My New Boss is Goofy

Dec 23, 2023

There was a lot of great anime this season, but this iyashikei series just had a simple magic to it that made me happy each week a new episode came out. The atmosphere is chill and relaxing without being dull, and the characters are amusing to watch without being too over the top. It's just the wholesome story of four guys who gel well together and honestly deserve some positivity in their lives. Three of the four have had it rough lately - two have suffered traumatic abuse from toxic former employers and the third is a lonely man trying to adjust to life after divorce - and the... Rent-a-Girlfriend

Jun 13, 2021

How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways... This show feels like pure trash to me, mainly because it is full of garbage characters. The male lead is a lying, self-absorbed manchild with no real understanding of how to navigate life or human relationships, and the female characters are all seriously stupid and annoying. Throw in some nosy old ladies - one of whom treats us to a creepy scene where she gropes a young woman in the bath - and male friends who might occasionally do something encouraging but for the most part just say jerkass things like "virgins gonna virgin" and you've got a show... Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!

Jan 4, 2020

This show is a trainwreck for a number of reasons.  Firstly, all the fanservice and boobs jokes have an extreme ick factor. The main protagonist is TWELVE YEARS OLD and another recurring child character who falls victim to this is only TEN. There's even a bizarre lesbian pedophile who collects girls and wants to add the 12 year-old to her harem. The whole thing is seriously gross, but the sexual objectification of children is only one of the show's many problems. The storytelling is extremely sloppy for one thing; problems are often solved via ass pulls, misplaced humor ruins what... See full review

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku

Dec 24, 2018

Life is hard for otaku. Our hobbies are merciless in their demand for our time and energy, and whether you have a lot of money or are perpetually pinching pennies, somehow whatever free cash you have becomes a sacrificial offering to the gods of otakudom. (Yes, you need to pay the water bill, but that box set that just came out is a *limited edition*! And while having a savings fund would be lovely, do you REALLY want to pass up going to your favorite convention this year?) People who do not understand this magnetic pull that anime, manga, video games or -insert random nerdy thing of your choice here- has... See full review

Day Break Illusion: il sole penetra le illusioni

Dec 12, 2017

This show wasn't great and it wasn't horrible. It was forgettably average, which is a shame because a lot of the plot elements were interesting and deserved further exploration. - Things I liked - The four main characters Each of the four girls had her own backstory and personal motivations. We had a chance to get to know each of them and understand what makes them tick. They got genuine character development, learning from their experiences and reevaluating their beliefs as they were presented with new information. None of them were above realizing their own flaws and weakness and they... See full review

Maria the Virgin Witch

Dec 22, 2016

Ever wonder what Kevin's mom from "Home Alone" might have done in a previous life? Yeah, me neither. But after watching "Maria the Virgin Witch" I'm wondering if she might have lived in medieval France, because the title character very much resembles her. Maria also reminds me of a younger, virginal version of Vash the Stampede personality-wise with her staunch pacifism. I enjoyed her adventures a lot, quite more than I actually expected to. I love pacifist characters because they have so much space for learning and growing. Maria's attempts to help the people of France by... See full review

Hans Christian Anderson's The Little Mermaid

Apr 27, 2016

While this anime is a precious part of my childhood (in fact it was one of the first anime I ever saw at age 4) rewatching it so many years later has given me a very different perspective of the classic story. As an adult I notice one particular theme that is constantly repeated throughout the tale: Bad decision-making. "The Little Mermaid" is a tragic tale of bad decisions where we watch Marina, the pretty youngest daughter of the sea king, make one poor decision after another while her peers and elders either assist in or reward her unwise behavior. Unsurprisingly enough, her foolish actions... See full review
