Dr. Stone

Jan 5, 2020

Another show with a pretty neat concept on paper but I just couldn't really enjoy how it was put together. I'll give the author credit for trying to showcase how amazing science is and how wonderful it's been in our evolution but I also kind of feel that a lot of the science used on the show happened either through luck or perfect coincidence.  I would have loved to see a young man, trying to survive in the wilderness by using his knowledge and learning more along the way to grow as a character but instead, we're dealing with a Naruto style war between two camps where all the... Vinland Saga

Dec 30, 2019

Vinland Saga is simply one of the best shows that anime has to offer. An intriguing story, characters with a lot of depts, complicated relationships, an unpredictable element that will keep you invested and something that it has over a lot of other shows fail to deliver on which is consistency.  Even though the characters are portrait to be larger than life and are admired like gods by the other characters in the show, they come with plenty of weaknesses. The choices they're forced to make will carry the weight of many nations. It'll still have its moments where things get extremely over the top... See full review

We Never Learn!

Dec 28, 2019

Simply put, one of the better romcoms due to its clever little buildups and the colorful cast. A lot of the skits are the cast misinterpreting words or situations but it's done in a way that it doesn't get old. The art style is still extremely clean and the show is just very consistent which is probably one of the shows' strongest elements. Even though I'm normally not a fan of the Power Ranger syndrome (where characters are given color to make them memorable due to just having no personality), I didn't mind it too much with this cast since the characters have a fair bit of personality and... Granblue Fantasy The Animation Season 2

Dec 28, 2019

Let's start by saying that Mappa did a pretty solid job in following up A-1 Pictures for the second season of Granblue Fantasy because that's no easy task. The lines may have gotten a bit sharper but the characters and its world as still incredibly colorful and gorgeous.  Some of the story arcs will be more impressive than others. some will be quite a bit darker in tone too but everything still feels like it could belong in one of the upcoming JRPG games. Travel from island to island, picking up quests and make friends along the way. The new villains are a lot more ruthless which balances... See full review

Fire Force

Dec 27, 2019

Another show I have mixed feelings about because it does a few things exceptionally well but then balances it out with things that I really dislike.  The show is presented to us in a very dark tone and it reminds me of Akiyuki Shinbo's work which I really appreciate. Giving firefighters RPG style classes and using demon exorcism to protect humanity is a really great concept that flows quite naturally.  I just wished the show would have followed a more Berserk style approach, the concept would have been perfect for it but then again, I'm just not a fan of loud obnoxious teenagers... Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!

Dec 27, 2019

A pretty forgettable show where we follow a group of cute girls, trying to make a living as adventurers. The main protagonist is ridiculously overpowered girl who doesn't want to be overpowered which then results in her teaching her friends to become stronger so she doesn't stand out like a sore thumb. And that's really all there is to this show. It results in every episode feeling like a filler. People do get killed, people do go missing, girls get married off... so it does have this weird dark element to it but the girls will always find a way to kind of mock the whole situation. I'm... ORESUKI: Are you the only one who loves me?

Dec 25, 2019

This was a very confusing watch. It's a show that's not trying to take itself seriously by mocking other romcoms but at the same time, it tries to set up these clever little plot twists that just aren't that clever at all.  The character design itself is pretty neat but the personalities themselves were just highly irritating and the animation quality is just average. The main protagonist thinks he's some kind of next-level genius but it couldn't be further from the truth... it was one of the most obnoxious parts of the show.  The show wasn't funny, it's also not relatable... Hi Score Girl II

Dec 22, 2019

This was a bit of an odd season. It felt that the game references that made the first season so great were pushed aside for a romance that was made way too complicated. A lot of that had to do with Oono just not being able to express herself properly, due to not being able to speak and the lack of facial expressions due to the style they went for. My biggest issue is when we're building up to an important moment in the story and we're not shown how things actually play out. It really took away from the storytelling experience. It just makes every event just not feel important, becoming an... See full review

Null & Peta

Dec 16, 2019

The first half of these short episodes are really lighthearted which is where we're introduced to 2 sisters who care a lot for each other. We get a glimpse of their tight relationship and how they're always together. The second half tries to make us aware that something isn't quite right and that's also when the show starts to lose its spark and the ending itself can feel a bit flat for some people. Null had her moments but Peta just felt kind of empty for most of the show.

