Hozuki's Coolheadedness

Dec 24, 2017

Do you like crazy, over the top humour and Japanese mythology? If yes, then this is the perfect anime for you. No, seriously, don't even bother reading the rest of this and just get watching. If you prefer your humour less sadistic and insane, then seriously why are you even considering an anime with so many tags relating to it? If, however, you need a little more persuading, then you've come to the right place. There's a great review right above this one, go read it, it's... ok, ok, just kidding. I feel like I should probably stop waffling and actually get on with the review.  Hozuki no Reitetsu... See full review

Natsume's Book of Friends

Dec 8, 2017

And I present to you... one of the most chill anime you will ever find. Bittersweet and tearjerking to the extreme, this is an absolute must watch for slice of life fans.  Natsume is a very lonely child who can see youkai, and is completely outcast because of it. An orphan, he's been passed around from family to family, until he finally arrives at the Fujuwara household, where everything finally seems to get better for him. He discovers his grandmother could also see youkai, and began collecting their names in her 'Book of Friends', a book that many youkai now want. Thanks to the Book of Friends... See full review

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

Dec 8, 2017

This is seriously cute. As far as slice of lifes go, this is definitely up there for me as one of the best. The characters are all great, and the story maintains just the right level of drama and adorable moments.  The story focuses around Sorata, a student at an arts school who loves cats. After picking one up off the street, he is banished from his school dorm to a run down building where they send all the 'problem children'. And, being an art school, they really are eccentric. One is an extremely hyperactive animator who singlehandedly animated an entire anime series, another who spends his entire... See full review

Strike the Blood

Nov 24, 2017

Imagine the most sterotypical harem series you can think of. Now make the main character a vampire, and add a few other random magical creatures in randomly. Congratulations! You have just imagined Strike the Blood.  Strike the Blood really doesn't break any kinds of barriers, or even try to be any more than a typical fantasy themed harem, which in turn means it actually does a pretty good job of being one. The main character is in essence the chosen one - a guy who's gained the powers of an extremely strong vampire. A sword shaman, Yukina, is assigned to keep an eye on him, and together they fight a... Love and Lies

Sep 18, 2017

Japan's birth rates are on the decline (because underpopulation seems like a problem we're likely to have in the near future), so in order to increase it, instead of actively encouraging large families and increasing the amount of child support available like a normal government would, they set up an elaborate marriage matching scheme to partner everyone with their ideal match. I mean, the amount of work they put into it is very impressive. Totally overkill, but still impressive.  Enter boring harem mc #2348, who's only bit of personality serves to make him even more boring (he likes burial mounds. Of... See full review

The Twelve Kingdoms

Jun 18, 2017

I cannot describe Twelve Kingdoms as anything but an epic fantasy. It really does tick off all the boxes - lots of awesome new creatures, an incredibly detailed and amazing world that really cannot be done justice in the short time frame it has and a ridiculously slow start. Honestly, I will warn you now, the first few episodes will bore you out of your mind. If you say they didn't you are either lying or have a very different definition of what interesting is. After that, however, the story really picks up.  The world of Twelve Kingdoms is incredibly vivid and interesting. A little illogical when you... See full review

Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid

Apr 5, 2017

This was honestly so much more adorable than I was expecting. The characters were great, the animation incredible and the whole thing was really sweet. Office worker Kobayashi saves a dragon's life, and the next day she shows up and says she wants to be her maid! The story shows their life as they slowly get used to living together, and the dragon gets used to the human world. It's pretty much episodic, although the story still feels like it has really progressed by the end of it. The characters in Kobayashi-san are great, and get quite a bit of development along the way. Kobayashi is seeminly pretty... See full review

