I'm fairly new to the scene of film and visual media critique, and thus far it's been pretty easy to piddle all over mediocre titles that the less-discerning masses have heaped undeserving praise on simply because other more-established critics have shared the same snobby, down-the-nose opinions I've had. This, sadly, is not the case with the 2001 film adaptation of Metropolis, and has caused me to question my own opinion as I pen this review. Nevertheless, mummy always told me to write what I know and brush my teeth, and seeing as the latter suggestion has worked out pretty well so far, here goes. ... See full review
I'm a little late to the Mahou Shoujo Madoka party, so once again, between all the reviews already up on anime-planet, I'm not sure how new a spin could I give to this series. Nevertheless, I shall try. Here's a quick spoiler-free run down of my numbers on it:
Plot: 4
The series started off well, raising just enough questions and dropping enough hints early on as to the show's direction, although given the series length of 12 episodes, the starting could stand to dawdle less. Right around episode 4 when the explanations start, the plot holes start opening and go on unplugged the rest of the... See full review
I've been struggling with this review for the longest time, trying accurately describe my conflicting emotions with regards to this series. In an attempt to ease the writing (typing) process, I've decided to disregard the usual categorical segmentation of Story, Animation, blah blah blah. This is due, in part at least, to my own past struggles with properly segmenting character and story summary, and being forced to hammer out a paragraph about the sometimes lackluster elements of animation and/or sound (certainly the case this time around).
Also, I couldn't think of a way to convey this review... See full review
I have to admit that when I undertake an anime series these days, I usually enter with a subconscious urge to identify flaws so I can pick them apart in a review later down the road. IE, I'm usually watching in anticipation of its collapse, keeping an eye out for the key points in the structure that failed. Arakawa Under the Bridge is a rare case of an anime that managed to convince me to root for it, and subsequently be disappointed as it tripped over itself in the running. Story: 5 Ichinomiya Kou is a young man born of a strange, but nevertheless superior pedigree. His family heritage... See full review
I wrestled for a while as to whether I should write a review for Angel Beats, but my egotistical side finally won over with the argument that there isn't enough hate for the series despite how appallingly badly-written it is. For those that have watched it and disagree, I can prepare concise, whiny little nit-picky writeup for you. This review, however, shall attempt to contain as few spoilers as possible, and as such, will not be viable for debates in detail. Story: 3/10 Angel Beats feels like an anime that messed around with many popular elements of recent anime before Key remembered that they... See full review
I'm aware that people get scared off by text-walls, so here's a short one for you text-wall phobics: Story: Good first half, humorous parodies with good plot twist and recovery story; horrible second half, full of Gundam and DBZ nonsense. Animation: Top-notch Sound: Decent and varied. Characters: Too many characters no one cares about, a couple of likable ones, but little development overall. Overall: Lost sight of itself midway through; tried and failed to be something it's not. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Introduction: At... The Short:Story 7 - Offers a different (arguably disturbing) take on previously-seen situations and settings with a fitting ending (I found it somewhat satire and extremely satisfying. how evil of me!). Animation 7 - Well-done and pleasant to look at, but is pretty typical with nothing new to offer. Sound 7 - Similar to the animation; does it's job well, but nothing eye-opening save the VAs.Characters 6 - Well-designed and fleshed out (stereo-typical due to the nature of the show), yet utterly unlikable on my part.Overall 6.5 - Take one part kimi ga nozomu eien or similar, mix with one part higurashi no...
