Wonder Egg Priority

Mar 15, 2022

Wonder Egg Priority caught me off guard but quickly established itself as an equally striking and intriguing anime. When a girl breaks out of an egg that Ai Ohto receives from a gachapon machine, her life begins to teeter on the edge of reality. In this dream-like alternate reality, Ai must help the girls overcome their life ending trauma. A subversion to the classic magical girls genre, Wonder Egg Priority looks into the struggles young girls face. The most powerful part of this anime was its storytelling. Each and every girl that the main cast meet are dynamic and well developed characters, with equally... See full review

Komi Can't Communicate

Jan 4, 2022

After hearing countless recommendations to read the manga, I was so excited when the anime was announced! And as I write this review, I can't help but smile even though it's over (for now). After meeting the most popular and beautiful girl in school Komi Shouko, Tadano Hitohito learns that she can't talk to people due to her social anxiety. And so, the anime follows Tadano and Komi as they work towards their goal of Komi having 100 friends. Featuring a unique and fun cast of characters, it's a quick, easy, and enjoyable watch! Aside from the cast of hilarious side characters, the most... See full review

Banished from the Hero's Party, I Decided to Live a Quiet Life in the Countryside

Dec 31, 2021

I decided to pick up this up as my chill anime for the season. But unfortunately, Banished from the Hero's Party ended up being more than I bargained for. Following Red- real name Gideon- after he is banished from his sister's adventuring party, he decides to settle down in the small town of Zoltan. When Rit- princess of Duchy Loggervia- arrives in town, she quickly nestles herself into Red's life, helping establish and run his apothecary. As the Hero's party's path starts to intertwine with his, things don't quite add up with the events leading to his banishment. Will Red and Rit be able to continue their... See full review

K-On!!

Sep 29, 2021

No spoilers- K-on follows the lives of five high school girls from their enrollment into highschool to their graduation. Coming together through the light music club, the girls become inseparable from their music as well as one another.  What made this anime stand out to me is how intimate the viewers were with the club and its members. We were with them through thick and thin, while they were nervous, excited, and upset. It was all the episodes that deviated from the original plot, such as them shopping or on their school trip, that helped create a total picture of their high school lives. The path... Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Sep 29, 2021

No spoilers- Mushoku Tensei is one of the funniest animes I've seen in a while. After being hit by a truck, our protagonist is reincarnated into another world, but starts his journey off as an infant. Primed with his knowledge and memories from his previous life, Rudy is ready to take on the world and whatever it brings him!  This anime stands out to me as it completely flipped standard isekei tropes by having the protagonist start his journey off as a baby; truly starting from square one. It was hilarious to be privy to his grown adult thoughts and his commentary really made a lot... See full review

High-Rise Invasion

Sep 7, 2021

Very minor spoilers- High-Rise invasion is an action packed play-or-die anime with some interesting twists. Transported to an alternate world full of skyscrapers, Honjo  Yuri is unable to descend the towers and must fight to survive versus unknown masked killers. Seperated from her brother, she is bent on being reunited with him and breaking out of the world together. Can she make it to her brother before succumbing to despair? I would have loved this anime a lot more if the main character wasn’t so all over the place. There is a fine line between writing a character who is clearly unhinged... See full review

Players fight to the death for ingame points, territory, and glory, using special powers given to them upon opening the app. When Sudo Kaname receives an invite to play the game he unknowingly signs his life away! Will he be able to survive long enough to discover the secrets of Darwin’s Game? Or will he become just another street art installation in Shibuya? This play or die anime really threw you right into it, using the lack of information as fuel to the burning fire. It was well paced... See full review

Haikyuu!! Second Season

Sep 3, 2021

No spoilers- I enjoyed this second season just as much as the first, but for different reasons. Season two stood out for its character development whereas the first shone with Kageyama and Hinanta at its core. I loved how no matter what, each individual team member was highlighted throughout their quest for personal greatness; each of them worked so hard to feel like they had something to contribute. So when they all came together to play in the spring tournament, the team felt so different, but in the best way. The team was full to the brim of talent, ready to take on whatever challenges awaited them... See full review

The Promised Neverland 2nd Season

Apr 29, 2021

No spoilers- This review is solely informed by the content found in the anime. This season follows the children of Grace Field House after their escape. They're alone and afraid in a new world rife with unfamiliar flora and fauna, under the constant threat of the demons pursuing them. Primed with their wits and the knowledge Minerva-san snuck to them, they set off into the world, seeking to save the other children and hopefully abolish the farm system altogether.  Although this season did have some interesting and suspenseful episodes, this anime completely missed the mark; a huge let down... Horimiya

