Best Animes From 2020

I only included the animes I have watched from these years. I'm not including Sequels when quality declines or when the story started on previous years. I am including Sequels where it makes sense to keep watching, in order to complete the story.
1 Tower of God

Tower of God

Despite the common fantasy setting where a group of adventurers climbs a tower, this is mostly an allegoric work that presents the viewer with different moral dilemmas as exemplified by the conduct of the protagonists. This is done in a subtle way that compares the thought process of different characters against each other. In my opinion, this is what sets it apart from other works and what makes it special. Among other themes explored are social classes and following rules imposed by those in power, the sort of rules that may just be convenient to them; the need to improve your life and change the system for the better, there is also lots of focus on getting to know what you want and what is important to you in life, etc.

The anime has plenty of action and great use of tactics & strategies. The characters are interesting but only a few get developed and shown their backstories, this is in part due to the fact that this is just the first part of a longer story.

It's also interesting to mention that this is a South Korean web manhwa written and illustrated by S.I.U.

'According to the author, each floor is the size of the North American continent. Each floor often has its own culture, language and governance systems, and it is not uncommon to have nations living in isolation and unaware of the existence of the tower.' -Wikipedia

The dub is excellent.

2 Darwin's Game

Darwin's Game

I found this anime very similar to Gantz, following a similar plotline and setting, but lacking shock value and not as crazy. The First Episode is not very good, but it gets better over time, overall, I'll say it's well-executed and entertaining. Unfortunately, it's one of those shows where the Arc finishes but the main story is waiting for another season, so this is just the introduction to the main plot. If you like survival and high-stake games you will probably want to give this one a try.

'This anime offers nothing original, it's your typical high stakes game anime with some battle royale sprinkled in. Characters are nothing special either, some common tropes are present (Shuka being a little yandere, newbie being a natural talent, mysterious information broker, etc.). The first episode is especially mediocre, with some laughable bad guys.

However, if you get past that it's a really fun watch with some amazing fight scenes and interesting superpowers. Character development is present as well, some of them have pretty interesting backstories and getting to know more about them offers an interesting insight.' -Fluffs

The dub is good.

3 Moriarty the Patriot

Moriarty the Patriot

This is one of the best animes based on Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes series. It is a prequel, focusing on the youth of Holmes' nemesis, mathematics prodigy, William James Moriarty.

What a great idea to focus on Moriarty and in this iteration he takes on a Robin Hood persona.

The focus of the show is on revolution and justice, but it doesn't concern with the moral questions about a line you can't cross. Instead, this is a show that does not downplay revenge & violence as a means to achieve your goals, and therefore, it uses murder as a tool to achieve the protagonists' goals. You can just watch Episode 1 to have an idea of how the whole show is going to be.

Most stories take 1-3 episodes and the quality is pretty consistent throughout the show until the very last case on season 2, which was the only disappointing one for me, perhaps was a filler? Who knows.

'It's a fresh of breath air for any fan of Sherlockian media. Not only is Sherlock depicted vastly different from other media but we also get to see his internal struggles. He isn't an entire mystery but still complicated. He's got his good sides that everyone is fond of but still acknowledges his downfalls and even troubling habits. It's also soooo appealing to see Moriarty get some attention. To his depiction and values in life. However, this deep character delved profile seems to only extend to Sherlock, Moriarty, and Albert. Leaving out Watson, Louis, and various other 'secondary' cast. Of course, this is the 1st season that seems to be setting up a bigger story between Moriarty and Sherlock.

Overall. If you're a fan of Sherlock media then this will be a wonderful watch. If you're not that keen in either murder mystery or Sherlock then this would best be skipped. It does nothing overly amazing but it manages to be just above average. Only the slightest.' -UltQWERTY

'...Holmes is one of the most popular detective characters in the whole world. After all, there are far too many movie adaptations around the whole world. Unfortunately, many people seem to miss another genius that you can analyze over and over again and find something new about him, someone who is not less charismatic and talented than Holmes himself. Someone who could have been even more of a genius than Holmes, had he not been a villain. Of course, I mean Professor James Moriarty, the ‘Napoleon of the crime world’, a professor of mathematics and the person who gained recognition of Sherlock Holmes.

