Eureka Seven

Mar 1, 2011

Story (6/10):

"I can't believe it's not butter."  Err, that is to say, I can't believe it's not better.  Eureka Seven came to me highly recommended, sporting a new world, addressing important themes like war and racism, and from the heavily lauded Studio BONES.  Yet, this show failed to impress me on so many levels that I can't help but feel a little bit like a kid whose father never showed up for his soccer game.  The ride is fun, of course, but you never get a chance to look up and see the one thing you're hoping to find.

Eureka Seven suffers from... See full review

Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha Gaiden

Jul 31, 2010

Happy Lesson

Jul 29, 2010

Story (2.5/10): "Give harem anime a chance." That phrase, spoken by my once best friend--note, our falling out is, surprisingly, unrelated--prompted me to wander into an anime bootleg shop in Chinatown and snatch the first short piece I could find. I watched three episodes with a look of horror on my face and promptly shelved it.  Picking it up and watching it in its entirety, six years later, living on my own and in another state, is neither something I can explain or condone.  Despite my original intentions, Happy Lesson is not a typical harem anime. While it does rely on... See full review

Blassreiter

Jul 29, 2010

Story (4/10): I have a guilty fascination with animated blood and explosions that look like someone upended a carton of orange sherbet all over the screen. As a result, I watch more shounen anime than might be appropriate for my age. When I started watching Blassreiter, I knew exactly what to expect: computer generated fight scenes, twinkling droplets of blood and, since it's a Gonzo anime, slightly above average content. That last specification was, perhaps, a little too optimistic. The studio responsible for Hellsing and Chrono Crusade again produces a title packed with flashy monsters... See full review
