J-Novel Club Best to Worst (Light Novel)

These are all of the light novel titles available on J-Novel Club that I have read, ranked from best to worst. Best is at the top, worst is at the bottom. This includes currently publishing titles, so a title's position may change as it continues. Series are not ranked until at least 1 volume has been read.
51 My Big Sister Lives in a Fantasy World (Light Novel)

My Big Sister Lives in a Fantasy World (Light Novel)

Of all the preview chapters, this one hooked me the most. Unfortunately, it pretty quicly slides into more typical light novel stuff, but it remains somewhat entertaining at least. The basic hook is that a new high school student can suddenly one day see words floating above peoples' heads describing them, including some strange ones like 'Zombie', 'Vampire', and 'Serial Killer'. Unfortunately, instead of doing anything particularly interesting with that, it pretty quickly turns into a comedy/romance/action thing centered around a strange school club. Oh, and main character's sisters are both attracted to him, because of course they are. It really all goes downhill; by the end of the first volume the main character has copped a feel, had his testicles discussed, and started a harem. The actual writing isn't too bad, but it has a tendancy to switch which character is the perspective without any warning.

I actually really like the premise of this one. While I've not played Starcraft myself, the idea of someone being the Zerg is quite fun. What's not so fun is the excessively dark tone and the lack of a likable character. The series is extremely violent, but even more distressing than that is how the main character not only orders, but seems to revel in acts of genocide. It's ok to have an imperfect, or even evil main character; the issue is that the story presents her as sympathetic, like we should be agreeing with these heinous choices she's making. The author seems to enjoy writing these horrid acts as well, but I couldn't take any more of it. There are no illustrations to speak of.

The Holy Knight's Dark Road (Light Novel)

A fairly simple setup that makes for some good humour. The first 2/3 is mostly just jokes, and then it tries to get serious for the end, with mixed success. Considering its lore is mostly just background details to set up jokes at first, there's some whiplash when it starts taking it all very seriously - enough to suck a lot of the momentum and fun out of the story, which it isn't really able to recover. Some of the actual descriptions of the fights are enjoyable to read and paint a strong picture however, so there's a good foundation for something in there. The art turns in a solid effort, with nice clear illustrations and shading in a fairly standard style.

60 Outbreak Company (Light Novel)

Outbreak Company (Light Novel)

Yes, it's another 'another world' story, but it's old enough that I can give it a pass for that. At least at the start here, this is a pretty small scale story. Only a handful of characters and places are introduced in the first volume, making it easy to keep track of who's doing what; more than I can say for some others on this list. I get the feeling that it won't be too long before it starts to expand (I'm thinking the royal court will be important), but as long as he keeps this pace, I think it has a lot of potential. I can kind of tell this is by the same author as Bluesteel Blasphemer; his fascination with sexual content really comes through. That's probably one of the reasons I don't much like the main character, but also he's just kind of boring so far; just your standard otaku. The others don't have much to them beyond their archetypes either. In fact, the most interesting one is probably the lizardman, who only shows up a couple of times. The art it softer than the average series has, with sort of a pastel-y feel to it, despite the grayscale presentation. Overall, I'd say it's fairly attractive.

61 JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World (Light Novel)

JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World (Light Novel)

I mean, it's basically all there in the title, huh? Credit where it's due though, this is actually quite a well written book. The characters are interesting and believable, the plot is intriguing and fairly well paced, and most importantly the writing is actually enjoyable to read. Not only does it poke fun at the glut of isekai stories with overpowered men building harems, but it does it while being better written than they are, too. For a one volume story, it does a good job resolving the things it needs to resolve, and comes to a solid climax, but does leave several threads open. As you can tell by the title, there is a lot of sex in this story, and it's far more explicit than I wanted, or than I felt was strictly necessary for the point it was making, so this book is definitely rated M for mature. There are no ilustrations to speak of.

62 The World's Least Interesting Master Swordsman (Light Novel)

The World's Least Interesting Master Swordsman (Light Novel)

Man, it's not kidding about the least interesting part. Not the battles, like the title refers to, but everything else that happens is quite boring. It tries to have its cake and eat it too, with regards to standard isekai tropes: the main character is boring, and ends up encountering a more standard protaganist with his harem and cheat powers. And while they comment on the absurdity of the standard setup, the story spends enough time with the harem for readers to realize that the author actually likes the standard isekai setup more than it initaially appears, and will probably start morphing the main characters to fit that mold more. The art has some nice shading details to it, resulting in a solid sense of depth and shape to characters, who have appealing enough desings.