For some reason, this particular character is often forgotten. And this is something Japanese mangaka decided to fix in 2016 and make a story about the youngest professor of Durham University (Sherlock Holmes: The Unauthorized Biography), a brilliant mathematician and a criminal, William James Moriarty. No, this is not a mistake. Rather, Conan Doyle himself was mistaken, (and, most likely, he simply did not think of it) when he gave the two Moriarty brothers the same name.' -Gaunter

The dub is good.

4 Moriarty the Patriot 2nd Season

Moriarty the Patriot 2nd Season

Continuation of the story.

I have to say, I found Episodes 23-24 'The Final Problem' terribly lacking. Filler material perhaps? (since the manga is still ongoing). All stories were great until that point, so don't expect a great ending or just skip them altogether.

5 Deca-Dence

Deca-Dence

Fans of the Post-apocalyptic & Video Games genres will probably like this anime a lot. It starts pretty generic, but by the second episode, an innovative plot twist gives a breath of fresh air to the setting. However, the success of this anime is in its execution, there is no time wasted, and everything progresses smoothly from one part to the next, keeping the story interesting and surprising you at every turn.

'Decadence is a surprising addition to this season (summer 2020) maybe because I didn't expect much but it did a great job keeping me interest great world building, characters, animations and story all give this a very unique feel. I would say if you can make it past episode 3/4 then finish it, it is definitely a good standard for the adventure genre.

first the animation it's really good, nothing is boring to look at motion is super fluid they did an awesome job. BUT there is cgi ugh for those who hate it yeah it is in here but it doesn't persist long enough to ruin anything. So nice job

the story is great I am super generous to stories that break from the status quo, it's a unique premise and once you get over the brief confusion you'll be in for great adventure story.

so to wrap it up decadence is a good watch and is well worth your time so sit back and enjoy!' -TheRogueNob

'Laying out the injustices and indignities of life under capitalism are Deca-Dence’s strengths. The idea that no matter how hard you fight, there’s always a struggle tomorrow. Fear divides neighbors and a ruling class role plays as the suffering for tepid bursts of adrenaline. The show does fall into the trap that sacrifice is always necessary for betterment when determination is such an anime staple and rolls into a progressive story effortlessly. Course correction comes a little late, though better than never, as the cast actively subvert their stations and break the system’s rules outright.' -DeathBecomesDavid

The dub is good.

6 Brand New Animal

Brand New Animal

This is an original Japanese anime TV Series produced by Studio Trigger.

So this story deals obviously with racism & discrimination, however, one of the aspects of the show that I liked the most is how everything is orchestrated from the shadows. At times is hard to tell who is lying and what their real intentions are, I think this part was executed really well, while you get hints through the episodes so you can figure it out through facts. The story shows different political maneuvers to control the population and move them to act in a certain way. And the show does all of these while still remaining entertaining and light, it never gets overcomplicated or too serious, in part, thanks to the characters' personalities. Some parts of the plot are predictable but not a big deal.

'The story revolves around social injustice, poverty, discrimination and wraps up in a very conspirative manner. Just replace the beastmen with aliens and it becomes pretty realistic. The best about it is that it has a nice pace and keeps the mystery almost till the end. But the end feels rather sped up and there are a bunch of deus ex machina moments in the last episode.' -goR0n

'The overall story seems disjointed. It almost seems like they wrote it as they went along rather than having planned out the plot in advance. That being said, nearly every single episode is satisfying in some way. It delivers on action, excitement, drama, and even mystery to a small degree.

While the artwork is lo-fi, don't think the artists were slacking. It was certainly a choice that serves to immerse the audience in this world. The animation is top-notch. It's definitely been influenced by western cartoons which contributes to this show's unique visual personality.

The characters actually have depth. Nobody is stagnant. Whether this is due to actual character development or the unveiling of new information to the audience depends on the character.

The soundtrack and effects were great. The musical scenes, which were few and far between, always seemed appropriate and never felt forced.

