Your lie in April

Mar 23, 2015

I kind of forgot how I came across this.  I probably found out about this anime on this website.  It took me a while to finish this because I was busy with school.  I only just finished watching the show a few moments before writing this review.

Story

Kousei Arima was a child prodigy pianist.  However, after his mother's death 2 years prior to the initial story, he became unable to hear the notes he plays.  Therefore, he became too traumatized to play the piano.  In his last year of junior high school, he meets a violinist named Kaori Miyazono, who's the complete opposite of Kousei.  While Kousei is reserved and precise, Kaori is wild and outgoing.  However, she somehow inspires Kousei to get back to playing piano.

If I were going to describe this story in one word, it would be "beautiful".  It was a crazy roller coaster full of extreme twists and turns and highs and lows.  It just gripped me and didn't let go.  It was intense and dramatic but was natural.  I'm almost out of words to describe it but it was simply amazing.  The ending almost made me cried!  You may think that the title is a bit weird and makes no sense.  However, it makes full sense at the end of the series that made me wide-eyed and all hyped up for figuring it out.  The reason it's not a full 10 is because of the character's ages.  As I said it was pretty intense but maybe too intense for kids that are like 14 years old.  I didn't really fit.

Animation

One of the most beautifully animated series I've watched.  The colors were absolutely amazing.  It wasn't colorful just to be cute and stuff kawai.  If anything, it served a purpose. Kousei said that his life was dull and without color.  However, since meeting Kaori, color has been completely restored.  But with the drama, the color gets drained because of circumstances.  The one thing I kinda had a problem with was that they over-emphasized the lip design and it was kinda looked weird but I got over it.  One of the great things I loved is the attention to detail.  One example is that in the later episode when Tsubaki was doing batting practice, Kashigawa was windmill pitching.  It was animated so fluid and done so well, I was genuinely amazed.  Sorry for using too much baseball/softball language.  Like I said for the story, it was beautiful.

Music

It's a music anime so if they messed this part, it would become invalid.  It absolutely delivered!  I know practically nothing about classical music but this show got me to greatly appreciate it.  I even listen to some of the pieces on my free time for leisure.  There's also the two openings.  It's one of the few times that I've never skipped any of the openings.  They were so catchy that I just couldn't dislike them.

Characters

Perfect!  They were developed so nicely and every big moment was executed perfectly.  They were all multi-dimensional and deep.  There's almost no one to hate in this show.  I would've thought I'd dislike Watari, but he's not just a boy-whore.  He's actually a great friend to Kousei who's completely supportive of him.

Overall

One of the best animes I've watched in while.  Everything was done so well from the character development and animation.  I loved all of it.  You're going to feel when you watch this and that's exactly what you want in a good anime.  As I've been saying, Your Lie in April is just plain beautiful.

9.9/10 story
10/10 animation
10/10 sound
10/10 characters
10/10 overall
