking. That’s what this short movie is about. Space travel, time lapse and evil aliens come to destroy humans? Not important. Giant mechas, families and growing up? Not important. A message travelling through space for years and years? Important. There is nothing remarkable in the visual on musical side of this anime. Furthermore, the characters are barely outlined, which usually means utter failure. Nevertheless, the blast of... See full review

Cowboy Bebop

Jul 16, 2011

Usually when I receive a recommendation to watch an anime I first look at some pictures from it and make up my mind whether I want to see it or not. The first picture I saw from Cowboy Bebop was of Ed and it gave out the impression of a total nonsense, maybe only suitable to especially unsqueamish children. However, since this anime was said to have an excellent soundtrack I decided to watch it. My first impression got changed quite a bit... The story is of space bounty hunters so fighting and explosions were to be expected. I did not, however, expect such reality from the show. If we had hyperspace travel... See full review

Delightful Moomin Family

Jul 14, 2011

The story of the Moomins originates from the Scandinavia so you can imagine my surprise when chancing upon an episode (otherwise seen oh so long time ago in my childhood) of the Moomin Family on the TV I discovered that the original text was in Japanese. How on Earth did this story of the hippopotamus - like creatures travel so far? I am glad it did, though. The series consists of separate episodes each with their own story and morale. This and the overall good and prettiness stressed in it make the anime perfect for younger children who might still be learning that stealing is bad, mothers are all-loving... See full review

Howl's Moving Castle

Jul 14, 2011

The number of times I have seen the movie? Around 20 I suppose. Actually I have no idea due to it being my „illness movie“ - whenever I have caught a cold or feel otherwise bad I watch Howl’s Moving Castle that carries me away into another world where kindness and love solve all problems. This last may create suspicion in a person since when this technique is employed the result usually is over-the-top cheesy nonsense. That is not the case this time however. The story begins by introducing the world packed with witches, wizards and magic as seen through the eyes of Sophie, a girl working... See full review
