Anime with the Best Female Characters

These are anime with at least one but usually many more than one good female important or lead characters. These maybe either protagonists or antagonists.
1 A Certain Scientific Railgun

A Certain Scientific Railgun

Mikasa is the most well put together admirable female character.  She is smart, crafty, cunning, and yet still cute, childlike, and keeps a certain level of truly girl qualities about her which adds to her appeal and her ability to balance the whole package together without losing a sense of her identity.  She is one of the most powerful figures in the world of her anime set of series.  And the animation is so well done dramatic and life like that you can clearly see her embarressed blushing reactions to anything humiliiating to her such as anyone realizing she likes cute childish things still at her age.  She has charm, appeal, looks, cuteness, a great sense of morality and ethics, and never abandons her friends even if some of them try to come on to her in romantic ways though she obviously has feelings for Toma despite her clumsy efforts to fool people into thinking she doesn't.

2 Hayate the Combat Butler!

Hayate the Combat Butler!

Hinagaku Katsura is one of the most well crafted female characters.  Like Mikasa above you are rewarded with plenty of cute, charming, signs of strong emotional states such as blushing embaressment or confusion that are easy to read on her face.  She can seem vulnerable at times like when she mulls over options or hints she might be interested in someone but she is also quite independent, strong willed, and more than capable of handling herself in most situations.  She is not the overly endowed with female assets like most atypical central female characters often seen in anime such as large breasts or holding sole attention of one or more other major male characters.  Nor does she tag along like a drone to a queen to anyone male or female.  She does not even get overly involved with the three clutzes, though she maintains a strong friendship with them.  Her charm, appeal, and concern shine through her tomboy ish tough exterior inspite of her efforts to subdue and disguise her true feelings and character.  She has nothing to feel weak or ashamed about because she is a truly admirale female character who can hold her own and stand out as one of if not the strongest characters in an animation where she is supposed to only be a lesser character tucked into the background in the shadows of the two main ones.

3 The Irregular at Magic High School

The Irregular at Magic High School

This anime actually has several good strong female characters and though Erika Chiba stands out pretty strongly, she just can not beat out the class president, Mayumi.  Mayumi is small and cute but also very bright and one of the more powerful magic users who is also a gifted magical athlete with plenty of connections of her own and she is part of one of the strongest and most powerful clans of magicians.  The cute little teasing games she plays, mostly with Tatsuya creates a charming, fun, and witty dynamic relationship which more on her part than his she shows an interest in him.  Not only that but from the very beginning she sought him out as if it was destiny for her to meet and introduce herself to him before any other of the major characters did.  She more than anyone else even Tatsuya's sister recognizes some intrensic value in him and charm and appeal worthy of her attention when no one else even Tatsuya's sister (who at first treated him as poorly as the rest of his defunct family) recognized him for himself as a person worthy of treating as a person from the first moment.  True thought that she hated the prejudice from the begining as well and treated most people far more fairly and equally than most anyone else in the crazy magic oriented world she exists in.  She never hesitates to help people in need or stand up on her own against even tough odds.  Her smile is absolutely infectious that it even somehow effects the mostly stoic, Tatsuya.  She seems to be the only one that can regularly get anyone to smile or laugh.  Her cutesy little games to tease and torment the boy she likes only fails to fool her friends Mari and Suzune.  She has a gift to be in charge and handle running things even when they get extreme such as a raid by intruders.  Her ability to remain calm in precarious situations also makes her compatible with the Shibas. She truly stands heads above the rest of a very strong female cast of characters on the show.

4 Happiness!

Happiness!

Haruhi is in every sense of the word the ideal girl next door.  You can't help but fall for her charms and root for her dream to come true that she has been trying to achieve every year on Valentine's Day.  She is one of the most powerful magic users and certainly tops in her school or at least her year.  Her best friend is a total klutz magically and one of the best sources of comedy.  She might be a match for Yuna's best friend who is a total perve but always puts his foot in his mouth.  Yuna's little sister is almost a fantasy ideal little sister nearly too good to be true.  I mean they not only don't fight but get along well.  Takamine is one of the more powerful magic users and an upperclasswoman.  Though her pet magic wand is a tad annoying, she is a solid character, smart, almost psychic (or perhaps she is? She does sell fortunes at times), and probably the only student to know as much as the head teacher of the school's and towns history bad and good.  A good bit all links together like pieces of a puzzle in the end such as who was where in the past tragic events.  Ibuki is a tsundenere-esque figure but not as a harem gf to a boy but as a friend to another girl, just a friend.  Yet she is also plays a good gal and bad gal role.  She maybe more powerful than any of the other girls at school but hides it or at least hides the limit of her true power.  I like the teacher and Yuna's mother but I was somewhat perturbed ty the less than stellar believable past that brought both women to where they are in the present.   In this anime, even the bad guy girls are great characters.  No one is really a truly bad character here, and that is pretty rare.

5 Soul Eater

Soul Eater

Maka Alban owns this show.  She is an all around great character.  She is charming, reasonable, modestly ambitious but not to the cost of others' sakes, very powerful which only grows more through out the series, cute, and quirky as for example she wears boyish clothing.  And her main nemesis, Medusa, is no doubt one of the best all around evil female characters.  She is a survivalist.  She supposedly isnt the most powerful which yet her cunning and survival instincts seem to more than make up for any outmatched power she has, plus the way she uses her powers are another boost that gives her optimum advantages over others even some more powerful than her.  Do not be fooled though, she is through and through evil incarnate and she enjoys being evil.

6 Bleach

Bleach

Just to be fair, Bleach has some of the best overall female characters and some of the worst most despicable female characters as well.  Neliel Tu Oderschvank is one of the best characters.  Her range of charming quaint qualities surpasses most mundane run of the mill characters.  She is sexy and cute, childish and aggressive.  Depending on which face and form she takes.  When in danger she can return to her original powerful adult form and is one of the strongest characters around period, her only holdback is that she is in a weakened state and can't show her true full powers.  But as per her demonstrations, she should easily rank slightly higher than Kenpachi given how much more easily and faster she nearly finished the same opponent that it took Kenpachi more time, then again you could argue he liked to toy with him yet when he got serious or wounded, you have to wonder.  She should at least rank in his range, slightly below or equal but I think she is stronger.

In her child form, she is cute, naive, dependent upon others, childish, playful, and even helpful, but she is also a bit gross because she has such a strangely overly runny nose.  Her adult form is more charming however, because for one that is technically what she really is, and two, she has more character depth in that she shows enemies such a cool, fearsome, dead stare it would alone make them quake in their shoes.  However, her nice side she shows to friends is still bubbly, cute, lovable, and her face displays big, happy, adoring eyes.  Her child form while charming can be a tad annoying and drive you as up the wall as a real child.

She already faced the growing stages once either in whatever previous life she had or during her growth in the afterworld from whatever low level spirit she started as to the one she became.  This could lead to three possibilities for a future character use:  1.  She has to grow up all over again from child to adult to reach her full potential as it was before.  2.  She can change back and forth, either by will or by need and either as a disguise or as a child that can use an adult like spirit power.  3.  She regains her power and reverts to adult form.  However if they plan to keep the child form open for the last possiblity, then they could make it conditional other than weakened power or make one form the default and the other a temporary shapeshifting form with limited conditions.

As a character, for whom we the viewer, can see so many sides of, it gives her great depth and appeal.  She provides an alternate view of that entire atlernate world, Hueco Mondo.  Not everything there is evil.  It almost makes me wonder, what if she had never lost her place?  Would she still have a sweet side or would she have been an evil pawn like all the others?
