Dark Gathering

Nov 11, 2023

Dark Gathering reminds me of a combination between In/Spectre and When They Cry, but with a mascot character that's pushed to the forefront of the show and contains a lot more 'comedy' (and with that I mean, a lot of screaming and overreacting). The first episode had three main characters, where 2 of them have the ability to see and/or feel spirits and the last character is the hottie that's just there for comedic relief. One of the characters acts like the biggest scaredy-cat when being confronted by spirits, while the other acts the complete opposite. I didn't stick around long enough to get the... See full review

FLCL: Grunge

Nov 5, 2023

The Medical Mechanica plant is back, to iron out those wrinkles. This time, we see what kind of impact the Medical Mechanica plant can have on artisans. In the three episodes of FLCL: Grunge, we follow the lives of three kids; Shin, Shonari, and Orinoko. Shin is a boy who works in his father's sushi restaurant, but the restaurant is struggling to get customers. Not only that, it's struggling to get good quality fish... and Shin wants to learn from his father, but the current state of the world makes it hard for him to learn anything.  Then we have Shonari, a rock alien... The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses

Nov 2, 2023

I've been reading the manga for quite a while, and when they announced that there was going to be an anime adaptation, I was expecting the worst. Mainly because the manga chapters are really short and sweet. Everything about the manga is very consistent, and, in recent years, a lot of studios have struggled to capture that same vibe when adapting the manga to an anime. Unlike most of the other romcom manga adaptations, this one actually isn't bad. A few episodes in and I have to admit that I'm positively surprised! The visuals are stunning, there are moments where the animations are out of this world, and... See full review

Burn the Witch

Oct 8, 2023

Burn the Witch is a short story about 2 witches that protect both Front London and Reverse London from dragons. Front London believes that Reverse London is a fairytale, while Reverse London is the magical side of London that tries to keep itself hidden from Front London. People that can't see dragons would be living in Front London, and those born with magical abilities will find themselves ending up in Reverse London, and are called watchers. Watchers aren't allowed to come in contact with dragons, only a select few can do that, which are known as Dragonclad.  We basically follow... Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation 2nd Season

Oct 3, 2023

A rather depressed Rudeus continues the search for his mother. He realizes that moving from town to town would be a rather ineffective way to gather information, so he decides to accept a lot of work in order to build up his reputation instead. Eris is still troubling his mind, her leaving him the way that she did being the reason for his depression. He meets with a group of adventurers and one of the girls reminds him of Eris, making Rudeus aware that he has a problem. The problem gets addressed in the second part of the season, where Rudeus receives an invitation to attend the university of... See full review

Take My Brother Away 5

Aug 3, 2023

Not much to say, it's just more of what we've seen in the past. Short skits about what a clumsy fool Shi Fen is, and how his sister, Shi Miao, is better at everything but stops functioning when Shi Fen's best friend Kai Xin shows up. Then we have Shi Fen's other friend, Wan Sui, who is a rich boy, but undergoes the same brain malfunction when Shi Miao gets anywhere near him. The series isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. Most of these skits are pretty straight forward, but it's executed well and the goofiness is charming.

My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU Climax OVA

Jul 19, 2023

A little follow-up episode, mainly for the fans who wanted to ship Hachiman with Yui. I personally don't believe Hachiman would have ever been interested in Yui, even if Yukino wasn't around. So, this episode feels like it was released to give the shippers a little bit of hope for the future. While Yukino and Hachiman are having dinner with Yukino's mother and Haruno, the other girls talk about the whole love 'triangle' with Yui. How does Yui feel about everything that has happened, and how does she move forward? Komachi and Iroha give Yui some advice and that's really about it. Other than that... See full review

Vinland Saga Season 2

Jul 18, 2023

At the end of season 1, Canute was forced to kill Askaladd after Askaladd killed his father, the king of Denmark. The death of Askaladd also meant that Canute took away Thorfinn's reason for living, which was to get revenge for the death of his father, Thors. Thorfinn took a swing at Canute in anger, Canute became king of Denmark and sentenced Thorfinn to a life of slavery. Askaladd killing the king of Denmark was basically the passing of the torch. The weak and indecisive Canute became a bold and fearless leader, while Thorfinn went from a deadly killing machine to becoming a man without a... See full review

