Love and Lies

Sep 19, 2017

First off, I would like to say that I do recommend this show 100% if you're looking for a nice romance anime.

A couple of months when this show was announced, it received a good amount of buzz.  It was described as a romance anime with two possible girls but they're both best girl.  That just pushed me over the edge because who doesn't like a good waifu war?

Story

In this reality, when people reach the age of 16, they will receive a notice from the government on who they will marry.  This was all done to counter Japan's declining birth rate and has been successful since its implementation.  Through different tests on one's aspirations, personality, and perference, the government calculates each person's best possible match for marrying.  But... what happens if you just so happen to fall in love with someone the old fashion way?  That is the MC, Yukari Nejima's position.  Just before his 16th birthday, he felt like he should confess to this girl. Takasaki Misaki, who he's had a crush on since the 5th grade.  Turns out she reciprocated the feelings for just as long as well and for a short while they enjoy this bliss.  When the clock struck midnight, Nejima receives his notice and through a stroke of divine intervention, Misaka's name pops up to be his assigned wife.  However, government officials assigned to Nejima's relationship gave him a paper copy of his notice.  To the young budding couple's displeasure, the name of Nejima's assigned wife to be is Ririna Sanada aka My Best Girl.  Together the three of them explore their odd situation of their relationships with one another.

I really liked the premise of the show and thought it was really interesting.  It made me wonder how in depth do these tests go?  Are those people actually happy with their spouse?  What happens if it just doesn't work out?  Sure these couples may sound good on paper but it may just not work in actual practice.  There was also a question I didn't really even think about until the sitation came up due a surprise 3rd route.  They writing touches on a good amount of these points though.  However, it felt somewhat lacking in substance and deep explanation.  For me, the show started off pretty great introducing both girls and and why they're the best option for MC.  The problem for me though is that from the middle onwards, it just doesn't push their conflict farther.  It even does so to the point where the final episode wasn't a conclusion.  If it's not a conclusion then it was a shitty "read the source material" ending, right?  Nope.  It just kind of stopped with no resolution to the conflict at hand.  That just didn't really sit well with me.  Despite having a good foundation, it just never built to anything.  I know the manga is still going on but at least have some direction.  Then again, with the manga ongoing, I shouldn't have expected a conclusive ending.  The thing is though, I still enjoyed the story despite the non-ending.

Animation

Big.  Anime.  Eyes.  It took some time to get used to but you just do get used to it.  Character design overall was tasteful though.  There was not much in terms of high animations being a romance but I will not hold that against this show.  It was somewhat hard to look at because all of the bright colors made it a bit difficult to look at because it was blinding.

Sound

The OP is catchy as hell.  I sometimes catch myself rewinding it to listen to it again. Other than that I thought the voice acting was superb as well.  Thought the VA for Misaki was the best but she was able to show off more range more often.

Characters

As I said eariler, Ririna was best girl.  Her naivete and innocence added to her blunt nature making her just so adorable and endearing character.  I kept coming back for her because she was just awesome.  I seriously wished that Misaki was more fleshed out as a love interest though.  It felt like she was mostly carried by the fact that she was in love with MC for longest.  Yukari was a bit annoying due to his indecision and flippant nature.  He wants everyone to be happy but we all know that not everyone can be in this siutation.

Overall

Although I did really like this show, it just felt like a missed opportunity.  They presented a really good premise and thought of a great way to showcase it.  However, they just missed the mark from being a good show to being an alright show.