The leadup to the finale was totally tight butthole in spite of being incredibly predictable. I never thought this would turn into a thriller. Unfortunately, the last episode was marred by an unfulfilling conclusion, likely due to the writers only having a single episode to wrap things up. They even went so far as to skip the intro to pack in more content. It really seems like there should have been 1 or 2 more episodes. While the end was still satisfying to some degree it could have been substantially better and is practically the only reason this doesn't have a perfect score.' -enb

The dub is excellent!

7 In/Spectre

In/Spectre

I have mentioned this several times in my reviews, in a work of fiction (especially sci-fi & supernatural), a lot of times what is important is what you 'read between the lines' and the analogies you can make to the real world! If you are just watching this show expecting to be about action, human vs. monsters, comedy, or romance; then you'll be disappointed.

For me at least, the great thing about this anime is the magnificent examples it provides regarding how the media can manipulate the truth of an event and fabricate details that are logical but a complete lie. It shows how myths can be created by the masses when we let speculation without factual proof guide our logic, and how a single person can use tools like the internet to influence a community.

I'm mentioning this because if you are not making this analogy, then you are only watching half of the story, even if you watch the 12 episodes! And unfortunately, at least in the reviews, the vast majority of viewers have chosen to focus on the anatomy and laws of physics the characters should follow, and for an anime based on ghosts, Youkai, and the supernatural; that is the wrong theme to focus on. This is a thinker's story for people who value witty dialog, like to create their own theories to solve mysteries, and can make the proper analogies to real life to decipher the hidden meaning of the story. After all, What makes you think that this sort of thing doesn't happen in real life?

'Let's get straight to the point. It's a very slow-paced show that relies heavily on its dialogue and its thorough build-up, which simply isn't for everybody. I think most people will appreciate the cast due to the witty and cheeky personalities but will probably lose interest in the main plot around the halfway point,

I personally really enjoyed the show and not just for its main characters. There is a lot of focus on the what-ifs and for somebody that enjoys trying to figure out what the main plot of a show is and where things will be going, I appreciated the time the show took to dive into each what-if situation. But there are moments where it falls a little flat.' -Gozza

The dub is great.

8 In/Spectre 2nd Season

In/Spectre 2nd Season

Continuation of the story.

9 Dorohedoro

Dorohedoro

This show is quite different from the norm, a weird mix of horror, lots of gore, and comedy that is borderline disgusting. In all honesty, it only does the gore well, the rest is just lukewarm, but what it does really good is the world-building that shows the incredible imagination of the author Q Hayashida, using detailed backgrounds and characters with a punk style, I do not only find this world interesting but also, is one of the highlights of the show. It will help to read about the setting so you understand how everything works, as it's not well explained in the show.

Another highlight of the show is the mystery of who Kaiman really is? and how he got to be this way? Finding this is basically the main story and helps to tie all episodes together as otherwise, they are closer to a slice-of-life show with all characters just going about their daily lives and following their misadventures in a strange new world.

The animation manages to capture this world and is really something to behold, everything looks 'otherworldly' and even the odd movements of some characters help with this feeling. There is a great use of color & textures, using mostly a muted dark color palette but with bright colors for the highlights that even make them look neon, just watch the intro and you'll see what I mean. They use this effect to highlight the blood as well.

The music is equally awesome from beginning to end and an important part of the feel of this world. It's really a good fit for this world and its punk look.

All characters have interesting & really unique designs. It's clear that a lot of care & time went to create each of them, even for characters that only appear for a little while on this show and barely seem to have any importance in the story (at least so far). This goes a long way toward making the world feel real. All their personalities have some sort of quirk, but only some characters get a backstory (although more may be developed in future seasons). There are no typical villains, they don't act like punks as you would expect, rather their lives and acts are more complex, which helps to create interest in who they are. I'm sure everyone will have their favorite character.

Overall, this is a very original show, and will definitely recommend it to anyone who is not afraid of a little gore & violence. This story is left incomplete, waiting for a sequel that hope comes out soon, but the ride is really worth it and a feast for the eyes accompanied by good music.

