💘 For the Genuinely Romantic at Heart 💌

List is in alphabetical order. Based on anime I've actually watched. This list showcases my inner girl. It's for anyone who's looking for "quality" heart-wrenching, lighthearted, mushy-gushy, shoujo, mature, or tear-jerking romance in their anime. Created: 2019
1 And you thought there is never a girl online?

And you thought there is never a girl online?

It's a very lighthearted, simple romance anime featuring one guy and a bunch of girls who like to game. It starts off slow as a possible harem, but it's not. As the series continues there are some genuinly sincere mushy-gushy moments that can be quite endearing. The annoying Ako becomes very likeable throughout the story's progression.

2 Domestic Girlfriend

Domestic Girlfriend

A frequent heart-wrenching filled anime that serves us a Mature Romance (unofficially) as a main course, but with an extra large side of adolescence.

3 Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro

Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro

Although Nagatoro can get carried away with the bullying of Hachioji, it actually becomes a significant part of the slow-building relationship between them. As the series progresses, their lighthearted romance subtly becomes more and more transparent, even if they themselves do not completely realize it. It's more sweet and charming that my first impression of it.

4 Emma: A Victorian Romance

Emma: A Victorian Romance

Quite possibly the most Mature Romance on this list. It's filled with meaningful heart-wrenching and tear-jerking moments. I cried my eyes out with this one.

5 Emma: A Victorian Romance - Second Act

Emma: A Victorian Romance - Second Act

What more can I say that I already haven't? The most heart-wrenching and tear-jerking moment I may have felt in a romance anime happens here. I can't say when because you need to experience it for yourself.

6 Engaged to the Unidentified

Engaged to the Unidentified

A simple, cute, and lighthearted romance that features one of the most realistic, all-around anime females in Kobeni.

7 Fuuka

Fuuka

A lighthearted romance with weirdly awesome leading lady in Fuuka. Although it contains elements of Ecchi, it is very mild and not the main draw of the anime (aside from episode #6).

The main romantic relationship takes an abrupt different direction around midway in the series, albeit temporary. However, it may seem a little upsetting and misplaced compared to the direction of the first few episodes, but hang in there. It finds its way back through some heart-wrenching moments and tid bits of intense drama. Koyuki is a stand-up character indeed.

It should be noted that this anime is indirectly related to the anime Suzuka.

8 Gamers!

Gamers!

Another simple and lighthearted anime where you'll have some moments that are really funny , but the most memorable ones being both those mushy-gushy and meaningful scenes. Karen is practically a puddle of goo with her crushing on Amano.

9 Golden Time

Golden Time

A somewhat quirky Mature Romance that is filled with heightened moments of drama and comedy. Sometimes they don't quite work, but more often then not they sure do.

10 Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway

Higehiro: After Being Rejected, I Shaved and Took in a High School Runaway

This is a lighthearted romance with some serious, more mature undertones to it. It starts off really strong with solid pacing, but starts to waiver ever so slightly shortly after midway through the series. Regardless, there is a certain charm to it and you won't find very many characters who are truly as good-natured and big-hearted as Yoshida is.

11 Kamisama Kiss

Kamisama Kiss

A clearly defined Shoujo anime featuring the ever so popular Tomoe and the absolutely adorable and charming Nanami.

12 Karin

Karin

One of the very first Shoujo anime I've watched that is generally lighthearted and cute.

13 Kokoro Connect

Kokoro Connect

It feels like a Mature Romance (unofficially) with some of the heavier dramatic elements intertwined within.

14 Maid-sama!

Maid-sama!

One of the Rom-Com Shoujo anime to make this list. The way Takumi teases and fauns over poor Misaka is both funny and often charming.

15 Masamune-kun's Revenge

Masamune-kun's Revenge

16 Please Teacher

Please Teacher

Amidst the slightly "uncomfortable" concept of a teacher and a high school student being romantically involved and married to each other, there are a few heart-wrenching moments that tugged at my heart strings. The Ecchi is practically non-existent, which helps to make the romance more appealing and real.

17 Recovery of an MMO Junkie

Recovery of an MMO Junkie

An absolutely adorable Mature Romance between a typical Salaryman and a secluded NEET. Both are great characters.

18 Rent-A-Girlfriend

Rent-A-Girlfriend

19 Romeo x Juliet

Romeo x Juliet

For anyone familiar with William Shakespeare's tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, knows exactly what I'm talking about. It's GONZO's own "different" and unique way of telling that story, which has the same tear-jerking moment in the end.

20 Sailor Moon

Sailor Moon

A fluffy, mushy-gushy, Shoujo anime that magically brings out the inner girl in me.

21 Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It

Science Fell in Love, So I Tried to Prove It

Not the strongest romantic anime on this list, but a unique one at that. Using science to try and prove or disprove romance is comical and quirky, but easy to watch and likeable. It's definitely on the more lighthearted side.

22 Skip Beat!

Skip Beat!

Shoujo anime that's almost Josei, and features the wonderful, strong female lead in Kyoko.

23 Snow White with the Red Hair

Snow White with the Red Hair

Both Shoujo and Mature Romance...you can't get much better than that, especially when the anime is so darn good!

24 Tada Never Falls in Love

Tada Never Falls in Love

It has an excellent cast that generate some good laughs amongst all the heart-wrenching and tear-jerking moments. Some are so filled with angst as well that I could've used a tranquilizer to calm down, especially in the last 4-5 episodes.

[UPDATE - May 2021]

I watched it a second time in 2021 and the intensity of emotion was even greater than I remember from the first watch through.

25 Tsuredure Children

Tsuredure Children

A Short Episodes, (High) School Life anime that offers a large diverse group of lighthearted relationships that are easy to follow in this short, but sweet rom-com.

26 Waiting in the Summer

Waiting in the Summer

A lighthearted youthful romance that has some pretty heart-wrenching and tear-jerking moments in it.

27 Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

This is definitely a Mature Romance, Adult Couples anime that I highly recommend, even more so if you are an Otaku or Video Gamer. The comedy elements are spot-on and the relationships are realistic and relatable. I only wish it was longer than just 11 episodes.

28 Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

A rom-com with a few surprise heart-wrenching moments in it. I simply love the Ryuu-Urara relationship throughout the anime's entirety.
