Wolverine

Jan 31, 2012

I just began watching this anime, and in English at that, and so far my question is; why did they not let Hugh Jackman - the real Wolverine - be his English voice actor as well?

Personally, I don't think Milo was a bad choice, I just think Hugh could've done a far better job. Hugh Jackman was in my opinion what made Wolverine so lovable and yet so savage in the films. I am however positively surprised that they're using Vic Mignogna, who's one of my favourite American voice actors, though the character he's voicing creeps me completely out.

Back when I watched the 2010 trailer of this show I was very disappointed that the trailer did not even feature Logan, but a slightly too bishounen guy with his mutation. I was very reluctant of watching the anime afterwards, but I luckily realized they had dropped that idea and Logan remained the "Wolverine".

I'm very relieved, however, that the story takes place in New York instead of someplace in Japan, which in a way reduces the crazy Japanizing or Japanifying of the show; it remains true to the universe of Wolverine and the X-Men, despite the many Japanese secondary characters though most of them, as far as I'm concerned, are official Marvel characters (at least aside from Kikyo and Hideki).

I haven't watched much of the anime as of yet, though I still thought I needed to do a review, which I'll of course change once I'm done with the series; but I think included Cyclops was completely unnecessary. Professor Xavier would seem more valid, but I don't get why Cyclops would know Logan before he even joins the X-Team. And just like Logan I'm gonna have to say that Cyclops has become far too bishounen for my care, I didn't expect him to be ugly but neither did I expect to see a hunk. With Logan I would perhaps have expected a bit more muscles, but nevertheless the animators did a good job with the city-shots and other scenarios this anime features.

I think it's great they included Omega Red in the anime, he looks most horrifying like he should, though I would've enjoyed seeing Sabertooth or even Deadpool make an appearrance. I thought it obvious that at least Sabertooth would appear, since he's Logan's half-brother after all and that I grew up knowing that Logan's past was always chasing after him.

All in all this is an acceptable anime with its obvious mistakes, in my mind, but it's watchable. That said, I still enjoyed X-Men Evolution and the older X-Men cartoons far better than this. So far, sadly, I don't feel the urge to concentrate much on the anime because it lacks the kind of action I'm used to when either watching or reading anything Wolverine or X-Men-related and I don't really feel the story is too captivating yet; the only thing I've gotten out of it, is that Logan needs to save his lass from a forced marriage and only way to do that is a swordfight (in this case kendo-sword vs. claws), realize he's only up against a piece of wood and still almost loses.

I'm going to need some convincing to continue wholeheartedly. This is still a work in progress which I might, as stated earlier, change later.