63 Record of Wortenia War (Light Novel)

Record of Wortenia War (Light Novel)

'Pulpy' might be a good way to describe this one. It's every bit the isekai wish fulfilment that something like Smartphone is, but instead of being about living a comfy life in another world, it's about being the most capable person in a world that's against you. It actually reminded me of New Life+ in a lot of ways, especially with the focus on ensuring the death of all opponents. It also opens with a cryptic prologue about some grand plan for the future of the story, which I absolutely don't care about. The art is somewhat unique, as if it was painted with thick brush strokes that don't all line up, rather than a clean illustration.

66 In Another World With My Smartphone (Light Novel)

In Another World With My Smartphone (Light Novel)

This is an extremely provisional placement, since so little of the series is available now, but it seems interesting enough. The main character is already super OP, and we're only on the 2nd chapter or something. Also, saying 'God made me OP' isn't really an exciting plot device. Hopefully he'll actually have to struggle for something at some point. Also, the harem's getting an early start as well. The art's pretty par for the course too: not bad, not exceptional.

67 The Underdog of the Eight Greater Tribes (Light Novel)

The Underdog of the Eight Greater Tribes (Light Novel)

The protaganist is supposedly weaker than everyone else due to his genes, and he enters a city entirely focused around dueling. So it's basically a shonen tournament arc from the word go, and doesn't really do anything to set itself apart in that space. It's not exactly boring, but it is very standard and never gave me a reason to care about it. Not the story, not the characters, and not even the world. There's also an older woman who wants to jump a little boy's bones, which isn't particularly appealing. The art is fairly soft, making it somewhat hard to take seriously in a story like this.

68 Demon Lord, Retry! (Light Novel)

Demon Lord, Retry! (Light Novel)

This was quite the disappointing series premiere for me. Not only was it immensely boring, but there just wasn't anything redeeming about it. Not only was it very similar to other series, but it mimics them in a worse way. The overpowered protaginist pretending to be evil, the character who speaks only in double entendres, the general obession with sex, the attempts to shove modern economics into a fantasy world... None of it worked for me, and the worst part is it wasn't even fun. The art style, on the other hand, was at least unique. Very soft grays and blotchy shading, giving it a bit of a messy feel.

69 My Little Sister Can Read Kanji (Light Novel)

My Little Sister Can Read Kanji (Light Novel)

Basically, this is a future where everyone is expected to be in love with their little sister, and all novels are written poorly. I know this is supposed to be a parody, but the focus on little sisters, especially elementary school age ones, is kind of sickening still. Hopefully the main character will snap out of it soon and realize just how creepy his world is, because right now it's unsettling being inside his mind. Right now it's just reveling in its world; it needs to start critisizing it. There's a shift in the story around chapter 4 that will hopefully define the series from here on out, because it really helps juxtapose their future with our world today. For a series that's so heavily reliant on the idea of kanji, the translation does a pretty good job of helping English readers (though there is a bit of a disconnect when kanji are shown with their meaning noted beside them, and then the main character says 'but I couldn't read them').

70 Mixed Bathing in Another Dimension (Light Novel)

Mixed Bathing in Another Dimension (Light Novel)

The first few chapters aren't too bad, to be honest. Yes, it's a series about a boy whose power is the ability to summon a bath anywhere, but thus far at least, it's not just an excuse for naked shennanigans. In fact, thus far there have been almost no bath scenes like you might expect, though the author does spend an inordinate amount of time ogling the girls with his words. I've actually been impressed how the main character actually tries to think of ways that it could be useful to him surviving in the world. He's a surpristingly practical guy. The main complaint that I have with the characters so far is that everyone is way too cool with a harem situation; I just can't buy it. I'm fully expecting it to fall off the deep end into dumb smut land soon, but for now, it has promise.

72 Bluesteel Blasphemer (Light Novel)

Bluesteel Blasphemer (Light Novel)

The concept isn't bad, with guns being introduced to fight the gods of an unsuspecting fantasy setting, but it kind of feels wasted so far. The whole thing feels like it was transcribed from a teenage boy's dream one night. The first several parts are actually one of the most sexualized books on the service, second only to Mixed Bathing so far, for no clear reason. Some of the plot points don't feel out of place (offering women to the hero to get him to stay), but the way it's written just makes it clear that the author was getting some enjoyment ouf of this that just doesn't sit well with me. Especially the wierdly erotic eye rub. The art's pretty cool though, with a kind of rough sketch appearance. Volume 4: I've never been a big fan of this series, but wow it's going way off the rails now. We're deep into S&M and incest territory now.