'this show is an instant classic, it has a very unique world building and crazy characters. The line between good and evil gets burned since the first episode, all the characters are messed up but also very likeable.Another good thing is how well the mix between 2d and cgi is done which is rare. The anime is very violent and there's gore in every episode but it's also filled with comedy and mystery that keeps you hyped.' -illSmith

'Everything about this show is awesome and it's one of those shows that I'll be recommending to others. It's got excellent in-depth world-building, out of the ordinary characters that you'll love with some great backstories and there is plenty of unnecessary violence to support its dark humor.' -Gozza

The dub is great!

10 Wave, Listen to Me!

Wave, Listen to Me!

This is a good Seinen Comedy and one that is quite different from the norm. Just watch the first episode and if you find yourself laughing, then you'll like the rest of the show. Otherwise, this is not for you. The comedy is created with witty remarks and crazy fantasy, the comebacks between characters is what makes it shine.

'At last: an anime made for adults that doesn’t involve excess gore and violence, a workplace drama without the stuffy romance plot, and a female protagonist who doesn’t resort to cheap fanservice to charm the socks off your feet. For the gloomy millennial going through a whatever kind of crisis, Wave, Listen to Me! has got it all, and then some, by way of radio broadcasts you’ll never want to end and a main character you’ll relate with immediately. If you don’t know what you’re doing or where you’re headed, then don’t worry! Minare Koda doesn’t know any of that shit, either. And look, ma, she didn’t even need to go to another world or suddenly gain magical powers to fill that hole in her aimless little heart!' -Franconator

The dub is excellent! I think the voice actors did an amazing job, especially the main protagnist, and I strongly recommend it since it's a fast-paced show with lots of dialogs. I didn't watch it in subs, too much dialog to enjoy reading.

11 Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!

This is an original anime about the industry, and while it may seem similar to Bakuman. (who focuses on authors, concepts & storytelling) & Shirobako (which focuses on management & administrative aspects of the anime industry), here the focus is more on animation production & techniques, as well as early concepts for world-building. In a way, it seems like a letter of apology for why some studios like Science SARU itself who just tend to focus on animation alone while largely forgetting to write a story.

Having said that, what it lacks in storytelling, greatly compensates with imagination & visual arts. They really did a great job of showing how an animator's mind works and everything that gets involved in the process to bring an idea to life. You are sure to have some moments of awe during this show.

'There’s so much love and passion for the medium oozing out of Eizouken, and it’s hard not to get invested. Sure, the high-energy nature and how specialized it is in this field can turn some away, but it’s hard not to appreciate just how much about anime the series covers. Its heart isn’t just with animation, as the show has a few beautiful character moments and emotional climaxes of its own. The likable characters and wonderful visuals accentuate the joyful feeling of this show and how much it cares about what it covers. The show does not shy away from the darker and more complicated aspects of being an animator, even though it doesn’t dwell on the grim nature of it all. Eizouken’s simply a treat to watch, and certainly a contender for anime of the year moving forward. It understands, and that’s what allows it to shine so brightly.' -CodeBlazeFate

'The Animation is really what it's all about. Quite literally. This anime by its very subject matter, lives or dies by it, so it's super important that it be cohesive with what it preaches. And it does perfectly by that metric. The animation is some of the most expressive and fluid, merging with different artstyles and animation styles, experimenting all over the place. It's hard to put into words how great it is exactly. It manages to make the Eizouken's projects feel so distinct from the 'real' world while also feeling just as high quality. Its dynamic approach to animation is difficult to ignore. I just can't praise it enough really.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken is an anime that will inspire creative types everywhere. That's the first important thing about it, and the reason it has so much pull with certain people in the anime community. There are of course people who won't get it at all, why others love it so much. And there's no right or wrong opinion to be had on it. But hopefully this review can shed some light on why so many people, like myself, really enjoy it.' -Rascal

This anime deserves a Dub!

12 Arte

Arte

In all honesty, what this anime has going for it is mainly the unique setting, both for the art as well as the era they live in. Although I wouldn't know how historically accurate it is, nor how true will it be for a woman living in those times. At least is very entertaining to watch.

