The funniest Animes

1 Daily Lives of High School Boys

Daily Lives of High School Boys

This is sort of the male version of Minami-ke with a bit more consistency and more solid humor. It bridges to a larger cast of characters and even has a fair number of female characters despite being primarily set in a boys school. One slight drawback are the number of characters pushed to the background that either don’t get names or don’t have their eyes ever shown. The Seinfeld like comedy plot about nothing/everyday lives however is consistently fun and funny frequently centering on ridiculous side chat about common topics, games, or nonsensical hypothesis.

2 Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu

If this were not an anime, I would quantify it as an ingenious sitcom worthy of some of the best.  The straight man, absent minded ineptness of Sousuke constrasts so well and sharply with Kaname's more mature, wiser, and real world competency that Sousuke utterly lacks that their mere appearence can make you at least crack a smile just imagining what clumsy or foolish trouble they will get into next.  Their timing and natural compability is reminscient of the great classic comedy teams of old.  Sousuke is slow to learn and understand how to navigate the real world every day lifestyle of normal living while Kaname might seem out of place on the battlefield, her lack of experience handling it makes Sousuke look like a child on his first day of school while she takes on high school level at least.  The premise is pretty much the same throughout but the series never seems to fail to keep that dynamic fresh and humorous.

3 Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle

Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle

The slapstick comedy fueled by the princess' ocd & lack of common sense throws her would be kidnappers into constant frustration and stress.

4 Working!!

Working!!

Working is one of the first and rare few anime I like that centers mostly on ordinary life with nothing global, mecha, monster, magical, superpower or anything else far too fanciful to fit into your real lives.  This one makes the ordinary seem extraordinary and does so in a fanciful comedic outtake on mundane average life in a working environment.  The show centers on unique contrasting personalities perhaps more than any other anime I ever saw and builds upon that to base the humor on.  There are a few flaws but not enough to place the honorable appreciation of a top knotch quality comedy like this is.

5 Bungo Stray Dogs

Bungo Stray Dogs

Dazai is a natural comedian.  He may or may not always be the artist responsible for all the good jokes or humor bits but he is often the prime instigator of all comedic acts seen in the show either directly or indirectly almost as if he were directing the lives of everyone around him through some mysterious power into a life like comedy show.  Doppo is usually drafted as Dazai's straight man to Dazai comedic superstar prowess.  Together they quite often pull of some of the best humor seen in anime.  This show can't rank at the top because it is mostly a drama/action/magic/violence show but in between fights there is plenty of humor.  The humor is strong and good enough to earn it a high rank even thoug it is not a comedy anime primarily.

6 Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren't They?

Problem Children Are Coming From Another World, Aren't They?

The timing of the three main characters are so precise and well done you might be convinced that they have worked as a comedy trio for over a decade.  They are soo good as a comedy trio that it is almost as if they can read each other's minds when they do their jokes.  The back and forth banter they often dish out in support of one anothers' humorous outbursts comes off naturally yet they are so comical you could swear only the best writers in comedy must be writing their lines.  Many of their jokes often come from picking on Black Rabbit who is almost like their babysitter/mother character constantly worrying about them and keeping them in line yet whom gives them the greatest pleasure in teasing.  There are other elements that make the show a good comedy but their uncanny and unmatched comedic teamwork is what makes the show comedy gold.

7 KonoSuba – God's blessing on this wonderful world!

KonoSuba – God's blessing on this wonderful world!

This series is all about spoofing other fantasy, new world, and/or magic themed anime in about as ridiculous a fashion possible.  Like perhaps the original Ghostbusters between parts 1 and 2, instead of everything working out for the heroes of the story, they tend to fail dramatically.  Nothing ever seems to go right, although they usually resolve the crisis anyway.  Aqua looks quite cute and competent but she is more of a burden than a boon as her antics often widen the problems or creates new ones.  Darkness is a glutton for punishment, literally and actually seeks out terrible situations for her own sake.  Megumi is literally a one trick pony, and is useless for anything else but at the same time refuses to improve on that or widen her versitility.  Oddly the weakest one in the group is the most competent and useful.  Some of their encounters with villains or bullies turn out to be hilarious as how they deal with them is like a joke, such as using Verdia's head as a soccer ball.

8 Detective Conan

Detective Conan

If this were a live action series it would probably be a good situation comedy.  The arguments between Detective Moore (Mouri in Japanese) and Conan are alone a great source of laughter.  Conan though is not only ostensibly a 17 year old investigative genius but acts more mature than his age and after his transformation that contrast is all the more sharper in his new form and among his aquired entourage.  Imagine how frustrating it is not to be taken seriously despite being at or near adult age so much that he has to essentially use Moore as a puppet to make his cases.