Apr 29, 2021

No spoilers- I decided to watch this anime based on numerous recommendations from friends but I was skeptical: there were so many characters advertised in the main graphic. Some animes struggle to spend any time developing their side characters but Horimiya blew me away with its diverse cast of characters, all of which underwent significant personal growth during the series. The anime primarily follows Hori and Miyamura from their first meeting to their high school graduation, detailing their days spent at school among friends. Overall, Horimiya was a very fun and enjoyable slice of life and... See full review

Apr 29, 2021

With help from Shirou, a wolf beastman who works for the Mayor of the city, the two make friends, enemies, and unlikely allies on their quest for answers. Similar to other Studio Trigger works, this anime dealt with a large issue, but broke it up into a digestible and enjoyable way. Although the main theme of this show was eerily reminiscent of some of our own problems we face in current times, it was done in such a way that it still felt external to real... See full review

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! Heart Throb

Mar 12, 2021

No spoilers- In Chunibyo and Other Delusions- Heart Throb-, the plot continues to follow the members of the Far East Magical Napping Society Summer Thereof. The main drivers of this season's plot however are the developing romance between Rika and Uta, and the quest to awaken the Dark Flame Dragon. The second season stands out for its ability to balance the overarching chunibyo vibe with the romance. Even though the focus is on Rika and Uta, each member of the club has their own arc, each of which deepened their relationships with one another. Shun Hashimoto- a novelist living at a boarding house- falls for Mio Chibana, a high school who leaves the island to finish school on the mainland. Their story begins with Mio's return, their love slowly blossoming with him taking residence in the boarding house with Shun. Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!

Feb 21, 2021

No spoilers- This anime has been on my to watch list for a while, and honestly, I was surprised by how much I liked it! Love, Chunibyo, and other Delusions follows Yuta Togashi as he begins his high school years, determined to leave his Chunibyo persona in the past. However, upon meeting Rikka Takanashi, a Chunibyo who comes to learn about his past, his goal to start a new life at school is quickly foiled. Chuu-2 excels at character growth while still maintaining its quirky vibe. Each character is unique and well realized, both in their physical design and personalities. Classroom of the Elite

Jan 19, 2021

No spoilers- I decided to watch this anime on the fly after hearing some good reviews about it online. However, I was left extremely disappointed upon finishing it. The plot for the anime follows the students in the D-class at a highschool that boasts a 100% acceptance rate into university or employment post graduation.  Each month they are allotted points which they can use at the various amenities located on campus, with the allocation of points based on their academic performance.  My disappointment with this anime stems from the promise that "points can buy... Adachi and Shimamura

Jan 19, 2021

Very minor spoilers- This anime is a sugary sweet slice of life series that follows two girls- Adachi and Shimamura- as they become friends. The premise is simple, well executed, and features beautiful animation. I really thought it was going to be special, but it fell flat. My largest issue with this anime stems from how they treated Adachi's feelings towards Shimamura. Adachi clearly had strong feelings for her, but through a number of miscommunications, Shimamura never comes to realize that. But by doing so, it unfortunately baited the viewers into thinking it was going to feature their... See full review

22/7

Dec 20, 2020

No spoilers- The premise of this anime really drew me in; it follows an idol group formed without the girls auditioning, with some not even interested in being idols at all! The group was formed and all of their decisions made by a wall that printed them out onto metal cards. Yet despite the interesting premise, the show fell flat for me. Unlike other idol animes I have seen, these girls did not have to climb for their success. With the stages and performances the machine demanded, their success was ensured with a strong performance. With the idols themselves, each girl was clearly defined... See full review

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War?

Dec 20, 2020

No spoilers- Picking up where the first season left off, Kaguya and Miyuki are still at war, fighting a battle they both think they will win. They take more steps in their developing romance/relationship this season, and have some really cute moments! The overall plot and format of this show follows that of the first season, with the episodes containing "battles" of which a winner or loser is declared to end the segment. A highlight of this series as a whole is its ability to balance time between the main cast of four, rather than focusing on Kaguya and Miyuki alone. Each character... See full review

Fire Force 2nd Season

Dec 20, 2020

No spoilers- Fire force season two was just as visually stunning, impactful, and creative as the first. David Productions did an amazing job creating and maintaining the anime's unique style, and further built upon its elements in this season. However this season fell flat for arguably its plot alone. The plot of the first season was defined and solved (for the most part) by the end of the season. The flow was smooth, the suspense built up over the entirety of the anime, giving the final fight the importance and gravity it needed. Yet for this season, the plot was extremely segmented, with the ending... See full review

