Raiyantsuuri no Uta

Jan 17, 2024

Raiyantsuuri no Uta is a period drama based on real events, recounting the life of an escaped forced labour prisoner of war, Inlen, a Chinese farmer who was forcefully taken to a coal mine in Hokkaido by the Japanese military during the Pacific War. Escaping just two weeks before Japan's defeat, after undergoing unimaginable forced labour, he embarks on a challenging life as a fugitive, yearning to return to China, oblivious to the war's conclusion. The movie establishes itself with a hooking introduction, showing the escape from the labour prison and seamlessly transitioning into Inlen's life being on the... See full review

Synduality Noir

Nov 29, 2023

Set in a futuristic cyberpunk setting, where humanity struggle against giant man eating insects using their advanced manned mecha. Kanata, the novice pilot, in a cave, stumbles upon a silver-haired red-eyed sleeping Ayanami Rei-clone, who then wakes up with the classic 'I-can't-remember-anything'. The premise appears intriguing on paper and filled with potential for mystery, intense action against scary giant insects, and -even if overdone- the exploration of themes like human-AI relationships or ethical dilemmas in science. However, upon watching, it becomes apparent the official site's synopsis is merely... See full review

Manga Sarutobi Sasuke

Sep 9, 2023

Manga Sarutobi Sasuke (1979), also known as 'Ninja, The Wonder Boy' in America, is the third iteration of the Sarutobi Sasuke character in anime, following 'Magic Boy' (1959) and 'Sasuke' (1968). While 'Magic Boy' adopts a whimsical fairy tale style and 'Sasuke' delves into a serious grim political feud, this anime attempts to blend both by being political yet goofy. Despite... Tteodori Kkachi

Aug 27, 2023

In the animation history landscape, Tteodori Kkachi holds a special place as the first South Korean anime to grace television screens. This pioneering creation emerged as a special movie-length episode, a testament to the evolving landscape of South Korean animation. Adapted from a sports manhwa created by Lee Hyun-se in 1984, Tteodori Kkachi introduces us to the world of Seol Kkachi, a young boy who, for years, has been embarking on a wandering journey alongside Seol Dae-po, his father. Rainbow Sentai Robin

Jul 28, 2023

Rainbow Sentai Robin is based on a shounen manga titled 'Rainbow Sentai', published in 1965. The manga was meant to complement the anime but, after a single volume release, it was quickly cancelled due to lack of popularity. Labelling the anime a direct adaptation of the brief one-shot manga is a stretch, considering its extensive 48-episode run. Consequently, the anime integrates significant original content, differentiating it from the source... See full review

Queen's Blade: Unlimited

Jul 17, 2023

Queen's Blade: Unlimited, as a soft reboot of the original Queen's Blade, introduces a new continuation while retaining the characters and the setting. This reboot takes a darker approach compared to its predecessors. Notably, the tournament now allows participants to kill their opponents, a departure from the previous iterations where such actions were discouraged. Additionally, the winner of any match has the power to demand anything from the defeated, intensifying the stakes and adding a layer of tension to the battles, on paper, that is. Despite my personal distaste for the franchise, I must... See full review

AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline

Jul 1, 2023

The mecha genre has undergone significant evolution, raising questions about its current relevance. While some detractors dismiss AMAIM Warrior at the Borderline as a cheap Gundam knockoff, a closer examination of modern mecha titles, including Gundam itself, reveals how the genre has transformed to cater to the preferences of a new generation. Traditional tropes and elements have been reimagined and reshaped, aligning with the changing tastes and demands of contemporary anime audiences. This observation is not solely... See full review

Aura: Koga Maryuin's Last War is a coming-of-age anime that attempts to navigate the treacherous depths of 'chuunibyou' with a serious and introspective twist. Unlike its comedic counterparts, Aura delves into the darker, more emotional aspects of this phenomenon, leaving you pondering the complexities of adolescent escapism.

This exploration of chuunibyou as an anti-escapist theme adds depth and meaning to the narrative, injecting a sense of realism that hits close to home. Aura succeeds in presenting the characters as flawed and vulnerable beings, making their emotional journeys all the more... See full review

Charlotte Special

Jun 18, 2023

Drama can be a powerful genre, but this anime manages to stumble at every turn, delivering a lacklustre experience that fails to leave any lasting impact. Strap yourselves in for a wild ride of exaggerated reactions, poorly written characters, and a nonsensical ending that will leave you scratching your head.

