Deadman Wonderland

Jun 4, 2015

So a while ago I saw a trailer for Deadman Wonderland on Cartoon Network for its upcoming Toonami airings.  Seeing how amazing it looked I began to be curious and decided to eventually watch it.  Couple months pass by without me honoring that statement but after passing by it on Netflix, I finally fulfilled that promise.

Story

Ganta Igarashi was a regular middle school student going about life.  One day a mysterious person showed up floating outside the window of his classroom who proceedes to decimate his entire classroom and the occupants leaving Ganta the only surviver.  He is wrongfully sent to prison and is sent to Deadman Wonderland, a prison which is also an amusement park where the inmates have to endure ridiculous trials to survive.  There Ganta learns of this power in which he turns his blood into weapons.  He vows to find the person that killed his friends and somehow escape.

This is the first time in a while I've watched some anime like this cause I've lately been watching school life stuff.  It's great to get some awesome action in.  This is exactly what you get here.  I'm not really a fan of gore so that part wasn't for me but written pretty well and focused on a great concept.

The main glaring problem I have with the story is that it was so rushed.  It was only 12 episodes despite leaving more questions than it answers.  It didn't really conclude.  It just stopped.  I hate anticlimactic endings because it turns a great.  They also didn't even really answer some of the ones it proposed early on.  Also it just somewhat forgot about two certain characters.  One was featured prominently in the first half of the show but after that he wasn't there to speak of.

Animation

You can mostly tell much of the budget went into animating the action scenes as it should.  Production looked really clean and detailed.  At first it was full of color to contrast the dark tone of the show.  Then it later matched it.  I would've loved to have kept the color because of the irony.

Sound

As I said eariler, I found it on Netflix so I ended up watching it in the English dub to see what it's like.  After only two episodes I didn't think it was that bad.  The voices were matched with what I thought they'd sound like.  The thing I liked was that no one was censored and the original dialogue was kept.  Soon after that I ended up having to leave and watched the rest of the anime in Sub which was also pretty good.

Characters

The cast of characters were pretty solid.  What somewhat bothered me is how wimpy Ganta was.  There wasn't much continuous development with him.  First  of all, he mostly still amazed how cruel and vile his environment is most of the time.  Later on it turned into just a switch he ended up flipping.  Overall, I disliked how some are just forgetten even though they played a larger role earlier on like I said earlier.  Also a lot of their back stories were really glossed over.

Overall

I really liked this anime.  It had great plot points that it could've delivered properly given time.  However, it felt severely rushed and some details were skipped out.  There definitely needs to be a second season of this.