The anime focuses on the way Art was made during those times, how it was sold, for who it was created; as well as the difficulties for a woman to have a profession during those times when everything that was expected of them was to get married. If this seems interesting to you then you will probably like this show, everyone else may want to move on.

'Fresh and entertaining. Arte reminds me of Thoru Honda from Fruits Basket. She always see positive side of live. Pure, innocent and very motivated person. She deals with reality in her own unique, lighthearted way. This anime shows the viewer difficulty of times that the women were living in.' -Manchineela

'The story, though, is pretty good. The characters are sweet and have the cutest relationships. It's a cool message about overcoming trials, facing off with social norms, and finding your path in life. I love the story and the characters and the animation style and the clothes and the painting and all the simple interactions Arte has. They're wonderful.' -StellaeSamos

The dub is ok.

13 Smile Down the Runway

Smile Down the Runway

Similar to the above, what's special about this anime is the Fashion Industry setting. Having said that, working conditions and the environment still use the old classic cliche from the Fashion Industry about how rude they are to treat each other, full of tantrum prima-donnas. I'm not involved in the fashion industry, nor do I know much about it, and the last thing I saw related to fashion was The Devil Wears Prada from 2006; so I'm not sure how accurate is this for the current state of the industry, but it seems absurd for an industry at the vanguard of innovation to still be using working practices reminiscent from the industrial era from the past century, lol.

Regardless, we all know people who are quick to judge, criticize our talents and discourage our dreams. Having the courage and the confidence to go against this and persevere is the focus of this anime and something that does well. There are a lot of critiques about the fashion industry and how it favors certain stereotypes. And is not just critiques, it offers different perspectives, solutions, and examples of a better approach.

Still, this anime may not be for everyone, besides the fashion industry focus, there are also cultural differences between the East & West. For example, the practice of bowing does not exist in the west and we are more open to criticizing working conditions and blaming our own bosses for their mistakes and mistreatments, so the conversations & resolutions to these problems will probably go a different way on the west than how they are solved here in the anime with extreme bowing. Perhaps this is why I feel a lot of the problems presented here belong to the industrial revolution era. Is this anime a window into how things are still done in the East, even in our current era? I don't know, but no working conditions should rob a person of their dignity and most people I know will say that a job like that is not worth having. Yet, a lot of characters in this anime put up with a lot of mistreatment for the sake of their dream, just because this is the state of the fashion industry, and at the same time, this is what this anime criticizes and what the characters in the story are trying to change. So in the end, making all these considerations and pondering about all these things is what I ended up enjoying the show the most. Whether you see it as a window to the current state of the fashion industry or a window to the past and how long have we come to improve working conditions, is up to you what you can get out of this anime, which is at least entertaining.

You should try watching the first 3 episodes, which is the first mini-arc, and that will probably be enough to figure out if this is for you or not.

'The review for this anime depends on what perspective you're going to take. If it's all about picking up the storyline based on reality of the social situation- the fashion industry, then there's a lot of mess and lack of research. It can be not the most auspicious anime for those who had a well background. On the other hand, the story is more than- or at least has different to convey. It shows how dreams play a role on finding our motivation here, and pursuing our passion for our purpose. That to say in a more life reality view.' -Reinjy

The dub is good.

14 Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen

This is fun mindless entertainment with good animation, but nothing more. The story is average, the plot is dumb and full of plot holes contrived to make the characters fight for any excuse, but the characters are fun and the animation is good. The fights are ok, well-animated, but they don't always make sense in terms of tactics, physics and often cut so you can only see the end result of the punch but not the punch itself; sometimes they resolve in ridiculous ways like magical idol girl transformation.

So this is best for people who just like disconnecting their mind and being entertained with good graphics.

The dub is good and I recommend it better than the subs, so you can follow the action more easily, instead of having your eyes glued to the subs.

15 Jujutsu Kaisen 0

17 I'm Standing on a Million Lives

I'm Standing on a Million Lives

Behold another Isekai, I honestly can't get enough as I love to explore new worlds, this is one of my favorite genres so I might be a little biased on this review.

