Peach Girl

Aug 30, 2017

When the manga first came out many years ago, I was in my early 20s and I remember feeling really blown away by the art style: Peach Girl was one of the first mangas of its kind to draw characters that way, and I bought it just for that. The attention to detail in the clothing and fashion was just gorgeous, I loved how Momo was drawn and the fashionable images of her in-between chapters. I read the entire manga just because I adored the art style so much.

In retrospect, now in my late 30s I think the story was quite bad, but undoubtedly I think this in part because I am in my late 30s. The entire story feels very self-inserty and self-indulgent to me, like everyone in the world was constantly invested in what was happening to Momo, who was always innocent and virtuous but perpetually suffering so much. Even the mangaka admitted that Momo's character is based on her and her own experience with having skin that tanned easily and so on.

Did I dislike the story back when I first read/watched it? No, I was happy. I was much younger and at the time I didn't realize stuff like the massive self-indulgence which I see in the story now. So if you're in your teens or 20s you may like it, especially if you're into stories where some female is constantly the center of everyone's universe, and other people have nothing better to do than constantly be interested in her life.
