Ascendance of a Bookworm

Jul 21, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) No objectionable content (TV-PG). Recently, I've been looking into the English dubbed anime on Crunchyroll. (It is very hard to find the dubbed anime on Crunchyroll using the PS4 application, but I found a work-around.)  After watching the isekai anime:  1. High School Prodigies Have It Easy Even in Another World! (3/10) 2. The Hidden... Masamune-kun's Revenge

Jul 12, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) No objectionable content (TV-PG). One word to describe this anime is infuriating. The show has so much squandered potential. So much potential wasted, the creator should be ashamed! SHAME, SHAME, SHAME!! Put me in the room, and I would have made a masterpiece. The genre is a standard romantic-comedy between high school teenagers. As usual, the romance is awkward, but some jokes really had me laughing. The plot is continuous, but without a clear goal in mind. sigh. I was on the edge of my seat for a very long time, then they dump you with mediocre events and the most stupid plot... See full review

The Quintessential Quintuplets 2

Jul 3, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) Minor Objectionable Content (TV-14). This review only applies to season two. If you're looking for my season one review click here: Dubfan's Season One Review. Usually, I would only write one review for both seasons, however season two is a much better anime than season one. They certainly polished-up this story. Definitely an enjoyable show. Since this is a direct sequel, most of the set-up, environment, and characters are previously established. (Standard harem anime, but with quintuplets.)... See full review

Diary of Our Days at the Breakwater

Jun 22, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) No objectionable content (TV-PG). This anime is an infomercial about fishing. Educational, but not entertaining. I do not recommend this show. Skip this one! The story revolves around four high school girls and their common interest in fishing. It is a slice-of-life genre with a sprinkle of comedy for stimulation. The plot is continuous from start-to-finish. Although, the plot is not compelling and the goals are vague. In fact, this anime can be seen as episodic. Characters development is below average with almost zero character attachability. Get used to the original characters... See full review

Convenience Store Boy Friends

Jun 18, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) No objectionable content (TV-PG). A below average anime. Standard romantic-drama genre with a large emphasis on confusing emotions. Confusion is expected on teenage romance, but this is almost Citrus level character confusion. Plot moves at a very slow pacing. This anime made me sleepy a few times. Some important events that are introduced were not followed though. Albeit, a few scenes are cute. The characters are rather bland and below average. There isn't really anyone unique, it's a cookie cutter mold. (Mold "A" = Character "A".) Many... See full review

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation

Jun 2, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) Strong objectionable content (TV-MA). Not advisable for children or minors. Graphic sex and violence.  This anime is below average and disappointing. The show draws you in with beautiful animation and sound, then dumps you with a mediocre plot and average characters. It's like a piece of coal wrapped inside a velvet pouch. The story is a standard "isekai" which means "otherworld" or "different world", but in an anime context it is more proper to be phrased as "sent to another world". Isekai is a popular genre, notable shows include... See full review

D4DJ First Mix

May 29, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) A diamond in the rough per se. Definitely an under watched anime, but enjoyable nonetheless. I ended up watching the whole story in one night. I recommend giving this show a watch. The anime is set-up as the friendship of high school girls and their shared interest in acoustics. I didn't know the effort that goes into becoming a DJ and mixing music. Its plot is continuous from start-to-finish and has a clear goal in mind (that is a important to note, because many recent animes do not have a clear goal in mind). Another benefit is that this story progresses at a steady pace, it's not... See full review

Horimiya

May 27, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) Minor objectionable content (TV-14). This anime is a really good find, certainly above average. A diamond in the rough. The genre is a romantic comedy with significant focus to the comedy aspect. Some of the moments really have you laughing, especially with facial expressions. Definitely enjoyable.  As for the plot, there are a few issues. The plot is discontinuous as there is a large implied time-skip which isn't mentioned unless you're paying close attention to the dates and background seasons.  Most schools in Japan use the trimester schedule: (Unlike... Gleipnir

May 23, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) Objectionable content (TV-MA). Gleipnir had a lot of squandered potential. It was like brainstorming, but without a precise goal in mind. There are many unanswered questions. The main plot decided to show up late to the party. The story moved too slow in comparison to the number of characters. The setting was too large. On the plus side the anime has a continuous plot with many events and no gaps. At first glance, the characters are amazing. To use a fishing term, that is the "reel" for this show. Unfortunately, the character growth was not even close to being done... See full review

