I watched parts of the original bersek and barely remembered any of it prior to watching this series. I still understood everything, but you might have to go to berserk wiki to read background for Guts and Caska for clarification to their background. Great anime, very much enjoyed it. However, the animation is very poor. DO NOT let the animation stop you from watching this. Even though the animation is poor, everything else about the anime is superb. I am currently watching Berserk (2017) and it is getting much better.

Just finished watching episode 12, and I really enjoyed watching this season 2. There is alot of back stories in this season, which is a bit extended, but it does help give more depth to the characters and story. Overall the story and animation was superb. The sound, especially the soundtrack is just really amazing. The characters show a lot of development and are conflicted and this gives great depth to the characters. There is not much else to say, if you enjoyed season 1, this is a must watch. Great anime all together and I am excited for season 3!