About the Similarities & Differences with Other Isekais:

Besides the common RPG Fantasy elements, this anime takes a similar approach to Grimgar, trying to create a premise as if someone was realistically summoned to an RPG Fantasy World, with all the consequences of suddenly being placed in such a world with different values, where killing is allowed, and justice is left for each individual to uphold rather than the law or police.

The question about if you are meeting 'real people' or NPCs? is up in the air (similar to Overlord), and the subject is tackled head-on in the last episodes. The focus of the story is the psychology of the main protagonists who seem very detached from reality throughout the show, each with their personal issues and having to deal between the 'real' & 'fantasy' worlds, and this creates great character development while also planting the seeds with great potential for future seasons.

So it's an RPG Fantasy that explores different psychological issues through its characters. If this premise is expanded in future seasons it will become a great show, which is what I'm betting on because of the title. I honestly was attracted to this show because it had a great title, it not only sounds good but it's also very ambiguous: 'I'm Standing on a Million Lives', is the protagonist boasting that he is better than a million lives and therefore he is standing on top of them? or are a million lives depending on him to save them? Or did he kill a million lives and is standing on their corpses after conquering them? There are many interpretations of the title and the story seems to be exploring them through the story. I just hope that this premise doesn't get ignored in future seasons (as it happened with Tanya where the whole premise against the supposed God was largely ignored).

Also, for once, this show has no fan-service, nor harem (although there is one guy with many girls, only one shows love interest while the rest are wary of him due to his personality). At least for me, this is a plus that automatically makes it better than other shows who fill their time with nonsense fluff.

The story starts quite innocent and similar to other light-hearted fantasy shows, but it slowly shows that there is more danger than you initially thought. It seems most of the bad reviews were based on the first episodes only, as you can see by the date they were made the show hasn't finished airing. You really have to get to the end in order to appreciate the story and what this show is trying to do. This is just the introduction to a larger story, so it's too soon to tell how good or bad the show will become.

The characters are likable and each of them seems to be set to represent a certain group of people with its own issues to explore through the story.

Both Animation & Sound are average, nothing fancy here.

Overall, if you just want to shut your brain and don't care about exploring psychological issues with this show, then you'll find it pretty average, but if you take into consideration the psychology and issues of each character you'll find a new premise on this isekai, with enough differences to make it stand out from the crowd, enough to make it above average. We still have to wait for future seasons to see how the story will unfold and which direction is going to take. The initial arc is completed on this season though. I hope more people give this show a chance.

The dub is very good.

18 I'm Standing on a Million Lives 2nd Season

I'm Standing on a Million Lives 2nd Season

Continuation of the story.

19 Talentless Nana

Talentless Nana

This is one of those shows that starts one way and then it has a big plot twist at the end of the first episode that completely changes the genre of this anime. So you should know that is mostly Psychological & Shounen. It has some horror & thrills too, so if you are expecting a slice of life this show is not for you. Beware that some of the bad reviews are due to this change of genre, as it reached the wrong audience and just trolled them.

This show is not for everyone, it's mostly about manipulation & deceit and is largely done for entertainment purposes rather than the exploration of values & concepts. It's only at the very end that you get to see that perhaps there is more to the story than you originally think, but that exploration of values is left for a second season that may never happen.

This show is hard to recommend because you cannot watch the typical 2-3 episodes to make up your mind, it sort of needs you to commit to watching about 9 out of the 12 episodes so you can have a complete picture of the story.

It's also hard to explain why this show is good and what are the flaws without spoilers, as the enjoyment of the plot depends a lot on the twists it has, so I advise you to stay away from reviews until you have watched some episodes.

'I am really surprised to say that this series was actually quite decent and this is despite what people think of it saying it's boring, etc which I totally disagree from my personal point of view. Yes it's not a masterpiece or original but it was far from boring for me, it was in fact, interesting enough!...

