Steins;Gate

Nov 21, 2017

This is a review of S;G, the Alternate Universe OVA's and the S;G Movie. WARNING: MASSIVE SPOILERS! (Look for the spoiler tags) Positive *So let’s start the review with a massive positive point that is almost unique to S;G. Finally I got to watch a scientifically accurate time travel anime. This is the first anime where the time travel seemed possible and that is was build upon solid scientific principals. There’s one other anime that I saw attempting this, which was Orange, but every other time travel anime that I have seen resorted to a magic element to make the time travel work. But... Classroom of the Elite

Nov 21, 2017

Before I get to the actual review I want to mention one thing that influenced the way how I watched Classroom. I was expecting something completely different. Based on the trailer I assumed that the story was going to be about these super smart students fighting it out against each other. To beat each other with marks. And eventually it didn’t become that. So that did influence the way I watched this anime but I don’t want my review to be influenced by that. This wasn’t the anime’s fault, it was a misjudgment of my part. For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Link on my... See full review

New Game!!

Nov 21, 2017

Positive *This review is going to be rather short since 2 of my 3 positive points are exactly the same as in my review of the first season. I still liked the bright and colorful animation and art style which emphasized the comical nature of NG. Like the first season I still enjoyed the comedy. If you want to hear more details about why I liked the art style and comedy, I will put a link up here and in the description which will bring you to my review of season 1. For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Link on my profile page. *Something that I missed in the first season was development for... See full review

Convenience Store Boy Friends

Nov 21, 2017

Positive *So let’s start with the positive section but unfortunately this will be quite a short one. I had to search for details that I liked in this anime because overall it didn’t really please me. But there was one thing that did came as a pleasant surprise and that was the plottwist in episode 10. By the time we got to episode 10, it seemed that the stage had been set in this anime. The fact that it was quite bland as well only supported that theory that nothing exciting was going to happen anymore. So when that plottwist came in episode 10, I was caught totally off guard. That was an... See full review

Princess Principal

Oct 26, 2017

Positive *When this I started this anime I was quite skeptical and even after watching the first episode I still didn’t know if this anime would work out. But the more and more I got into PP, the more and more I loved it. Basically this is a spie story like a spie story has to be. Don’t be deceived by the fact that the main protagonists are all cute girls. This is a very dark anime with very dark and mature themes. There were multiple episodes where I was like “Holy shit, did that just really happen?”. But that is what made this anime so good. A spie story is at its best when it is... See full review

Vatican Miracle Examiner

Oct 26, 2017

Positive *The first thing that I want to compliment VKC for is for them being completely unique. This anime was something totally new in the anime world for as far as I know. I can only remember one other anime that used catholicism or Western religion in general and that was Hellsing Ultimate. VKC felt like a completely new take on mystery anime. Now it was kinda special in terms of storytelling and I believe that’s why this anime wasn’t very popular. But it was quite brave from JC Staff to take on such a new concept and imo they did it well. Kakegurui

Oct 26, 2017

Positive *Something that I talked about in my last review of Sakura Quest and that I will address again here is the strong female cast. Besides Suzui, who act more as a narrative, almost all characters are female. And like in SQ, they are all very strong characters but it’s in a very different form. That is because all the female characters in Kakegurui are damn crazy, they are completely insane when it comes to gambling. But that is what made them so unique and it helped build the character of the anime itself. For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Link on my profile page.  And on... See full review

Sakura Quest

Oct 26, 2017

Positive *The first positive point that I want to get out of the way was the animation. As I said in my intro, PA Works usually delivers high quality anime especially when it comes to the animation. And that was no less true here in SQ. PA Works’s anime’s are sure to have high quality, smooth and colorful animation. They are one of my favorite animation studios when it comes to pure animation and in SQ they again delivered what I expect from them. For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Positive *Anime’s don’t always live up to my expectations and unfortunately SR was one of those. Now despite everything that I’m going to say in this review and everything that I’m going to complain about in a minute, I still believe that, at its core, SR is a very good anime. If I take away all the things that bothered me, than I find an anime with a very well written story. SR is an anime with a lot of dept, this is a complex anime with a story that has 5 times more dept than your standard seasonal anime. For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Fastest Finger First

Oct 26, 2017

Positive *If you saw my Summer 2017 preview that I did 3 months ago, you remember that I described the, than upcoming, Summer season as a season of new concepts. There were a lot of anime’s coming out with concepts that I hadn’t seen before. And NMSB was one of those. I personally had not seen an anime before where quizzing was the main theme. Anime’s about card games that I had seen before but pure quizzing was something new. So, you will hear this again in some upcoming reviews, I will always give extra credit to anime’s who go outside the “comfort zone”, who go... See full review

