Sailor Moon

Mar 30, 2012

Story: The story of Sailor Moon is one practically everyone knows. Its simple, its been over-used and its what some might call boring. But suprisingly enough, when watching it, its actually pretty interesting.

Sailor Moon has many different aspects to its storyline- the fighting the monsters, the romance and school life, theres something for everyone here. Of course, you could tell what was going to happen almost EVERY time, but it was entertaining noetheless. The whole romance aspect to this series of Sailor Moon was probably the best from the first 3 series'. Sadly, a lot of fillers were also used in this show. This made it very annoyingly slow-paced, but if you could manage to get through the fillers then you were alright. Plus, you could skip some episodes and not lose the storyline.

The ending of this anime was very good though- it became maturer as all the Sailor Senshi had, for a childrens cartoon, pretty gritty death scenes. Each one died one by one with different bad guys. By the end Sailor Moon was by herself, I found this very sweet and sad, vastly improving my score for this show. It proved Sailor Moon was flully capable of being for mature viewers as well, and that its capable of setting up a suprising storyline.

Animation: For the nineties it was great. For now, I have to say I don't really like looking at it. The small facial features in comparison with the ENORMOUS eyes just annoyed me. Images were burry and scratchy, the colour was dark at points and pretty dismal. But grading animation as an inbetween I give animation a seven.

Sound: Very many girly tunes are used, these didn't bother me tht much. What did was Usagi's little sing-song saying what she uttered EVERY episode. These to me wasted time and was pretty pointless.

Characters: Sailor Mercury, Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus I felt had little to no personality at all. I really didn't like them. Thankfully Mars and Sailor Moon were there to save it, as well as a very rich group of minor characters like Darien and the bad guys. These characters with smaller roles just about managed to up this rating to a seven. But in terms of the protagonists, hardly any of them had any likeability factor in this series.

Overall: It has a lot of faults (some of which improve as series' go on) but nonetheless Sailor Moon is a must-watch for Mahou-shoujo fans and it has lots of aspects to it, at least one of which you are sure to enjoy.

7/10 story
7.5/10 animation
7/10 sound
7/10 characters
7/10 overall

I think what made this series sooo good was that it was possibly the first of its kind to be shown on TV! And a great starting series too. I always thought the dub was pretty bad, since I watched it on TV as a child, then watched it on the internet (in subs) as a teen. The manga started being released in the Uk last year and it cuts out a load of filler, plus paints the characters better than the series did.

As for the show itself though...unforgettable! Everyone should watch at least a bit of it in their lifetime! Thanks for reviewing this :)
