Banana Fish

Dec 22, 2020

I watched this as part of Secret Santa 2020, but it's been on my want-to-watch list for a while The plot follows Ash Lynx, a runaway teenager, turned child prostitute, and then later a gang boss. He gets himself entangled with a conspiracy while trying to find out the truth of what happened to his brother. Just as he's about to give up his life for revenge, he meets Eiji, a Japanese visiting the US, and everything changes. Let me start off by saying I'm usually not a huge fan of mafia/conspiracy stories, but this one was saved by the characters. Their stories are incredibly complex, and while they all... The God of High School

Sep 20, 2020

After the success of the Tower of God, I was really hyped about The God of High School. Both series were Crunchyroll Originals and based on highly successful webtoons. Minor spoilers ahead  However, The God of High School disappointed me a little. The first episode just throws you in with minimal explanations, which is fine, there's still time to improve, right? Well, that's where you'd be wrong.  It took me nearly 10 episodes to realize what this series was lacking - it's not the plot, it's not the characters, it's not the fights. The issue with it is that it simply doesn't dedicate ANY time... See full review

Darwin's Game

Mar 9, 2020

I expected this anime to be quite similar to King's Game from a few seasons ago. It is SO MUCH better.  Plot follows a highschooler Kaname Sudo, who accidentally gets dragged into a deadly game with amazing rewards. As he gets to know the rules he meets other players - most important of whom is Shuka.  This anime offers nothing original, it's your typical high stakes game anime with some battle royale sprinkled in. Characters are nothing special either, some common tropes are present (Shuka being a little yandere, newbie being a... See full review

Tokyo Godfathers

Dec 12, 2019

I was recommended this anime by my Secret Santa as part of AP Secret Santa 2019 This isn't something I'd usually watch on my own - so thank you very much for recommending it!  Story follows three homeless people, who in a way form a small family and who happen to find an abandoned baby. They take it upon themselves to find the baby's parents and their adventure begins. This movie has everything: feels, adventure, comedy, a little bit of social commentary and is very entertaining. Relationships between the main characters are great, they are bound by friendship and they treat each other as family... See full review

Assassins Pride

Dec 6, 2019

Minor spoilers ahead Let me start by saying that I haven't seen the original material for this - I fully believe it is much better than this adaptation.  Kufa, who is supposedly an assassin, gets hired as a mentor for a girl named Melida. Melida comes from a rich family and is attending a fancy (private?) school where she's training to become a fighter. She is a good student, BUT she has no mana - as in she can't use magic. Her family wants to get rid of her and that's where Kufa comes in. I started watching this thinking it'll be fairly okayish, entertaining seasonal anime but with some twists and... See full review

7 Seeds

Sep 19, 2019

I had very high expectations for this anime and I was really disappointed with how it turned out.  Story premise sounds great, I love this type of series (post-apocalyptic, survival, Lord of the Flies style) and while manga is probably pretty great this adaptation was just eh.  Animation was done by Gonzo and it wasn't that amazing. My main issues were that the lightning was pretty weird in some scenes (really bright, blurry) and that some highly disturbing scenes were made ridiculous with how they were animated. Voice acting was okay, OST wasn't memorable.  Characters were pretty... See full review

Fairy Tail: Final Season

Sep 19, 2019

Final season of Fairy Tail delivers a satisfying conclusion to the series. Story picks up where it left off - we find out who E.N.D. is, Fairy Tail has been disbanded but Lucy and Natsu are trying to bring the crew back together. First arc is a short one - we find out what Gray and Juvia have been up to, main characters get to show off their improved powers and there are some heartfelt reunions. Then, we get introduced to the "main bad guy" - Spriggan, emperor of the neighbouring empire who is about to invade Fiore. He has a group of 12 most powerful wizards with him and of course, Fairy... Zenonzard The Animation Episode 0

Sep 19, 2019

This episode was available on YouTube as part of a promotion for the upcoming series. I didn't expect much and I must say I didn't get much at all. Story is your typical, many times recycled card game with semi-decent characters but not much else. This episode felt very rushed, chopped up in places (I still don't see how the first scene ties in with highschoolers battling alongside AI). They don't explain why AIs are wandering around, you don't find out what the purpose or the rules of this game are. All you get is a main character with a dark secret (which turns out not to be so dark and is delivered in... See full review