Ani ni Tsukeru Kusuri wa Nai!

Dec 15, 2019

Came across Ani ni Tsukeru Kusuri Wa Nai! - Season 3 while trying to figure out what to watch during the fall of 2019. I was really impressed with the quality of the first episode and went back to check out the first season. The quality of this show is really great, it reminds me of the old Newgrounds Flash animations but a lot more polished. The characters are all pretty goofy but very likable. Short episodic stories about a good for nothing guy and his tomboy sister that mistook a Mixed Martial Arts class for an art class. The sister falls for one of the brother's friends while the brother tries... See full review

Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl

Nov 30, 2019

What can we say about the movie without spoiling it too much since the movie really gets straight into it? Well, we have Futaba trying to explain Quantum Physics again while experiencing more issues regarding the puberty syndrome that we were introduced to in Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. Compared to the series the movie has a much darker tone to it. It still has its playful moments but this emotional ride left me feeling both satisfied and rather drained at the end of it all.  If you feel you're not in the right mindset for it, I'd suggest waiting for the right... Sankarea

Nov 22, 2019

The concept of the show is excellent where a young girl, Rea, isn't happy with her dysfunctional family life and looks for a way to escape it. She ends up depending on a boy, Chihiro, who wasn't quite ready for all that responsibility but he tries his best to fulfill that role. I wished they would have gone with a more traditional zombie approach and that's mainly referring to how everybody just seems to be okay with Rea's situation.  The cast was enjoyable although it wasn't something we haven't seen before. I feel Ranko was the unsung hero of the show and that's mainly because Rea is... See full review

We Never Learn

Oct 20, 2019

I was expecting a typical harem show with a lot of boob jokes but the show does have its moments where it balances the jokes out with some witty build up and plenty of character. The girls all excel at a specific topic but fail horribly in other departments, so a young man is asked to help tutor them which results in rather awkward situations. I really enjoy the personalities which really adds to the awkward situations they're put in and the clean art style makes it all a pretty neat little package

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions: Heart Throb

Sep 30, 2019

With Shichimiya we're introduced to a new cast member who has a history with Yuuta and  I was expecting a trainwreck to happen but I should have known better. We did get on the train though, it still looked like we were going to get that trainwreck but I guess it just wouldn't have really fit with the vibe of the show. Had certain expectations and I guess I can only blame myself for the show not giving me what I was hoping for. I guess what I'm trying to say is... It's still a wholesome love story. Some of the events that happen are a little awkward, especially the episodes... See full review

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Sep 29, 2019

Demon Slayer is another show that did a lot of things right but it also had plenty of moments where I wanted to throw my monitor out the window. Let me explain...  The art style, the concept, the color used and the animations are some of the best in the business and based on that I'd give the show a 10 out of 10 but then we get to the character and demon designs... That's where it's a big hit or miss. The first half of the series is absolutely amazing and you're rooting for Tanjirou and Nezuko to succeed in finding a cure for Nezuko. But then, you get introduced to Zenitsu and it's like nails on a... See full review

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? II

Sep 28, 2019

Mixed feelings about the season but I still have tons of appreciation for it. I'm sure that a lot of people have come to the same conclusion, the pacing felt off, which was a real shame. The show is trying to stay as true as it can to the main light novel plot but it's cutting a lot of corners on the smaller interactions which you can't really do because all of it is just as important to the world-building and character development.

The light novel makes every moment feel important, every fight is as important as the build-up and the characters are given the room to interact with each other. A... See full review

Love, Chunibyo, & Other Delusions: Rikka Takanashi Version

Sep 26, 2019

The only interesting thing about this movie is the last few minutes where Yuuta offers to have a talk with Rikka's grandfather about her living situation but other than that, the movie is a really bad abbreviated version of the season. Nothing flows, scenes are cut really short and certain scenes are out of order.

Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san 2

Sep 24, 2019

In the first season, Takagi was teasing Nishikata because he was just fun to tease but the second season has a slightly different tone to it. It's a lot less playful than before and there is a lot more focus on getting Nishikata in situations where he would have to confess to Takagi that he's interested in her. It's still an enjoyable experience but they're not on the same wavelength as before. Nishikata mainly thinks about Takagi in a romantic way after she's put him in an awkward situation but he is just concerned on just teasing her and she's already thinking about their... Fruits Basket 1st Season

Sep 21, 2019

It really reminded me of those 80s soap operas that my mother used to watch, like The Bold and the Beautiful or Santa Barbara. I guess the Kardashians would be a modern version of those shows. A lot of eccentric characters, doing eccentric things and overdramatizing literally every interaction.  Nobody likes each other, everybody is trying to keep secrets and they're all trying to rely on the main character for support. Basically, most of the cast members are negative people who really enjoy negative things and you have 1 girl who is too good for all of them and she's already... See full review

Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!

Sep 21, 2019

I've watched a fair bit of anime and this is actually the kind of stuff I wish to see more of. Normal movies always have their limitations when it comes to transitions from reality and morph it into fantasy but you simply don't have those kinds of restrictions in anime. Kyoto Animation has a pretty great track record when it comes to characters with bubbling personalities and this show ain't no different. The art is gorgeous as always but Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions! actually carries quite an important message that everybody deals with situations in different ways. Try to have... See full review

How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?

Sep 20, 2019

I'm not really sure how I felt about this season of How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift?. The first few episodes started out as a way to get people interested in exercises, with some neat tips on how to get started at home which I think was a very clever idea and probably the best part of the show. However, the direction of the show seems to change a little a few episodes in and it feels like it just becomes another one of those standard goofy shows.  The exercises after the credits were always pretty neat. The art style is dope, the characters are interesting but the jokes themselves... See full review

The Disappearance of Nagato Yuki-chan

Sep 19, 2019

A parallel universe story arc where the once lifeless doll Yuki Nagato gets given the role of the main protagonist with more of a focus on romance than the supernatural events. I'll be honest, I wasn't much of a fan of Yuki's new personality and also the lack of supernatural events in the first half of the show doesn't really do this arc any favors. I do understand wanting to dive more into the parallel universe aspect of the series and trying to give Yuki's character some room to grow but I would have probably enjoyed it a lot more if she wasn't a stumbling geek who can't really... The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (2009)

Sep 18, 2019

I actually really enjoyed the second season but I'm well aware why the notorious 8 episodes aren't as well received by many people. Still, the first season and the movie flow a little better. The 8 episodes mentioned are basically the retelling of the same event but with its own flavoring. A lot of time and effort has gone into retelling the same story over and over again and the dedication is quite impressive.  There are a few episodes in the first season where we watch a movie recorded by Kyon and directed by Haruhi which feels like a complete shitshow. In the second season, we get... See full review

Granblue Fantasy The Animation

Aug 26, 2019

A show with plenty of flaws but there are 3 things that Granblue does that I can really appreciate.  It's simply a commercial for upcoming videogames, something we saw done a lot back in the '80s. Shows like The Transformers and He-man are a great example where the toys were made before the show was released. It doesn't hide it, especially the last episode where the show introduced us to the female version of our main protagonist. Grandblue is also just a JRPG game at its core and it doesn't overcomplicate things either. Those that have played tons of JRPG games will know what I mean. The... See full review

She accompanied by Van, the king of Fanelia and the pilot of Escaflowne, and catgirl Merle while trying to find her way back to her own world. Golden Boy has that feel of a 80's TV-show that we all grew up with where the main protagonist is a sly casanova kind of just does his thing but the girls can't withstand his charm. He reminds me of a young adult version of Bud Bundy from Married with Children. Really wish there were more episodes and there is a really nice charm to the show even though it didn't age well in regards to its theme.

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? Movie: Arrow of the Orion

The tricky Hermes organised a competition during a festival where the person who pulls a sword from a block of crystals wins the blessings from a goddess along with a trip around the world. Bell wins the competition and gets introduced to the mysterious goddess Artemis but that's also where all the fun and games stop. The animations and the cast are amazing as always but I do feel that the movie struggles to show how serious the situation is that our heroes find themselves in.
