The Case Study of Vanitas: Part II

Jun 3, 2022

I watched the second part of this series directly after the first, so a lot of the feelings I had initially were carried over.

I felt the first half of this one did not fit with the initial plot establised in the first part/season. It was interesting, yes, but felt too long and disconnected, ignoring a lot of what was established in the first season. It was also broken up with many flash back episodes of characters that didn't necesarily add to the plot especially when they are repeated in other episodes. The second half fit much better and was more vital to the character's development and... See full review

The Case Study of Vanitas

Jun 3, 2022

My initial reasons for watching this series include: the time period (late 1800's/early 1900's ? ) the animations (it's bright and dark and very very pretty to watch) and the percieved BL hints (which were very, very strong.) I think they all hit fairly well, save for the BL tension which helped throw a lot of the things in the story off kilter for me. This first season was fun, full of very intersting ideas and subjects that sadly felt teased but not pushed far enough. The flirtatious tension between our two main characters, Vanitas and Noe, put the wrong emotional dressing on the story that... See full review

Coffee Samurai

Aug 8, 2021

Coffee Samurai is an interesting Korean short that feels like a student animation or independent project. It feels very Korean in it's tone (if you've read a lot of Korean comics you'll understand.) It's quirky and different and, I will admit, a bit charming. Some elements don't make a lot of sense (beyond the fact that the main character is a vending machine) and the audio quality is horrendous. Fighting scenes in particular where ear-piercingly bad. There is a lot you'll want to unpack but you aren't really given the tools to do so. But it was enjoyable and I would have liked seeing the story stretched... See full review

Bastard!!

Jun 11, 2019

Bastard!! is one of those guilty pleasures that you think is a lot better than it actually is. It's so full of weirdness and eye-rolling situations that you put off watching it a second time till all you remember is that it was fun to watch.

The story is fairly simple. A group of uber-powerful magicians wish to take over the world to make it "a better place" and only one man can stop them. The twist is that the main in question is more than an anti-hero, he's a bastard with a naughty streak and penchant for dieing. Only one thing keeps him on track (while knocking some sense into...