Love and Lies

JV's Anime of the Season: Summer 2017 Positive *The first thing that I liked in KtU was the comedy-drama balance which I found to be very well done. In this anime very serious and dramatic moments were alternated with light comical ones. And that is what a series like this needs, you can’t make it all dark and serious all the time. It’s the alternation between serious and silly that makes the drama shine. Also the comedy was pretty good in KtU and it made that when the drama kicked in, it kicked in hard. Restaurant to Another World

Oct 26, 2017

Positive *The first positive thing that I want to point out is that I really liked the artwork in this anime. The animation itself was decent, not anything too spectacular but the artwork was really nice. Because this anime focusses on food, it was vital that they made the food look good and they succeeded. The food didn’t look spectacular like in Shokugeki no Souma but it could definitely make you hungry. And besides the food also the overall artwork and colors were used very well. The restaurant emitted a calm atmosphere where food could be enjoyed. For a video review, check out my Youtube... See full review

Ah! My Goddess TV

Oct 26, 2017

This review contains everything from the modern franchise: the first and second season, the Fighting Wings OVA’s and the newest, 2011 OVA’s. Positive *The first thing that definitely made me like this anime more was the length of it. AMG is one of only a handful of anime’s that I’ve watched who went over 50 episodes. And if you have so many episodes to watch and invest so much time in it, you really develop a bond with the anime. I still remember the 5 or 6 other anime’s that were this long because I connected with story and the characters after watching them for a month or... See full review

Mekakucity Actors

Aug 29, 2017

Note my overall score is arbitrary, see conclusion Positive *So through all the confusion that this anime inflicted on me, there was one thing that jumped out to me in terms of positive. And that was how several storylines in this anime were connected in ways that I could not predict. For instance, the first two episodes and the 2 episode after that are completely different stories and I could not see how they were connected. To me it seemed that they weren’t at all. But than in the 5th or 6th episode, suddenly these 2 storylines came together and I did not see that coming. And the anime did that... See full review

Say "I love you."

Aug 29, 2017

Positive *My first positive point is the main topic of this anime being coming of age. If you’re familiar with my reviews than you will have definitely noticed my love for coming of age anime’s. I just love seeing characters going through a difficult period in their lives because it delivers so much characterization and usually is the foundation for some drama. And SIny. is a pure coming of age anime. This whole anime is about Mei learning to accepts these feelings she has for Yamato and that there are people out there who can really be your friends. And in this case, I felt a real bond because... See full review

Engaged to the Unidentified

Aug 29, 2017

Positive *When I thought back on EttU, I remembered that, at the time, this anime had a quite unique premise. I had not seen an anime before where the main male and the main female were forced upon each other, and I have seen a fair share of romance anime’s. Therefor, to me, the romance in this anime was strange but strange in a good way. Because of EttU not following the standard romance pattern where 1 of the 2 main characters immediately falls in love with the other, the development of the romance was different.  At the start of this anime I don’t know if there even was romance or... JV's Anime of the Season: Spring 2017 WARNING SPOILERS! Look out for the spoiler tags. Positive *The first positive thing that want to address is the animation. The animation in TgK wasn’t the super sharp kind that I usually adore but it fitted the theme and the atmosphere of the anime. TgK is a very cute romance anime and the soft nature of the animation and the use of soft colors emphasized the tone that this anime wanted to bring, studio Feel did that very well. In a lot of ways the animation in TgK reminded me of the one used in Usagi Drop where also the soft animation and colors... See full review

Aug 8, 2017

WARNING SPOILERS! Look out for the spoiler tags Positive *Since FN was a music themed anime, the obvious thing to start this review with is the music. If it wasn’t clear from previous reviews already: I love music based anime’s, especially if they contain such great music as here in FN. The type of rock music that is used in this anime was completely to my liking and it also fitted the character of Nino and the struggles that she feels since Momo keeps on rejecting every move of her to get closer. This “rage” that builds up inside of her and than sometimes explodes out like we... See full review

Yowamushi Pedal: New Generation

Aug 8, 2017

Positive *My first positive point is something that YP already did very good in its first part and continued to do here in the second part. And that is exploring the side characters and giving them backstories and their time in the spotlights. In YP:NG we not only get to know new characters like Kaburagi and Koga but also some older characters get their time to shine. Both Teshima and Sugimoto have their arcs where we explore their characters. And there are still many more new characters who have been introduced and still need backstory. That will be something for the 4th season. For a video review, check... See full review

Clockwork Planet

Jul 20, 2017

Positive *Can I even find anything that I liked in this anime? …….. Anchor was quite cute. ……… Moving on. Negative *Because my God that was literally the only spark of light that I saw in this thing that calls itself an anime. But CP was bad on so many different levels. First of all, I know that in fantasy/sci-fi anime you’re basically free to do whatever the hell you want. But the whole concept of CP was so triggering that I couldn’t ignore it. So if I got this right than the actual earth was dying and so this “scientist” by the name of Y build... See full review

