Wonder Egg Priority

Mar 15, 2022

Wonder Egg Priority caught me off guard but quickly established itself as an equally striking and intriguing anime. When a girl breaks out of an egg that Ai Ohto receives from a gachapon machine, her life begins to teeter on the edge of reality. In this dream-like alternate reality, Ai must help the girls overcome their life ending trauma. A subversion to the classic magical girls genre, Wonder Egg Priority looks into the struggles young girls face.

The most powerful part of this anime was its storytelling. Each and every girl that the main cast meet are dynamic and well developed characters, with equally fleshed out back stories. The anime’s portrayal of their trauma was extremely impactful, with all of their situations given equal amount of care. Additionally, the inclusion of both gay and trans characters was a refreshing and welcome addition to the anime. Although the majority of the characters came and went, they each had their own time to shine.

As for the ending of this anime, it was lackluster but not completely terrible. It was clear to me that the company either ran out of time/money or made a too ambitious project that they just couldn’t deliver upon. That being said however, the journey that this story takes you is worth the watch. Honestly, despite its rushed and cut off ending, I would still recommend this anime. Wonder Egg Priority is gripping and heart wrenching, yet grounded in contemporary reality. Coupled with its bright animation style, it’s a force to be reckoned with. I do sincerely hope they continue telling the girls’ stories in a future season(s) or in a movie.
