Inuyashiki: Last Hero

Oct 1, 2022

Inuyashiki is a psychological horror anime plagued with bloody crime scenes. Inuyashiki is named after the main character - a very caring elderly man: Ichirou Inuyashiki. Both Inuyashiki and Hiro happen to be in the same playground when their bodies were converted to machines. But they still keep their memories, emotions, etc. They gain supernatural abilities that can tamper electronics, heal people, fly, fight in combat situations, etc. Inuyashiki secretly goes to local hospitals to heal people. He cures their injuries, and sicknesses. But one day Inuyashiki is confronted by Hiro’s friend who informs him about Hiro’s local killing spree.

At first, Hiro may appear as a merciless, ruthless, and senseless murderer. Hiro is also an overpowered villain with tremendous combat abilities. He can take down a whole country worth of police officers and escape unharmed. His motivation for killing is that it makes him feel human. But in reality, Hiro’s family situation is shattered. He has a lot of family disparities. His parents are divorced. Hiro lives in a house with a single mother. But he visits his father and other siblings when he is free from his high school activities.

Throughout the anime, Hiro actually changes. There’s actually people that try to convince Hiro not to kill others. He cherishes his mother, Shion, Shion’s grandmother, and his friend: Naoyuki. But the police try to punish Hiro for his crimes, and he wipes out the police department. He puts Shion and Shion’s grandma at risk.

But what disappointed me was that Inuyashiki was always late or didn’t appear to prevent crime until the very end of the anime. He wasn’t trembling in sweat, cowardice, and fear like Kaneki Ken originally did. There were so many opportunities for Inuyashiki to appear and try to stop Hiro.

Also, there was a shortage of intelligent characters. I honestly think Hiro killed because he didn’t know better. Hiro just doesn't have a sense of justice. He didn't know right or wrong.  He didn’t care about the victims until the police and citizens started harming people he values like his mom, Shion, and Shion’s grandmother. Hiro has a human side to him. But I also felt the writers couldn’t make up their mind about Hiro. He is been in both sides of the spectrum of good and bad. Hiro healed people and saved people’s lives in the anime after his killing spree. So it’s quite an inconsistent anime.