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Jun 19, 2019

Let me start off by saying that I usually don't watch this genre. However, I've thoroughly enjoyed this and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something funny, lighthearted and cute. In terms of story this anime doesn't have much to offer. A girl and a boy like each other, neither wants to admit it but keeps trying to get the other party to do that, which of course, rarely gets them anywhere. Throw in some comic relief characters and a few stories and you'll get Love is War. Animation was pretty consistent and the anime looks great. The ending sequence in the third episode (infamous Chika dance)... See full review

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion I - Initiation

Jun 19, 2019

Code Geass was one of the first serious anime I've watched, and naturally I wanted to refresh my memory before the new movie comes out, so this recap (retelling?) seemed like a good option. Let me start off by saying that while this is a good telling of the story, it naturally feels a little rushed because the story was originally spread throughout half of the season. If you want to watch Code Geass for the first time, I definitely recommend the original series, because you'll have a better overview of the story. Explanation at the beginning is also a nice touch. And the story is as good as I remember... See full review

Mirai

Feb 15, 2019

Kun is having a hard time adapting to the arrival of his little sister and is often causing trouble for his parents by throwing tantrums. One day he meets a girl named Mirai, who happens to be his little sister who came to visit him from the future... This movie was a wonderful portrayal of a childhood, filled with sibling rivalry and love, power of imagination and a nice display of challenges being a working parent comes with. I found the title and synopsis to be a bit misleading - while Mirai is the reason these events are unfolding, her older brother is the star of the show and the story follows him... See full review

ERASED

Dec 24, 2018

This anime sucks you right in, it's very easy to binge-watch (fitting, seeing it's on Netflix) and it's a good way to waste 8ish hours of your life. Story: I was skeptical about time travel aspect at first, which is why I avoided watching this for years. Seeing Satoru's childhood was quite interesting, the story is heartwarming and the only issue with the story was the ending. It seemed so out of place, like something you would see in an OVA that comes out years after the show finished airing. I would like to point out that the story was a bit predictable, but I wouldn't say it's a... Ulysses: Jeanne d'Arc and the Alchemist Knight

Dec 23, 2018

Disclaimer: I'm watching this because it was my ALG pick (and it's why you should never do ALG) Story: A take on Jean of Arc story (legend?) with alchemy, fairies and a harem. Yes, a harem.  When I first read the synopsis I thought "oh it doesn't sound that bad" and first half of the season was watchable. Nothing too spectacular, some fan service, potential incest, potential pedophile but hey it's anime. Complete with  a perverted summary of the following episode (which usually didn't go well with the tone of the actual episode) and (surprisingly useful) French lessons. Animation and... Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Dec 5, 2018

Disclaimer: Magical girls just aren't something I can get into Story: Madoka is a teenage girl who learns about the existence of magical girls, who, in exchange for having a wish granted, agreed to fight witches - terrible creatures that trap weak humans and hurt/kill them. Then she spends half of the season deciding if she wants to become one herself. The story itself is fairly sweet - you have your cute girls, crushes, friendships, futuristic setting, sacrifices and huge amounts of love. First five episodes were pretty boring to me, second half of the season picks up the pace and the ending is fairly... See full review

Noragami

Dec 5, 2018

Story: Yato is a failed God - he has no shrine, no followers and his Divine Instrument just quit, leaving him defenseless in fighting the Ayakashi - evil spirits of sorts. One day he meets a girl who ends up changing his life... Let me start off by saying that I've seen this anime around, but the premise didn't seem that original or interesting, so I always avoided watching it. However, first episode is quite interesting and sucks you right in, especially if you're a sucker for shounen. Season itself has minor plot twists and seems to serve like an introduction, a lot of questions are left unanswered... King's Game

Dec 22, 2017

Imagine a show with elements of Another, Mirai Nikki, Higurashi and your favorite harem anime. Now imagine if those 4 had a love child - that's what King's Game plot summary sounds like when you read it. But when you actually get around to watching it IT'S SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. A class is chosen to participate in a deadly game called King's Game, in which they have to do certain tasks or they die. Sounds creepy? Well it isn't really, cause the King's tasks are basically what you'd expect from a 12 year old boy. One of the students in the class, Nobuaki, is a transfer student from another... See full review