9 Seitokai Yakuindomo

Seitokai Yakuindomo

Seitokai gives new meaning to the concept of adult humor.  Most of the jokes center around adult or sexual situations so they are not for all ages, but they are usually quite amusing.  Takatoshi is usually at the center of harassment and humor brought on by Aria and Shino.  Most of Suzu's jokes by or toward her focus on her short stature.  The sheer generic role reversal that Takatoshi is essentially bullied and harassed by two girls is in itself rather funny.  In a strange twist, Shino is similar to Ayame Kajou from Shimoneta as she spends as much time as possible just saying dirty words to the main male character.  The jokes generally come quickly so if you blink you may miss one or two.  Despite it's clearly adult nature, the wit and ironic situation from the general stereotype sort of situations makes for great fast paced humor that won't leave you unsatisfied.

10 My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU

Hiki often brings the torment upon himself.  He is forced to enter a club run by Yukino who tries to help others but her ideas and plans rarely seem to work and ironically she has to rely on Hiki's brilliant but observant mind to solve them.  Hiki understands social circles better than nearly anyone but for one reason or another he does not seem to want to join or grasp the nature of why social circles exist.  Yet his keen observations give him access to important information about how they work and how solutions to problems within them might be resolved. Yui wants to be in such circles and her and others somehow begin to pick up on how generous and helpful Hiki actually is.  His internal narration that viewers here making comical comments about himself and the world he lives in are often nearly as humorous as the events outside his mind. Somehow his bungling in the world creates a constant source of humor aided of course by Yukino and Yui and sometimes other new friends.

11 GATE

GATE

At it's heart, Gate is a round about spoof of all fantasy anime in general.  It's slightly over the top heavy biased lean on Japan and it's military over all else in the world might be harder to stomach though, but the humor found within and the interesting aspects of Itami's character you uncover as the show progresses serve to help overlook that extreme over the top heavy bias.  Ironically perhaps, the best and most interesting character in the show is not even Itami but one of those characters he finds, Rory Mercury.  Rory is like a force of will or a overwhelming force of nature hitting the show like a hurricane hitting an unprotected beach.  She's also one of the best sources of humor as many of her antics involve getting on Itami's nerves or shocking the others in the squad with her wisdom, wit, or sometimes abrasively direct nature, such as how she insists on sitting on Itami's lap to ride in his vehicle.

Though there is also a elf who is older than Itami but has serious daddy issues, a wizard who looks and is about 14, a dark elf with some baggage of her own and a seriously over the top barbie like physique, the sarge who has years of experience but never took up higher rank himself, a medic, a fellow otaku, a woman who often drives when the otaku doesn't, and the rest of Itami's squad that he gets doing what he thought was just normal behavior which got him promoted.  Itami's wish to avoid the spot light and focus on his otaku hobbies yet his actions garner him more attention than he wants and accolades and promotions meaning he might never make it to another anime event.

12 SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist

SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist

Think something along the lines of 1984 meets the town where footloose takes place but way more extreme than either.  Then you might about have the setting for Shimoneta.  Everything of adult or sexual nature is horribly oppressed to the point that few even know what sex is.  Quakers anyone?  Of course if you do that your chances to ever reproduce and keep society going kind of goes way down.  Or you might repess citizens and the youth so much the rebel and/or burst out of the seems overly sexually aggressive and charged.  Well that's the formula for creating a person like Ayame Kajou.  Tanukichi, the main male character, wants anything but perversion yet Ayame forces him to help her, during one of their bouts he accidentally kisses Anna, who proves to have an even more twisted perverted side hiding under her oppressed life that explodes all over poor Tanukichi who doesn't know what hit him.  His image of the perfect sweet girl shattered til he is left speechless.  Whenever Ayame gets a chance she will just utter constant dirty words at Tanukichi.  Ayame goes around trying to bring perversion back by wearing nothing but a sheet to cover an other wise naked body and a mask to hide her identity.  How they get or make porn or leave it for the masses to uncover is what the show is all bout and it usually ends up with hilarious results.

13 Minami-ke

Minami-ke

There is plenty that is amusing about this seires not just season one.  Most of the jokes/humor are of a bit more subtle subdued variety that you may miss if you aren't paying attention.  They happen like humor happens in real life and usually just from normal interaction among the characters.  Most if it comes from or at the instigation of the middle sister, Kana, however.  She is the prime engine that drives the show as well as the source of most of it's lighter moments.

