😲 Biggest [Positive ➕] Surprise Anime Series 😲

In alphabetical order. Based on anime I've actually watched and personal preference only. Regardless, each of these anime deserve to be on this list. Created: Aug-04-2017, Updated: Apr-24-2019
1 A Certain Scientific Railgun

A Certain Scientific Railgun

Going into this series I was afraid it was going to be some Shoujo-ai, GL anime where nothing actually happens. Through the first four episodes I thought I was correct and almost stopped watching this, especially since I had just watched and liked A Certain Magical Index. Well, I continued on watching and I'm very glad I did. It was much better than it's intial start suggested and I ended up liking this more than the aforementioned anime.

2 Astra Lost in Space

3 Black Lagoon

Black Lagoon

I'm not going to lie. I had high hopes for this anime from what I had heard from others and seen from the trailers. Why it's on this list is simply because it delivered well above and beyond those already high hopes. From a pure entertainment value, Black Lagoon gets an 'A' all the way!

4 Domestic Girlfriend

5 Emma: A Victorian Romance

Emma: A Victorian Romance

The greatest example of anime geared towards the female demographic that is SO good that I (a male) enjoyed it even more than my wife, who likes the series a whole lot too! In closing in on 20 years of anime enjoyment at the time of these written comments, it is the best positive surprise that I've received from an anime!

6 Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma

Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma

I had both optomistic and skeptical expectations for this show. After watching season one, it made me wonder why I was skeptical in the first place. It was just a fun, comical, stomach-appealing anime that is hard not to enjoy. The combination of Cooking and Ecchi is like nothing else in anime!

7 Harukana Receive

8 Hikaru no Go

Hikaru no Go

An incomplete watch for me (currently) but it was anime that I wanted to put on for my son to enjoy due to its non-(violent, lewd, ecchi, and fan service) nature. I ended up liking the show quite a bit myself, even more than him.

9 Kamisama Kiss

Kamisama Kiss

My wife had tried to get me to see this anime for months but I refused. Then one day I said let us watch it (mostly to get the constant annoyance about it to stop). I'm glad I made that decision because my lower expectations yielded high results for entertainment value. But even if I had high expectations going in, the show was very good with its mix of comedy, some action, and quality shoujo.

10 Martian Successor Nadesico

Martian Successor Nadesico

A series that I had high expectations for that fizzled due to a very bad start. That greatly lowered those expectations, which is why it made this list. About 1/4 into the series it made a complete turnaround and I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

11 Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club

First glance I thought this anime was going to have a numerous amount of Yaoi, which is not something I'm too keen on. Then again, I'm not the target audience for BL. Bottom line, Ouran High School Host Club does not have that much in it. In fact, it is just a very fun series with some excellent characters in it. The art and animation style only make it better than I anticipated as well.

12 Rail Wars!

Rail Wars!

I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I did. Yes, the quality of the animation is high. Yes, the Ecchi level is high as well. However, if you look past the abundant sexual fan service, there's some surprising substance to this anime that I did not foresee.

13 Sarazanmai

14 Sound! Euphonium

15 Special A

Special A

The stick figured-like art of the characters was an instant turn off. However, halfway into the series it got really good and I found myself binge watching it one night that led to nearly finishing it right then-and-there. It was quite the surprise indeed.

16 Yamada's First Time: B Gata H Kei

Yamada's First Time: B Gata H Kei

At the time I acquired this anime, I had never heard of it. I had experienced quite a few Laugh Out Loud moments by the time I had finished watching it. It's not the best anime you'll see, but it succeeds at what it tries to accomplish.

17 Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches

I had a positive outlook before watching this and I was overwhelmed on how much this anime touched my heart and how much I absolutely enjoyed it. Nearly the entire cast was a perfect group of characters to watch. I did not dislike a single one of them in the end. It is right near the top of most surprised.
