The main characters in these shows are bought at an auction, sold at a slave market, or exchanged for cash or other goods in a private sale. Many purchased protagonists are victims of human trafficking or forced marriages, although some people willingly sell themselves to pay a debt, help someone they love, or escape what they feel is an even worse fate. Characters can be bought for a variety of different reasons, including cases where good samaritans pay specifically to rescue and liberate them.