By the way without trying to spoil it, the ending made me cry man! You should definitely check out this mystery horror series, as I said before, it's really a decent show of 2020 that I've ever watched!' -TheNuisance1

20 Jiang Ziya

Jiang Ziya

This is a good story, which prompts us to think by ourselves and question why we do things in a certain way, rather than just follow orders blindly. It also warns us not to follow people by their glorified status, but rather pay attention to their actions and always seek the truth.

Bare in mind that this is a Donghua (Chinese Animation), and as such, this follows Asian culture and beliefs. It will be helpful to know a little about Cultivation in order to understand the setting, its powers, social structure, and what's going on in general; but the movie is done in such a way that is not completely necessary to know about the culture, since the main theme is something we can all understand. And despite touching on serious themes like the death of a loved one, genocide, and betrayal, it does so in a way that remains kid friendly.

'This was an enjoyable movie. This movie really took me for a ride. It made me cry multiple times. It some scenes it gave me insight how people who went through a genocide felt after dying and what the could feel if they ever came back from the dead. Also how those who servived betrayal such as genocide would want revenge on the one who put them through that.' -Daijanae

The dub is great.

21 BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense.

BOFURI: I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense.

This is yet another iteration of a group of friends playing an RPG game and is still quite entertaining if you like those types of shows. If you ever wonder what happens when you max out a particular skill this anime will show you some unexpected consequences. Other than that, it does not offer anything new in terms of story, actually, it feels like watching someone else playing a game while doing some epic stuff by chance. The excellence is in the execution that keeps moving the story forward with interesting gaming sequences, characters & world-building.

The main story was left incomplete, waiting for another season.

'While this isn't the most story driven show and yes it's another anime taking place (almost entirely) in a video game... I loved it. It's light hearted and ridiculous as you watch Maple find a new way to basically find some new skill to use in some weird OP way, but the whole time I was laughing my head off. If you enjoy the video game setting and are looking for something light hearted to watch, this is a great option in my opinion.' -ElTrio1

The dub is good.

22 By the Grace of the Gods

By the Grace of the Gods

This is very similar in style & concept to Ascendance of a Bookworm, if you like one then you'll probably like the other one, however, Ascendance of a Bookworm is much better as it also has some mystery elements, the way they go about things is much smarter, while here is more Deus Ex Machina, and there is way less conflict. So it's mostly about the slice-of-life than anything else with an overpowered character. It's not a failure though, but it will mostly appeal to people who like this type of concept and the slice-of-life.

People who read the manga tend to hate this adaptation, so if you are one of those you may want to skip it.

'By the Grace of the Gods is anime that leaves you with a smile on your face. At least, that is the impression I had after watching it. I absolutely loved the characters, not just the main character. Everyone was so kind, giving, and helpful toward one another, something that we need to see more in anime and in life. It's a classic fantasy adventure anime where the main character is transported to another world, which are my favorite, and he meets kind people who show him this new world. I gave this a higher score because it left me with a positive feeling, and I liked the creative way he used magic and the slimes as a tamer. The music was great, especially the violin and guitar, in the bird scene. The story was okay, but there was no real conflict or obstacles to overcome. I actually liked that about it though. It was pleasant without making the audience feel bored, or like nothing was happening in the story at all. It felt more like an OP character setting goals to reach step by step.  I hope there will be a season 2, to see where the characters end up when they reunite.' -Elodie22

The dub is very good.

===============================================

Season 2, however, is more of the same, with just 'slice of life', no action ever happens, there are no struggles to overcome, and everything is just nice and peachy, like in a dream, to the point it feels unreal and boring. So I don't really recommend it, unless you love those kinds of things.

The dub is good.

24 Somali and the Forest Spirit

Somali and the Forest Spirit

This is not my type of show, I usually prefer something with more adversity in them, but I can understand why so many people love this anime. If you are looking for a slice of life with a relaxing feeling that is all about parenting this show is for you. If you like cute things, even if they are a little forced, then you may like this as well. The animation & imagination of this world are superb and are what kept me going. There is a little bit of action on some episodes, but barely something to mention.

The main story was left incomplete, waiting for another season.