Kirara

Mar 6, 2017

When Kirara dies on the way to her wedding, she is, for whatever reason, allowed to go back in time and see her fiancee before she started dating him. Now, if there's anything I've learnt from watching too much sci-fi, this is not generally a good idea, but given Kirara is a complete idiot, it proabably doesn't matter. The characters in Kirara all annoyed me quite a lot, especially ghost Kirara. She is a certified idiot. I'm not really sure how it happened, because her younger self actually seems kind of smart, but somewhere along the line she got so stupid she thought texting and driving on the way... Glassy Ocean

Mar 6, 2017

This is a very surreal anime about people's who's time is seemingly much faster than normal people's. Oh, and to them, it's as if the ocean is made of glass (hence the name). The main plot (if you can call it that), is that a whale is jumping, and so many people come to watch the spectacle. There are also quite a few other parts to the story, like the characters reminicing about their strange pasts. The whole thing feels very odd. The animation definitley adds to the surrealism. The ocean has quite an interesting style especially. It definitley works well with the story, and is generally quite a nice... See full review

Mahou Tsukai Nara Miso wo Kue!

Mar 5, 2017

Ummm, what? So, I assume you've read the synopsis? Good, because that's about as much detail as you're going to get about this story. I'm not even sure they were trying to make the story clear, if it even had one in the first place. The first bit starts off pretty promisingly actually - some interesting magic, cool explosions and what seem to be characters with some potential. And then they just give up and throw some fanservice at you. They don't even try and work it into a story, they just throw what looks like fan art at you, occasionally mixed in with some animated stuff that may or may not bare any... See full review

Sushi Police

Mar 5, 2017

This was... weirdly ok. Not great, but given it's called Sushi Police I was expecting a lot worse. So the story, as you would expect, is absolutely ridiculous. The Sushi Police literally go around stopping people from making weird sushi. Only people actually start to object! And then it starts developing into a fairly deep story! It's weird... Don't get me wrong, I'm glad they went that way, but it was still very weird. Not at all what I was expecting. And the characters as well - they get development! They're still pretty bland characters, and honestly I don't really remember anything about them, but... See full review

Ontama!

Mar 5, 2017

This is a super adorable series, and the ending is brilliant. This is definitley one you have to watch all the way through to fully appreciate, which given it's only 75 minutes in total shouldn't be too much of a stretch. The story itself isn't too original, but I still liked it. It's certainly very well executed, and the great characters certainly help it feel pretty new. The main character, Ichigo, is actually quite three dimensional character. To me, she felt more like an actual child rather than a character, which was great. The biological father is a shy and frankly pretty adorable character, as is... See full review

After School in the Teacher's Lounge

Mar 5, 2017

Oh dear god, this was terrible. Bland characters, a story that's all over the place, and crappy animation - Houkago no Shokuinshitsu is just a mess. So, the story is two male teachers falling in love. Sounds ok, and it probably would be, if the story didn't keep jumping around so much. Most of the scenes aren't properly linked, to the point where you think they may have accidently left out parts of the anime. In fact, had I not been so sure there were only two episodes, I would have sworn there was at least one other episode between the first and second, that's how little they link everything... Honobono Log

Mar 5, 2017

Honobono Log is very cute, but that's kind of it really. Each new 2 minute episode tells a different story, which is both its strength and weakness. On the one hand, it means that the stories individually are done very well, you don't get very bored, and if you don't like a set of characters, it doesn't matter, as they'll be gone by the next episode. On the other hand, you can't really get attached to any of the characters, and your favourite characters will be gone by the next episode. I know there were a couple of stories I'd have liked to see a bit more of. The animation is very minimalistic as well... See full review

Utopa

Mar 3, 2017

Utopa is one those things that sets itself up with an incredibly interesting premise, only to throw it out of the window and focus on a few fairly uninteresting characters and their stupid story around a world that looks far more interesting. So instead of focusing on what they should have been focusing on (I'm not bitter about this at all...), Utopa focuses on three kids who found a seed in their home, and decide to come to the surface to find out what it is. I would question why, but given they're like 7 I'm not that surprised. The story doesn't even then follow that, and instead goes for something... See full review