14 The Law of Ueki

The Law of Ueki

Ueki has about the most lassez faire attitude toward life as you can get.  He does not seem to care about consequences if it means giving up something to save anyone else.  That is part of the source of humor though.  Ai appoints herself as his guardian of sorts to make sure he doesn't do anything that costs him what makes him, Ueki.  But watching them is funny.  Everytime a warning comes about Ueki doing something wrong, Ai looks relieved as she should be for getting a heads up but when she tries to tell Ueki or prevent it, Ueki had already done the deed and she was too late.  It is moments like that which make the show so funny and fun to watch.

15 www.Working!!

www.Working!!

Working!! spinoff may not quite have it all as together as the main show but it is stll pretty funny.  The lead character is actually a better lead character than in the original and a more natural artist of the laugh.  Much of the comedy actually centers around him but he is not purely a comedian and he does not have as strong as a comedy talented supporting cast as the original.

16 Gokudo

Gokudo

Gokudo is a bad person.  His personality is selfish, self centered, and rotten yet his bad qualities are so bad it becomes part his charm and a great source of humor.  It is ironic, odd, and funny that his antics mostly has the reverse intended effect and helps.  His evil nature in fact is part of how and why he defeats bad guys.  It's a quirky antihero spin and one of the best and most unique.

17 Vandread

Vandread

'Women are monsters and men were once their playthings' rarely has an opening line in any movie or series had such a powerful first impression or impact as the opening lines from this series.  Just from that, you know the show does not take itself very seriously.  Or just look at the way Hibiki succumbs so easily to peer pressure or his fits of rage when they are attacked.  It is at times a bit heavy on ecchi/harem overtures like play but it never actually falls totally into any of that.  This show though has some of the very best and most memorable comedic lines of all time.  It might well be for that reason alone I include it in the top ten.  It's basis for comedy is all about gender stereotypes for the most part and it plays that role to a t with an extreme bend on the comical aspects. For example, there is a bit that says the planet of men is rather dull and never celebrates holidays and the planet of women is built to excesses always trying to top one another for showmanship or something of that nature. This might well be what you get if we ever had a gender war, well in the future anyway after space travel became commonplace.  Though this is done in a more twisted stereotype satire sort of way.  However the jokes are not quite non stop and is interupted by more dramatic or action scenes.  If they dedicated more effort and time to the humor parts, it might have been the funniest anime or even show ever.  If for no other reason watch it for the great lines you will see sprout up now and then and laugh at all the most outrageous gender stereotype humor you could ever find.

18 Mikagura School Suite

Mikagura School Suite

Eruna is a lesbian ish equivalent of a pervert and she spends most of her time trying to find a girl friend at an all girls school.  Yet most of her plans tend to either backfire or result in some other humorous outcome she had not prepared for.  I never quite get the impression anyone else is actually into girls within the context of the show but it is still fun to watch her try.  In a sense, I suppose she might as well represent the huge obstacles for anyone seeking love and acceptance anywhere or at any time.  I am sure you do not have to be in a situation like a lesbian in a all girls school to feel fear and anxiety about finding a girl or boy friend for whatever gender you are.  It is the same for everyone, though there are a few for whom that does not seem to effect much if at all.  Yet it is true for most of us I feel pretty certain, irregardless of your situation or gender or preferences.  So this show captilizes on that but perhaps by making her interested in girls at a girls school they perhaps intended to make the situation a bit more awkward and challenging. For the most part she is after Seisa but there is never any solid hint, Seisa accepts her as anything more than a friend at any point.  That is one thing that always bothered me about harem or romantic anime, and that is that too often it is utterly ambigious and never commits to anything solid for the potential love interests or the main character.  Well this show follows that tradition albeit with humorous results.  The humor though at times pokes mild fun at what she is and seeking it never really feels malicious either.  For the most part, Eruna kind of sets herself up for big falls then of course falls.  She is always a bit too anxious, over the top, pushy, or quick to move.  But ya know, her behavior might be comical in any setting and result in similar effects no matter the conditioins.

Think of it as a light heared romantic-esque comedy with a bit of a twist.

19 The Legend of the Legendary Heroes

The Legend of the Legendary Heroes

The comedy part of this show comes from the amusing interaction between Ferris and Ryner.  It is almost like watching Willis and Wayans from the Last Boyscout.  Their diatribe comical sparring is worthy of merit, but that humor is not the focus of the show and given many of the disturbing war scenes, violence, and gore, this show even if it had the best comedy of any anime can never rank very high.  I maybe judging it too high as it is.  Aside from that, the comedy parts are nearly of the same caliber as Full Metal Panic at the top and comparable in some aspects to great comedy teams.  It's the other parts of the show that help drag it down plus, that humor is not constant nor is it a large part or portion of the show.  You only see bits of comedy compared to what each episode of the series as a whole offers.  However, what you get to see is pretty decent.  Though at times Ferris' constant bullying of Ryner based on false assumptions gets a bit dry.
