High-Rise Invasion

Sep 7, 2021

Very minor spoilers- High-Rise invasion is an action packed play-or-die anime with some interesting twists. Transported to an alternate world full of skyscrapers, Honjo  Yuri is unable to descend the towers and must fight to survive versus unknown masked killers. Seperated from her brother, she is bent on being reunited with him and breaking out of the world together. Can she make it to her brother before succumbing to despair?

I would have loved this anime a lot more if the main character wasn’t so all over the place. There is a fine line between writing a character who is clearly unhinged versus someone who can’t keep their thoughts straight. But with Yuri, they completely missed the mark. But her supporting cast were likeable so she wasn’t the catalyst for this rating.

I think the anime took a turn from great to just okay when the “person(s) closer to God” became a thing. At first I was really intrigued as to what this meant and how the players could reach this state, but was very disappointed when it was revealed. The power up seemed like a quick way for the players to gain a bunch of power without having them do much at all; nothing sacrificed but a lot gained. Additionally, when they became “closer to God” their powers were locked away, to be gained when the person... realized they could do it? I thought the system was broken and tried to build itself up to be this big thing that it wasn’t.

Overall this anime was okay, but nothing special. I really wish that they put more time into the plot throughout the series rather than just the first few episodes; they would have been able to keep their audience interested if they did.