Apparently, the creators of Charlotte believe that drama is synonymous with over-the-top theatrics. Every emotional beat in this anime is cranked up to eleven, with characters flailing about like they're auditioning for a kabuki performance. I get it, drama is supposed to make us feel something... Cheonbangjichuk Hani

Jun 18, 2023

— INTRODUCTION —
Cheonbangjichuk Hani, also known as 'Hani 2nd Season' was aired in the same year (1988) as an alternative version of the popular anime Dallyeola Hani. Despite being marketed as a sequel in several anime database websites, this anime is nothing more than a reboot of the original story. The story focuses on Hani's life, and the characters from the original anime have undergone some changes. Unfortunately, this 'second season' fails to capture the spirit of the original series.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kaku Outbreak

Jun 18, 2023

After two seasons of the complete Higurashi story, we got nothing but short OVAs filled with silly comedy and shameless fanservice, and only one interesting yet pointless sequel; Dice Killing Chapter, we finally got the fifth anime instalment of the Higurashi franchise. Surprisingly, it is a serious side story that takes place in the second season, though the exact timeline was not specified. It's not a pointless sequel like Dice Killing Chapter, because it has little plot exposition like any other alternate world in the two seasons, but the new information you get is very little and trivial for someone who... Fist of the North Star

Jun 18, 2023

First of all, let's talk about the repetitive nature of the show. It seems like every other episode features the same formula: some evil guys do some evil things, Kenshiro shows up and beats them up, the evil guys inform their boss, the boss becomes enraged and sends his minions after Kenshiro, Kenshiro beats them up, then Kenshiro beats their boss, and the episode ends. Rinse and repeat. This formula is so predictable that it becomes tedious after a while, and you can easily predict what's going to happen next.

The repetition doesn't stop there, though. The show also reuses a lot of animations... See full review

Dragon Nest: Warriors' Dawn

As a former Dragon Nest player who is familiar with the game's story, lore, and characters, I have to say Dragon Nest: Warrior's Dawn is yet another failed video game adaptations. It's a Chinese-American animated 3D animated moviethat attempts to capture the essence of the popular video game Dragon Nest, but ends up falling flat on its face.

The story, or lack thereof, is a convoluted mess that takes place before the events of the game. Apparently, there have been countless wars between races like humans and elves (because wars are always more interesting when they're never explained, right?)... See full review

Welcome to the NHK!

Jun 18, 2023

— PREMISE —
At first glance, Welcome to the NHK may seem like a slice-of-life comedy or a romance with a thrilling mystery about revealing a conspiracy. However, it's important to note that if you approach it with these expectations, you're doing it wrong. The anime is, in fact, a social commentary dramedy that addresses real-life social issues through dialogue that relates to relevant themes. While it does not directly criticise the depicted issues, which is a good thing for those who dislike preachy anime, it offers a powerful critique of modern society's problems. Oshiri Tantei

Jun 18, 2023

First and foremost, I am surprised this is still getting sequels given how poorly it was received even in Japan. The premise is bizarre and borderline inappropriate for a kodomo anime. The main protagonist, Butt Detective, is a literal anthropomorphic butt who investigates crimes by sniffing out hints and farting on criminals. This concept is not only juvenile but also crass, and it leaves a bad smell in one's nose from the get-go, and it doesn't help when the main antagonist is a literal piece of shit.

As for art, with the exception of a few beautiful static landscapes, the animation and character... See full review

Boobies, two horny soldiers fucking like rabbits, despite being complete strangers, then blood is spilled everywhere. The movie tries so hard to keep the audience engaged that you can't help but notice how weak the story is by the end. But who cares about that when there are boobies to focus on, am I right?

This movie is a prime example of mindless action. You don't need to pay attention because the focus is solely on action and cheap shocking scenes. Sword Art Online, an anime series based on the popular light novel series, was one of the most highly anticipated releases in recent memory. However, despite its initial hype and interesiting premise, the series fell short of expectations.

One of the main issues with Sword Art Online is its lack of character development.