Matoi the Sacred Slayer

Dec 31, 2016

I don't really know what to say about Matoi the Sacred Slayer other than I enjoyed it way more than I should have. It really wasn't that spectacular of an anime, but there were little moments added that made it a great watch. The story itself was pretty generic. Girl discovers she has hidden powers, although she doesn't want them. She tries to get rid of them, but gives up and just uses them anyway. Nothing particularly special there. I really loved the characters in this series though. While none of them were particularly special, I felt quite a strong connection to them all, and grew to care about them... See full review

Kiitaro's youkai picture diary

Dec 31, 2016

This was super adorable! Not exactly great, but a good way to kill a bit of time. Obviously, with the short episodes, there isn't really that much time to develop the characters. They are two dimensional, and frankly quite unoriginal, but I still liked the majority of them. They were fun to watch at the very least. The plot is not exactly the most original either - it's basically just about a kid who moves into a house of youkai. It's pretty cute, but nothing to get excited about. Kiitaro's Youkai Picture Diary is hardly an original anime, but if you feel like watching something cute for a little... See full review

The Great Passage

Dec 23, 2016

This was unexpectedly amazing. Honestly, the first thing I thought when I read the synopsis was how boring and stupid it sounded. But since I had to watch it for ALG, I started it anyway. And I'm so glad I did. While the story itself is pretty important, it's certainly not the main focus of Fune wo Amu. It's about the characters themselves. You gradually grow to love them all, even the side characters. The main character, Majime, is an super shy nerd with a serious passion for words. There's also his complete opposite, Nishioka, who is super confident and very friendly, although I have no idea why he was... See full review

Cheating Craft

Dec 23, 2016

-_- What the hell was this? So Cheating Craft starts off pretty randomly. It is essentially battles in the form of exams. The hilarity is very hit and miss, although I guess it's interesting in how unique a concept it is (I certainly haven't seen anything quite like it). About half way through it decides to include some actual plot development, but that lasts all of 2 episodes before it's right back where it started. Only by that point you're pretty bored of the same plot over and over. Characterwise, this is nothing special. All the characters are unremarkable and I felt pretty indifferent about most of... Winter Sonata

Dec 22, 2016

Damn, talk about an excessive amount of drama. I didn’t even know that much could go wrong in 26 episodes. So first of all, a warning. This is based on a live action drama, which had me seriously confused the first time I tried to look for it. Anyway, Winter Sonata tells the story of two high schoolers who fall in love, and their ridiculously complicated love story. Hindered by pretty much every drama cliché you can think of, they struggle to find a way to be together. I will admit, it was pretty sweet, but there is a limit to how much bullshit can happen without it feeling a little too... See full review

The Morose Mononokean

Dec 22, 2016

This was a really cute series. Sure, it wasn’t the most original thing, there are certainly plenty of series out there with a similar plot, but that didn’t make it any less enjoyable. The story involves Hanae, who’s just moved into high school becoming able to see youkai when a fluffy white one begins possessing him. The longer it stays with him, the weaker he becomes, until he comes into contact with an exorcist, Haruitsuki. He agrees to exorcise the youkai, but in return, Hanae must work for him to help exorcise youkai. I did warn you that it’s not the original plot. The... See full review

Ouran High School Host Club

Nov 27, 2016

Well, I was really not expecting to enjoy this as much as I did. I mean, have you read the synopsis? (If you haven't, I highly reccomend you do. It's usually the sensible thing to do before reading any reviews) It hardly seems like it would be good. And yet here I am giving it a 9/10. Obviously it did something right. Story-wise, I'm sure you already know the basic plot (If not, I refer back to my previous suggestion) To be honest, other than that, there is not a huge amount plot wise. There's certainly bits here and there but the main focus is on the characters and their relationships. All of... See full review

