The fascination with "real" relatable familial structures, the rapid ubiquitous decline of the traditional family dynamic, as well as shifting familial roles may not have inspired this story but it represents these trends. Daikichi is a bachelor who has little else but work in his life and Rin is an orphan. When they come together they have to adjust to their new situation. One that neither was prepared for, one neither would have wished for, and one that challenges what they thought about how they should behave.

Daikichi does not know how to be a father any more than Rin knows how to be an aunt but they give it a shot. What they discover just may be that neither needs to be what others consider them. Just because Daikichi’s mother and sister (and other family members) have an opinion about how he should treat Rin but that does not mean he has to listen to them. Likewise Rin is told that she is something but that does not make her that thing. Together they learn what works for them. They become a family of a different color. No less real than any other type and certainly not one that lacks heart.
