Nope, hating Itachi is acceptable even if you've watched Naruto Shippuden as well.
I don't get the hate on Gaara either. People say "Lame" or "overrated" but they never provide any actual reasoning behind it, and when they do, it's easy to provide a counterargument.
For example, all the bad things Gaara did? Well he was freaking INSANE for most of the beginning of the anime. So all the things he did during his insanity period (don't) make sense.