Jul 20, 2017

Positive *I want to start this review with my appreciation for the music in this anime. Both the opening song “Hitorigoto” and the ending song “Adrenaline” were so much fun. They were so uplifting and fitted the light atmosphere of this anime. I am truly addicted to both of them and I feel that both of them have a good chance to be nominated for Best Opening and Best Ending song at the end of the year. Hinako Note

Jul 20, 2017

*This is going to be a quick review since HN is such a simple moe comedy anime. I simply don’t have a lot of things that really stood out. If I have to give something that I liked in this anime than it would be the use of chibi animation in certain scenes. Anime’s have to be really careful with chibi animation since it can be overdone very easily. But HN used chibi animation at the correct times and it elevated the silliness of those scenes. Berserk (2017)

Jul 20, 2017

Positive *Last time that I reviewed Berserk one of the only positive things that I could mention was Guts being an awesome character. And this continues in the second season, Guts is still the most badass fighter that you’ll ever encounter. But even more than that I found that this 3rd season showcased the duality of Guts’s personality. In one way he still a raging bull who wants to slay Griffith and kills everything in its path. This is shown mostly when Guts comes into contact with the Berserker armor. But on the other hand, I felt that Guts was becoming a warmer person again, especially with... See full review

Jun 29, 2017

Positive *Before I started writing this review I went back to my original review of the first season to see what I thought of it back then. And something that I already liked then and now again was the music. Also in this second season I liked the opening song called Stella Breeze. It’s one of those opening songs where I can’t pinpoint why I like it. It’s just: I liked it and that’s it. For a video review, check out my Youtube channel. Attack on Titan

Jun 29, 2017

This is a review of S1, S2 and the OVA's. Positive *So let’s start with the, I must admit, many positive points of AoT. First is the setting. I just mentioned this in last week’s review but I like anime’s that have a medieval setting, it delivers other opportunities for the story and the characters. And expanding on this is the overall set-up of AoT. The way how this anime and then also the manga are set up is very detailed. It seems the creator thought about everything from the titans to the 3D maneuver equipment and the squad formation. You see that everything has been worked out and... See full review

Snow White with the Red Hair

Jun 29, 2017

This is a review of both seasons. Positive *My first positive point of SWwtRH is the medieval setting of this anime. It’s always refreshing to see something else than the standard high school setting that we see in 90% of the romance anime’s. Not that I have anything against those but once in a while it’s nice to see something else. Also I find the middle ages an interesting period to use in anime, it delivers other opportunities that you can’t use in high school romances. So a medical setting is always an extra plus like in other anime’s like Re:Zero, Hai to Gensou no... See full review

A Silent Voice

May 29, 2017

Positive *What made this movie so popular and appreciated and also made the biggest impression on me was the message that this movie brings. I found that each of the 2 main characters brought one important message into this story. For Shouko, it was isolation. We, as hearing people, can’t start to imagine what it is to be deaf or have bad hearing. In the first part of the movie, the elementary school period, we get a good look into how isolated Shouko must have felt. Even if we take out the bullying, it must be so frustrating and mind-wrecking to feel so left out out of everything. Even if you can... See full review

Re:ZERO: Starting Life in Another World

May 23, 2017

WARNING SPOILERS AHEAD (This was my 100 sub special review, so it's quite extensive ;-) ) Positive *So let’s get started. Let’s first do the “side” positive points before diving into what made this anime really special. My first positive point was the music and here for once I don’t mean the OST. The OST, in my opinion, was meh. I was listening to it when I was writing this review and honestly I have heard better OST except maybe the end ost of episode 15.  But there were a few songs that were really beautiful. Let’s start with my favorite song of the entire... See full review

Trickster

May 23, 2017

*If were to summarize this anime in just a few words than it would be that its story was chosen poorly. They choose the wrong story to focus upon here in Trickster. You know what they should have done? They should have focussed on Kobayashi’s story and his past, that was also the logical thing to do. Those few episodes in the second part where we do focus on Kobayashi were the most interesting of the anime. There I finally got to see what I was expecting to see here. At the same time I felt the focus and the tone of the anime getting more serious since before these episodes Trickster also used quite... See full review

Urara Meirochou

May 23, 2017

*Overall this is a very chill anime and everything in the anime enhances this relaxed feeling from the animation and the characters to the overall storyline. Seeing the girls progress as fortune tellers with all the misunderstandings and hilarious skits made UM a fun anime to watch. And it’s especially fun to watch if you’re a fan of moe anime’s. Every character in UR is female each being more cute and moe than the previous. *But unfortunately the moe characters couldn't fill the hole that I fell when it came to the story.