Deadman Wonderland

May 9, 2021

Strong objectionable Content (TV-MA). Not suggested for children, minors, or anyone. Well... Calling this show bad is a compliment. I've seen crumpled paper in a wastebasket with more promise. I don't even know where to start. Oh yeah! Let's start at the plot, I almost forgot the show had a plot. Each episode blends together, there isn't really a single standalone moment. I suppose there is a vague goal in mind, but it changes a few times. It's simply fumbling around in the dark looking for something else to avoid losing viewers. The story has many unanswered questions. You ask it, 75% of the time it's... See full review

Violet Evergarden

Apr 19, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) Minor objectionable content (TV-14). Although, a few scenes can be seen as (TV-MA). This show is a must watch for every anime fan. It took me three attempts and many tissues to finish this anime. The plot is developed and continuous from start-to-finish. That is a great quality in any narrative. As for characters there really is only one character Violet, none of the other characters have any depth or individuality. Although, the story makes up for this downside with vast character growth. The major problem with the show blurs the lines between the drama and action genres... See full review

Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina

Apr 15, 2021

I really liked this show, but the show does fall short objectively. The anime is episodic, which means that each individual episode gives a mini-story. Some of the stories really touch your heart, other stories do not. In fact each individual story can be rated differently. (This is seen in every episodic show.) Characters are lovable and above average. There is some character growth, but not much. I really like Elaina as a character. Great animation and sound. Give it a try!

K-On!!

Mar 16, 2021

This review is only for the second season of K-On! (K-On!!). I didn't even know there was a second season until recently. Compared to the first season, the second season was a major disappointment. The environment, characters, and group dynamics were already established and remain the same. Some of the secondary characters were elaborated. The plot drags along at the turtle speed. Although the show did have a few moments, but mainly it was the goofing around aspects for 26 episodes. It felt like a super long OVA rather than a new season. Not bad, but it should have been better. My expectations were... See full review

Okko's Inn Movie

Mar 7, 2021

(Spoiler Free Review) Minor objectionable content (TV-PG). A fine gem, your missing out if you don't watch it. It's a very heart touching story about a young girl assisting at her family's inn. A continuous and linear plot, which is normal for movies. The key that makes this movie special is the depth that is placed on the human psyche. (I was confused at first, because it goes against the standard norms. Most animes avoid "detachment from reality" in character development.) Characters are lovable and there is vast character growth. The animation is beautiful, however the sound needs some... See full review

Rent-A-Girlfriend

Feb 25, 2021

Objectionable content (TV-MA). If you are easily offended, then do not watch this show. I was wondering what all the fuss was about, so I decided to watch this show. The story revolves around the protagonist Kazuya Kinoshita and his college experience with love. We see in the first thirty~ seconds, that the relationship with his girlfriend does not end well. He stumbles upon a company, Diamond, which allows clients to pay for dates (non-sexual escorts). The plot is continuous, but it's too slow for a single season. There are many unresolved events. Hyouka

Feb 14, 2021

This anime is below average. It is a slice-of-life show with a romantic undertone. The story is composed of several short skits none really in relation to the others. There isn't much of a plot nor clear direction. It's as if they are stumbling around in the dark trying to find something to accomplish. No goal in mind. The story revolves around the main characters joining classical literature club to prevent the club from being disbanded. Although, the classical literature club does almost nothing with regards to classical literature and somehow turns into the sleuth club. Where mysterious events are... See full review

(Spoiler Free Review) No objectionable content (TV-PG). I came looking for copper and found gold. This show exceeds expectations in every way. Good thing that I wait until an entire show is released before watching, because I ended up watching all twelve episodes in a single night. The story is of a father and young daughter sharing their everyday lives. The catch is that the father is a raunchy manga artist who doesn't want his innocent daughter to know the truth about his work. There is a time-skip jump on most episodes which really makes the show. Dr. Stone

Dec 19, 2020

(Spoiler Free Review) Minor objectionable content (TV-14). This anime is certainly enjoyable, but it is hard to rate it high objectively. It falls short on both plot development and character growth. Dr. Stone is a standard shounen anime and (as with most shounen anime) doesn't have a clear goal for the plot. There is a vague overarching plot, but any paths have yet to be determined. I believe that multiple seasons are anticipated. The characters are nice, however the majority of character growth is stagnant; get used to the initial characters. I like that there actual science behind common... See full review

