Berserk (2017)

Jul 20, 2017

Positive

*Last time that I reviewed Berserk one of the only positive things that I could mention was Guts being an awesome character. And this continues in the second season, Guts is still the most badass fighter that you’ll ever encounter. But even more than that I found that this 3rd season showcased the duality of Guts’s personality. In one way he still a raging bull who wants to slay Griffith and kills everything in its path. This is shown mostly when Guts comes into contact with the Berserker armor. But on the other hand, I felt that Guts was becoming a warmer person again, especially with Shirke. I think that the formation of this new party fills the hole that Guts had after losing everyone he ever cared for during the Eclipse in S1. Hopefully this ray of happiness isn’t the premise of something horrible since this is still Berserk.

*Something that everyone, including me, was raging about the previous season was the animation. In season 2 the animation was horrible. The 3D CGI was the most atrocious animation that I had ever seen. Now in this season, very surprisingly, the animation was acceptable imo. It still isn’t good but they toned down the use of 3D CGI and went back to more classical animation. This made that it didn’t hurt my eyes anymore to watch Berserk so it was in every way an improvement.

*And a final positive point is that I found the story of this season to be a lot more coherent than the one from season 2. During the second season I was wondering about what was happening all the time. I could not follow that storyline. But the storyline of the 3rd season was a lot more logical.

Negative

*Now besides these improvements, I think that especially for the manga readers, it will still be very cringy to watch this anime adaptation. Mostly of the animation still being quite far under the level what we call acceptable, especially for a manga that has such sick artwork. And on top of that we mustn’t forget that large portions of the manga were completely skipped. As I said in my previous review I didn’t have a lot of problems with this since I’m an anime only. But we are probably missing out on quite some development for Guts and in his quest of revenge against Griffith.

Conclusion

So as a conclusion, it seems that Milipensee has learned from their awful mistakes in Berserk 2016 and made an acceptable adaptation. So overall I’m going to rate this third season of Berserk at 3,5 stars. If the way of telling the story continues like this season, than I would like to see a fourth season. It’s only the question if there’s enough material left in the manga since I heard that it’s going on hiatus again. I even start to wonder if we’re ever going to get the end of Berserk. But either way a fourth season is welcome if Milipensee keeps on improving this adaptation.

7/10 story
5.5/10 animation
8/10 sound
7.5/10 characters
7/10 overall
