Monster

Story:  The story for "Monster" is nothing short of fantastic.  There is something to be said about the fact that I marathoned through this anime and it's 74 episodes.  The story sets up the incredibly talented Dr. Tenma.  He makes the decision to perform surgery on a young boy with a bullet wound to the head and save the boys life.  The surgery is a success and the boy dissappears from the hospital.  The boy reappears as a young man and reveals to Tenma that he has become a killer.  Feeling responsible for the boys life, Tenma also feels that it is his responsibility to kill him.  This anime was full of intrigue and action.  There were scenes so intense I was left breathless.  Furthermore, there is a lot to be said about how an anime ends (no spoilers I promiss).  This had one of the best anime endings I have ever seen.  The last ten episodes leading up to the finale were so shocking my roommate asked if I was ok because my reactions were so big.

Animation:  The animation was not remarkable.  The settings were very nice but the characters were a bit stiff (even for an anime).  However, I would not say that the animation was bad enough that anyone should question wether they should watch it.

Sound:  I loved the opening and closing themes.  They were dark and serious with a little bizarre quality.  The background music made the scenes even more interesting and I actually took note of it.  I also think there is something to be said about an anime that uses silence.  The creators for Monster knew when no music was necessary, and trusted that the characters actions and voices would speak for themselves.  Wise move!

Characters:  I cannot rave about these characters enough.  All of them were intriguing to watch and left me wanting to see more of all of them.  Tenma could have come off as boring and preachy (as some moraly driven protagonists turn out to be) but Tenma was a caring human being who, while questioning his beliefs in his practice and in the world, always wanted to help others.  Johan is one of the best villains I have ever seen.  He is a true evil genius who knows how to play with emotions.  Johan knows exactly what it takes to make a person truely crack.  He also knows that, in some cases, he doesn't have to do very much to drive people truely mad.  Yet, I also liked that he was aware of his own evil and did not revel in it.  Nina was a strong and independant female character.  It was obvious she was torn in her struggle to rid an evil from the world without losing her humanity.

"Monster" was a pure joy to watch!