The Quintessential Quintuplets

Oct 21, 2020

It was an enjoyable show, however it is hard to give it high marks objectively. After seeing the first 5 minutes I thought this show stemmed from an adult visual novel. That is not necessarily a bad thing, Fate Stay Night and Utawarerumono stemmed from adult visual novels. This show stems from a manga. It is a standard harem show. Like most harem shows initial plot device that brings everyone together is trivial. The characters have some good potential and grow throughout the show. Even though they are close sisters, each girl has a very different personality. There is: The Natural. The Introvert. The... See full review

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? OVA

Don't spend the money, one of the worst OVAs that I've seen.  As it is a side story from the first season the major characters and settings don't change in anyway. Problem is the quality of the content. Pick any episode in Hestia: Season 1 and that episode is better then the OVA.

Izetta: The Last Witch

Aug 23, 2020

WATCH THE FIRST FIVE EPISODES. Everyone needs to watch the first five episodes of this show, then you can stop. Although the plot is continuous from start-to-finish, the story has so much squandered potential. I thought of two or three amazingly different ways that the plot could have unfolded. The characters are one-of-a-kind. Izetta, Fine, and Sieg really make the show. Animation is average and sound is pretty good. This show had the potential to be 9/10.

Aug 19, 2020

(Spoiler Free Review) Minor objectionable content (TV-14). Not a bad show, it is definiately above average. I wanted to watch a few episodes yesterday, but I ended up finishing the entire blu-ray. Most episodes had me laughing. The dialog misunderstandings and the slapstick jokes are hilarious. Unlike this genre, the story is not just a series of unrelated events. This story has an overall direction. Initial characters are averge. Although, some characters obtain a great amount of character growth through the story. How Clumsy you are, Miss Ueno

Aug 18, 2020

A silly anime. The story is comprised of short skits, none really in relation to each other. Similar to other skit shows, Lucky Star (most popular) or Tsuderude Children, there is very little overarching story. Although the plot has a vague goal in mind, it cannot make any progress toward that goal. In other words, the story is stagnant. That being said, some of the skits are hilarious and I had to pause the show for laughter. Aug 13, 2020

It was an average anime. Nothing special. The story was comprised of a few short stories. Some are enjoyable others were not. I wish they had made an anime about one of the stories. There is no clear goal for the plot. The initial characters fit a role in the show. Although, most characters have no history or background for their actions in the plot. Is it simply money? Unfortunately, there isn't much character growth in regards to the individual stories. Animation and sound are above average. If you're board, give it a watch.

ERASED

Aug 9, 2020

ERASED is a must-watch for everyone. The story is a fine gemstone in a velvet pouch. As this anime is a psychological-drama, it talks about important morals. It is a serious show. Do not expect "slice of life" or "comedy", nor watch this show half-heartily. The story follows the "Butterfly Effect" from "Chaos Theory" in mathematics. This is a conjecture where slightly changing of initial conditions of a system will drastically change the outcome. Many shows, such as RE:Zero, use this situation as a major plot element. This is a tricky plot enabler in anime... See full review

There are many good shows in this genre. The initial set-up was interesting, however that fades with the first series of events. The plot does have a general direction, but it is discontinuous. Irresponsible Captain Tylor

This show is great! It is a good comedy submarine film genre, however it is set in space. (Similar to the movies "Operation Petticoat" or later "Down Periscope".) Due to an overwhelming war with an alien nation, the Raalgon Emipre, the United Planet Space Force requires every resource capable of combat. No matter how incompetent, every able body is necessary for the war. Yona of the Dawn

Aug 2, 2020

Minor objectionable content, not advisable for some audiences (TV-14). "Yona of the Dawn" was an interesting spin on the reverse harem genre. The main difference is the overarching story, it was intriguing. (This genre tends to have horrible overarching stories.) The plot is continuous, however it was nonrestrictive. The setting was large for the plot. Characters were cut out of a standard harem mold. Interestingly there was exceptional character growth. Animation and sound qualities were above-average.

The setting was too large for the events. There are many unanswered questions. Important plot points were not visited nor explained. Shows in this genre format will have a heavy comedic aspect.
