Neo Yokio

Feb 2, 2019

DISCLAIMER: Reviewing English Dubbed Version.

“Neo Yokio is the greatest city in the world” - these words are the first greeting provided by the narrator Jude Law (yeah that’s right Mr. Law is now a part of anime ^^). He also voices Charles, a mechanized butler who looks after and attends to the needs of the main character, Kaz.

Jaden Smith offers his voice to Kaz Kaan and does a pretty good job, his pubescent voice seems to crack on command and matches well with the purple eyed, fuchsia haired, midnight blue tux wearing, love-sick rich boy.

When it comes to the supporting cast more admiration is called for:

Susan Sarandon has lent her oooh so talented and recognizable voice to more than one character → Great Aunt Agatha & Helena’s mother. Nothing she ever says is not appreciated or worth less than a standing ovation. She can play the privileged well-off lady and the concerned mother with precision and even provide a bit of a distinction between the two - though her voice is still apparent as both characters.

Jason Schwartzman can “uck” like no-ones buisness, as Arcangelo Corelli is a stuck up blonde rich boy who loves to look down on everyone, claps for his performance are genuine.

Katy Mixon can pull of a southern accent and sing like she’s a popstar, since her character Sailor Pellegrino is just that - this was another excellent choice.

Frank Vincent’s lovable as Uncle Albert as he praises his nephew, Kaz, and puts down his son Jeffrey. Always love to hear him say “prick” - honey for the ears.

The story follows Kaz the most eligible bachelor in Neo Yokio who really doesn’t care about his position and has his sights set on one girl, Cathy. Cathy really doesn’t seem to care about him though - basic one sided love concept there. His rival, Arcangelo, cares about being second fiddle to Kaz - as Neo Yokio’s second most eligible bachelor - and always seems to show up when Kaz is feeling down - typically because of Cathy and does his best(worst) to make Kaz feel worse. Kaz’s Great Aunt thinks he doesn’t care enough about being a West Side high society heir and puts a lot of effort into controlling his every action. Charles just does what he’s told, for the most part, even when it cause him and his pilot trouble.

Contrary to what some people would like to believe candy does not melt a woman's heart and this anime will show you just how easily a girl can turn down an oversized toblerone and make you smile the entire time, her deadpan reaction to being offered the sweet is just delicious.

Randomish Ranma ½ shenanigans await those who watch this. Need I say more?

There’s some Boondocks (2005) feel in this anime, from the character design to the street gang slang.Overall this anime feels more American than some animes that are meant to be American or European.

For anyone who hasn’t watched Boondocks [as it’s not classified as an anime for AP] it’s an American animated TV series where money matters, swearing, and jokes are racy/raunchy/religious/pop-cultural/homophobic and delivered like jabs in some places and a basic part of conversation in others -- just like Neo Yokio.

Oh yeah and this anime has mystical, magical, mind powers and demons who possess objects. Kaz exercises them as directed by his Great Aunt Agatha - but that’s a small part of this gem. Even if the advertisements tell you otherwise. Fashion is the main focus.
