Destiny Child

It might not be God that’s always watching but someone certainly is.

The entire anime is a game focused on demons competing to become the Devil King.

A jumpy stuttering part-time worker falls prey to otherworldly creatures [namely Frej] bent on using her to harm the guy she may be crushing on and who just so happens to be the weakest otherworldly creature pretending to be human.

Or is he?

Omasu came to the mortal realm for his own reasons, got a part-time job, and unintentionally put his co-worker, Tsukasa, in danger. In order to protect her he must accept his participation in the contest.

The potentially unromantic relationship between the guy and girl is refreshing for an anime.

The potential for a romantic relationship between Omasu and Frej turning the traditional “white knight” into “white goddess” is a delicious twist.

The contrast between Omasu and Frej in how they view Childs is a good set-up for future conflicts.

Trading souls for power is an ancient concept being executed in a somewhat novel way in this anime. Humans give their soul to a demon so both can become powerful. Humans fight for the demon and the demon uses them to take on other contestants with the aim of becoming the Devil King.

The ending theme sets up a prospective bittersweet goodbye.

“Before you know it the things you love disappear between the cracks”
