Code Geass - Watching Guide

This is a very intelligent series which uses strategy and tactics as its main weapons to drive the story. With themes of revolution, freedom, what is just, believing in your own skills and taking responsibility for your actions.

To call this a Mecha Anime is not quite accurate, as they are presented just as tools of war. Certainly, what attracts people to this anime are the plot twists, well-placed cliffhangers, moral predicaments and battles that constantly test your wits. To call it a masterpiece is not an exaggeration as time has kept it popular and the favorite of many people for a long time now.

"Of every show I've watched, Code Geass seemed to capture me into its environment more than any other. It's excellent use of music, great animation and character designs, and attention to detail made the whole experience feel very real. Though some characters are quite annoying, I think it is definitely worth watching for anyone who enjoys an action-packed, psychological journey." -DjGopher

The dub is great.

ABOUT THE PICTURE DRAMAS:

You can skip anything labeled Picture Drama, these are very low-quality stories told with slideshows, not worth your time in my opinion. They are all slice-of-life or comedy sketches but just filler quality.

Continuation of the story, even better than the first part!

3 Code Geass: Akito the Exiled

The side story is set in Europe during the Britannian invasion of the continent between Season R1 & R2, but it lacks a lot of the elements that made Code Geass great, especially in the Strategies & Tactics. The action is ok but nothing outstanding and the plot is weak filler quality, breaking some important rules set in the canon.

"awesome animation work but nothing related to Code Geass series except the title.

too many geass users, no one use his properly though :) and with that happy ending i mistooke the genres to drama, romance.

so, if you are watching this expecting someone who's like lelouch vi britannia my advice: don't waste your time." -tsukivalo

The dub is ok.

7 Code Geass Movie: Lelouch of the Re;surrection

Code Geass Movie: Lelouch of the Re;surrection

Optional

I'm of two minds for this movie, I think it is ok, but just slightly better than average and not on par with the rest of the series, yet I still think that most fans of the show will want to see it regardless.

You should know that this is a continuation of the compilation movie's story and not of the TV Series. I definitely recommend you watch the series over the movies as that is the better story. For the compilation, they remove a lot of good stuff and that made some changes to the story, most notably, a secondary character which has one of the most memorable deaths in the TV Series still survives on the movies, and was added here in such a minor role that might as well they should just have skipped the character, as is mostly irrelevant in the new story.

They did manage to add a good antagonist for this new sequel, which is why I still think this movie is salvageable, but the plot feels rushed, with some twists just there to move the story forward.

In the end, this is a movie made to capitalize on the name of the franchise and they didn't have the guts to move the story forward, hence it remains average and "just for the fans".

If you are interested in learning the differences between the TV Series & The Compilation Movies you can read them here (just bear in mind that they contain spoilers for everything):

"More than anything else, this is a movie for those who want to see the Code Geass cast again. As long as you have limited expectations and are willing to adapt to the changes in format, presentation and characterization, the movie may reward you with a good time.

If you're not a fan, this will do little for you. If you want everything to be the same as before, results will be mixed..." -GolbeztheGreat