73 Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest (Light Novel)

Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest (Light Novel)

I'll need a lot more chapters to come up with a better opinion of this series, but for now it shows promise. Transporting an entire class to another world is a unique enough spin for now, and I am a fan of the main character being weak (for now; the title kind of implies that he'll get OP eventually, and that should hopefully be satisfying). The main character is extremely cynical about religion, and I get the feeling that the author shares that opinion, unfortunately. Aparantly this is a harem too, though that hasn't show up yet, as there's only one girl that's interested thus far (though this is only after chapter 2). The art looks fine, though in one of the early illustrations there's a panty shot that really didn't need to happen, which worries me. It starts to become really mean spirited by volume 2 especially.

75 Yume Nikki: I Am Not in Your Dream (Light Novel)

Yume Nikki: I Am Not in Your Dream (Light Novel)

Extremely surreal. What I really wasn't expecting was the dive into Freud and Jung's theories. I can see how some people could like this sort of thing, but it's really not my cup of tea. It's also hard to imagine how it could ever have been a game. I haven't played it myself, but this didn't really convince me that I'd want to anyways.

76 Demon King Daimao (Light Novel)

Demon King Daimao (Light Novel)

This is definitely a battle-magic-high-school series, that's for sure. At least it has a slightly different take on things going for it, with the main character being destined to be the bad guy; I am genuinely interested to see if he'll buck his fate or give in and do the best he can with it. The characters are your pretty standard harem flavours at the moment, but I'll give them time to get fleshed out (hopefully). I've heard that it can be a somewhat raunchy series (at least as far as the anime version goes), but for volume one at least, I've been reasonably impressed with its restraint. There are (of course) still scenes of bumping into naked girls and panties and such, but the descriptions of these scenes have been fairly dispassionate and to the point thus far. I doubt it will last. The art is pretty standard, and is definitely not afraid to go for the sexy shot.

78 How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord (Light Novel)

How NOT to Summon a Demon Lord (Light Novel)

This is a series that I wish I could like, but ultimately I have too many reservations about it to continue. The writing style is generally fluffy and fun, but doesn't feel as lazy as Smartphone. Unfortunately, there are two big knocks against this series. The first is the 'enslavement' aspect. I know it's played for laughs and is an accident, but a guy putting collars on girls and enslaving them is just icky feeling. The other is, of course, the sexual content. If you've gotten this far in the list, I'm sure you'll have realized that I have a low tolerance for ecchi stuff, and this book is the most ecchi of all the first volumes thus far. The main character is kind of a pain, since he plays the tsundere, and all the girls kind of feel like they're ticking boxes for the eventual harem. The art is fine, but it definitely loves to ogle the girls.

79 Clockwork Planet (Light Novel)

Clockwork Planet (Light Novel)

A planet that runs off of clockwork sounds like a pretty alright idea for a setup, but the execution... It's just so mind-gratingly terrible. There are no endearing characters; everyone is the worst. Why does the robot have an abusive speech filter? Why does the main guy like it? The art was alright though; not great, but probably the best part of it all. This was the first series I read that I couldn't wait to drop after just 1 volume.

81 Brave Chronicle: The Ruinmaker (Light Novel)

Brave Chronicle: The Ruinmaker (Light Novel)

Focusing on breasts and walking in on a girl in the shower; overly complicated magic with excessive exposition for random battles; and the main character is in love with his little sister and won't shut up about it. It doesn't get more light novel than this. I managed to read the first volume, but honestly, getting through just the first chapter was quite the struggle. The basic premise is that the main character's little sister is actually a super weapon, and only he has the power to transform and wield her. And then people invade from another world. The battles... aren't that great, but they're probably the best part of the book. Not that there's much competition: there are 3 parts to the story: batttles, exposition, and everyday life stuff (almost entirely focused on breasts). The prose isn't bad, but it can't save the story from its own contet.

Yeah, that's on me; I've read them, but been very delayed in updating the text descriptions. You know how it is: fall behind once, and it starts to feel impossible to catch up. Hopefully this is the kick in the pants I need to actually start bringing this back up to date.

"These are all of the titles available on J-Novel Club that I have read"
Um, but you have stuff you havent read here... and they're listed above stuff you have read? I don't think that's how that works, and even if you've watched the anime or read the manga adaptations (dunno if you have), ranking stuff based on their adaptations is a rather inconsistent and inefficient way of ranking stuff. So like, hmm.

Will be checking out several of these due to this list thanks. Wandered in looking for someone else's opinion on Mixed Bathing in anotherwhatever. I'll give it another volume or two based mostly on Rulitora. ;p