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders - Battle in Egypt

Dec 9, 2020

Although the series is split into two parts this review will be for the series as a whole. Stardust Crusaders was the part that really got me into JoJo. I really enjoyed the first two parts, but it was part 3 that really hooked me! The show made me laugh and cry and really solidified my early love for the series. This part stated the direction of the plot right out the gate and even though it took them a whole season to get to Egypt, the journey there didn't loose any steam. Put simply, Stardust Crusaders is about an old guy and his grandson going on an adventure to beat up an old bully, along they way... See full review

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (2012)

Dec 9, 2020

I'll be honest. I don't understand why people skip part 1 and 2 of JoJo. The anime started off strong establishing its unique style and quirks. Although this part is not the most memorable for me, doesn't mean it wasn't good in its own way. I liked how the series started off with Johnathan and Dio, establishing their bond, and setting up the rivalry between him and the Jostars for the parts to come. However as the part was so short, it lacked meaningful character development, and unfortunately led to a very forgettable supporting jobro cast, minus Zappelli and Speedwagon. The fight... The Night is Short, Walk On Girl

Dec 9, 2020

No spoilers- I enjoyed this movie, it was fun and visually exciting and impactful. The movie follows a character only known as "the girl with the black hair" as she drinks and explores the city over the course of one evening. She drinks a lot, makes friends, and goes wherever her heart takes her, enjoying everything and everyone she runs into. The movie works in an episodic fashion, with all the details of the various stories the girl went through coming together in the final part of the film. The strongest aspect of this film was its visuals. Each scene's content, no matter how mundane, was... See full review

The Case of Hana & Alice

Dec 4, 2020

No spoilers- This movie was okay, enjoyable enough to watch but far from anything special. The movie follows Hana and Arisugawa (Alice) as they investigate a murder that had supposidly occured at their school, and growing closer as friends in the process. But unfortunately, it was the simplistic plot that rendered this movie just barely enjoyable. I didn't mind the rotoscope animation but for some people that may further diminish the quality of the film. If you played this in the background while you did something else you would probably enjoy it as much as I did, minimally.

Say "I love you."

Dec 4, 2020

No spoilers- This anime was highly recommended for its romance, but I believe did not live up to its hype. The story follows Mei Tachibana and Yamato Kurosawa as they grow closer, gaining more friends along the way. The supporting cast were well fleshed out, however suffered by having the majority of their backstories relegated to only one episode. As for the main two, I loved Yamato and how forward he was with his feelings, yet at the same time respecting (after their first kiss) Mei's boundaries. He provided a refreshing take on the usually very cookie cutter reactions I find characters have in... See full review

Penguin Highway

Dec 4, 2020

No spoilers- This movie felt like a true fantasy. Each element of the story, characters, score, and visuals reflected the piece's whimsical outlook. The story felt like it was created, shaped, and told by the children starring in it, allowing the plot creative freedom to play with their fantasies. This is best demonstrated in the sequence where the kids come every day during their summer holidays to make observations about the bubble. It was such a simple concept, yet it was realized perfectly. It captured the kid's thoughts and feelings about their work, each other, and their discovery... See full review

Yuru Yuri

Dec 4, 2020

No spoilers- I enjoy slice of life however Yuru Yuri felt off to me. My main critique of the anime was not with the plot- it was a standard slice of life school girl anime- but with the character Chitose. She is used for comedic relief, known for having Yuri fantasies about her friends, and subsequently suffering nosebleeds because of them. But after the first 5, I was tired of her. Additionally, some episodes were so saturated with her nose bleeds that they lost all value. If you're looking for a similar concept but with a more refined cast of characters and a comedic twist, try Asobe Asobase or Daily... See full review

Perfect Blue

Dec 1, 2020

Perfect blue was gross, unsettling, intimate, and disorienting, depicting a profoundly real feeling story. Mima felt like a real person, with all parts of her daily life depicted on screen, both the mundane and the thrilling. Mima allowed us into her world and by the end of the film, the lines separating reality from Mima's own perceptions were extremely blurred. Through her work as an idol and an actress, she is constantly changing how she presents herself in order to best play her roles. The God of High School

Nov 29, 2020

No spoilers- There was a lot of hype surrounding this Webtoon adaptation, and rightfully so. But having not previously read the source material, The God of Highschool fell extremely flat. Mappa did an outstanding job animating the fighting sequences, with some of the most fluid and dynamic battles I've seen in other animes. But I felt that the overall plot for this show was very poorly executed. As I previously mentioned, I have not read the Webtoon, so I don't know if the plot is different there. But at only 13 episodes, I spent more time confused than enjoying the anime. There are a lot of... See full review