'Despite dealing with some strong issues from time to time, the story itself is one of love and self realization, where both Somali and her Golem companion learn to care for each other and grow as individuals, bonding throughout their journey in a way that I can only describe as wholesome, adorable and entertaining; a wonderful Father-daughter dynamic I've seldom seen before.

Most of the characters they encounter are relatable in some way...

The animation is beautiful and the world they travel through is outstandingly gorgeous, the great variety of creatures and the stories of those they encounter along the way paints a rather harsh yet powerful sense of how the world they are in operates, leading you to root even further for Somali and her monster Dad to succeed in their quest.

Overall, it's a wonderful story which I think everyone should experience at least once; it made me cry, laugh, scream, it created such a wide array of emotions which few works of fiction have ever managed to accomplish.' -LordSeyama

'I usually prefer action or ecchi comedy and so it was with no small trepidition that I started this show. However I was supried to find a griping yet heartwarming story that was in my opinion enhanced by a realistic perception and treatment of humans and also the portrayal of how any sentient species is capable of monsterous acts when they have power over another. I say heartwarming because there are several characters  who look past the differnces in race and befrind the main character. also this show has a lot of character development for the golem, especially' -lostm1

The dub is excellent!

Pianoman

This is an interesting & innovative fantasy short with great music & animation. The mystery is left open to interpretation.

This is primarily a Psychological show, where the protagonists use their powers to get into the minds of other people. Similar concept to Inception, but not exactly like that, as the rules are different. This is not explained very well at the beginning, which makes the story quite confusing and hard to figure out what's going on, but if you stick to the end everything will be explained in full.

The focus of the show is the psychological state of mind of the protagonists, who have been groomed from childhood to obey their organization. Several themes are explored, including what happens when you find out that everything you knew was a lie, can you condition someone to act against their values? trust issues, dependency on others, etc.

This anime requires that you pay attention to details and have an active inquisitive mind. If you just want to shut your brain and are looking for fun entertainment, this show is not for you. Questioning the motives of each character, wondering about why they act the way they do, and trying to decipher the tactics & strategies employed by each character; are some of the things that make this show enjoyable.

I wouldn't say is a masterpiece though, it's not as brainiac and elaborated as Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for example, but it's still a good change of pace and a good try. Unfortunately, although the arc is completed, the main story is left for another season.

'So who will like this and who won't. In my opinion, those who would like this are those who want a show that makes them think a little. Not in a way of changing your world view or whatever. But the show has a bit that it throws at you at any moment, and you might feel overwhelmed if you miss given bits. Those who might not like this is those who want a show that you can 'turn off your brain'.

Something that should be noted is the animation. The animation of how someone can turn into a fish, a cat, water, and so on is great. The people who worked on this actually put the extra mile in. But at the same time, this is what gives you a lot of info in a short bit.' -Crua9

This anime deserves a Dub!

27 Infinite Dendrogram

Infinite Dendrogram

If you like Adventure Fantasy RPG games/stories then you're going to love this anime. Everyone else may want to pass as it will be just average at best for them. The whole focus of this story is to showcase the type of adventures you could have in this world of infinite possibilities. There is some combat that also includes strategies & tactics, not just the action. The story also explores your beliefs & values, considering that the NPCs are showcased as real-life people. What kind of player would you decide to be in this world?

Some people have a problem with the pacing considering it too fast, but for me was great, straight to the point with no wasted time in fluff. Some people also find it too generic, and that is true, it's the standard story and if you have seen one of these you'll have an idea of the show, but while is generic, it's also a good iteration of this story, the fights are entertaining, the characters are likable, and the exploration of moral values was well done through the story. The lack of fan service is a plus for me. Overall, if you enjoy these types of shows you'll like this one.

The dub is ok.

28 Wu Shan Wu Xing

Wu Shan Wu Xing

This has good animation showcasing great battles. The story is very simple of demons & humans antagonizing each other, it's just an introduction and so far is hard to tell which of them is the real monster in the story. I hope future seasons develop the story further, but so far, I love the animation style, which is very colorful and artistic.