Rewrite

Sep 24, 2016

Well that was a bit of a mess. Sure, the parts of the mess were alright, but looking back I really don't understand how the story progressesed. It just jumped from one thing to the next and hoped you could keep up.  Initially, the story is about a high school boy who keeps getting attacked by monsters. And then, it's about an occult club. And then... I don't want to spoil too much but it pretty much changes the plot line every few episodes. So much so you'll forget what was actually happening before. Individually the parts are told pretty well, but how they joined the stories together just meant none... See full review

Re:ZERO: Starting Life in Another World

Sep 19, 2016

This anime has been seriously hyped recently, and with good reason. ReZero is one of the most unexpectedly amazing series that I've ever seen. The story starts with Subaru being transported into a fantasy world from our own world. As he's trying to get used to the world, he discovers he has the ability to 'return by death', essentially meaning if he dies he goes back into the past, to the point where he can fix what happened. At first he thinks it's great - he can save everyone by gaining knowledge about the enemy he's fighting. This seems like a fairly simple plot, and to be fair it is, but how it is told... First Love Monster

I really didn't want to have to relive this anime, but this is for the sake of making sure more people don't make the mistake of watching First Love Monster. Do you like anime involving high schoolers going out with 10 year olds, pedophiles, perverts, attempted rapists, stalkers and sister complexes? Yeah, me neither. Come and watch First Love Monster and you'll get all of them! Oh, and don't forget the fact that for some inexplicable reason all of the 10 year olds look 18+. Katanagatari

Sep 11, 2016

At first I didn't really think much of Katanagatari. It seemed like a fairly standard series, with an odd art style and weird episode lengths (oh yeah, as a heads up, the episodes are 50 minutes each). However, without me really noticing, the characters and story began to grow on me, quite significantly. The story starts with Shichika, a boy(?) who grew up isolated from society due to his father being exiled, meeting Togame. She is on a quest to find the 12 deviant blades made by a master swordsmith long ago. As the inheritor of a powerful sword style, he is the perfect person to accompany her on her... See full review

5 Centimeters per Second

Aug 17, 2016

Surprisingly enough, I thought this was a pretty overrated movie. I mean, sure, it's great if you like hour long monologues, but they're really not my thing. The story itself was a pretty average love story - which means it bored me out of my mind. Romance is not one of my favourite genres, but occasionally I find one that I enjoy. This... was not one of them. It's told by three different narrators, none of whom I cared about at all, and it seemed to me a pretty common story - one I've definitley heard a few times before. That's fine if it's told well, but again, listening to a huge monologue is not my... See full review

Romeo x Juliet

Aug 11, 2016

Meh, the original was better.  I mean seriously, what was this anime? An action? A romance? A story about a revolution? A fantasy (no, it was not. Having a few flying horses does not make for a fantasy)? It was as if the series couldn't make its mind up, and so just changed its pace completely every few episodes. Result: a mess, made out of parts that individually could have been very good.

Jun 18, 2016

Well this anime came out of nowhere. My past experiences with long running shounen series all left me moderately entertained but a bit bored at the repetativeness, and I expected this series to be no different. But I quickly fell in love with this series. The plot is nothing special. There are quite a few stereotypical story lines, but at the same time I felt like there was something else in them that other shonen series lack. The plot wasn't afraid to frequently touch on some of the darker aspects that would really come with being in a shounen anime, which I thought gave it a little something extra. While... Death Note

May 14, 2016

Well, this was...underwhelming. For an anime that is as hyped up as Death Note is, I was expecting to be a bit more interested. Granted, it's still a good anime, just not necessarily as good as everyone says it is. If you don't already know the storyline by now, then the title does a good job of explaining it. It's about a notebook of death. I love it when the title of a series tells you what the series is about. So, when Ryuk (a shinigami, obviously) "acciddently" drops his death note in the human world, your average, hyperintellegant high schooler who's father just so happens to be an important...