Brand New Animal

Jul 11, 2023

The show feels like it's trying to tackle a bunch of different touchy modern day topics, like LGBTQ. Religion, human rights and racism. But instead of referring to the labels as we know these topics, the show creates its own labels. Beastman, being one of them. In the first few episodes, the show dives into how ‘normal’ society treats those who are considered a beastman. Some beastmen struggle to accept that they are one, some beastmen consider being a beastman the most normal thing in the world, and then there are those who aren’t beastmen but try to manipulate the rules so that they can... Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV: Part II

Mar 19, 2023

This second part of the season actually delivered something I was complaining about in the first season, which was Ryuu's backstory. But I still feel that it didn't get the attention it deserved, and a lot of that is mainly due to how it was squeezed into this part of the season. I've made mentions of this is the past, I would have loved to see these important stories be treated with the attention it deserves, but most of the time, those available extra episodes end up going to the fan service episodes.  This is still my favourite franchise, and I still love the story and all the characters, but... Chainsaw Man

Dec 28, 2022

Chainsaw Man gave me the impression that there were two shows going on at the same time, about 2 completely different topics. You have the human element, where Denji (the main protagonist) is on a journey to create meaningful relationships, with other individuals that have experienced similar traumatic events, and the other part of the show, the demon part, is about all sorts of crazy fears.  I really loved the human element of the show. All the characters, that we're introduced to, are extremely flawed characters, but they also have a certain charm to them. Even the so-called bad guys show their... See full review

Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? IV

Oct 8, 2022

The first part of season 4 wasn't the greatest, but it also wasn't the worst I've seen in the series. Just like the previous seasons, some of the directorial choices are questionable, which resulted in really devaluing important moments. Moments that could have been really memorable, that just ended up feeling flat. The team goes back into the dungeon, making their way to floors that they had never explored before. The Hestia Famila has been relying heavily on Bell, and the first arc was meant to show that all the other characters in the Hestia Familia were willing to step it up. Instead of giving the... Call of the Night

Oct 1, 2022

Recently, I've not been really keen to see manga adaptation hit the screen, mainly because a lot of the shows feel soulless. And with the manga having such a unique style, I had my doubts. Then the first trailer got released, and it actually showed a lot of promise. A show that looks really promising, but you don't want the expectations to be too high, because you feel that it could only end up as a massive disappointment. And, how was it? The team delivered an amazing product. Tomoyuki Itamura used that Studio Shaft flare, that we have seen him use in the Monogatari series, in combination with an... See full review

Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun

Sep 30, 2022

A lot of this season is about how much you value something, why you value it the way you do, what value means to others, why others may value things differently to you, and if those values can change over time. How far are you willing you go, for something that you value a lot. Reg, Riko and Nanachi make their way deeper down, into Abyss, where the creatures become are even more dangerous than those we've seen in the past. While our friends are resting, Riko's white whistle gets stolen and a strange drawing is left behind. Our friends set out to look for the white whistle, and come across a... See full review

SPY x FAMILY

Jul 14, 2022

First off, I really love the character designs and the main setting of the show, which really reminds me of Baccano. There are moments when the show delivers some stunning action animations. But, as much as I wanted to enjoy the show, the story, the main characters' personalities, and the side characters just weren't connecting with me at all. Yor's character design is absolutely flawless, and will most likely be praised as the number 1 waifu of 2022. But. She just never really feels like she's really part of the show. She's handled like a trophy wife that people are only allowed to admire... See full review

takt op.Destiny

May 7, 2022

I started the first episode because the trailer looked rather impressive animation wise. The story remained somewhat of a mystery. The animations were indeed impressive, but the story felt incredibly odd from the beginning. 50 years from now, music has disappeared because when you play music, creatures will show up and attack you. So we start the first episode with a conductor character who powers up a magical girl zero-two wannabe character and them both taking on one of these creatures. They somewhat destroy the town square, but move on after slaying it to a local diner, where they destroy the... See full review

Teasing Master Takagi-san 3

Apr 21, 2022

In the previous two seasons, Takagi was the only one who really tried to express her feelings, and Nishikata was just too immature to really understand what was going on. However, in this season Takagi acts a bit more mellowed out, which creates room for Nishikata to grow into his feelings for Takagi. Takagi still drops hints that she's interested in him, and Nishikata is starting to pick up on the little hints, but especially in the beginning of the season he still thinks that she's just trying to tease him. I felt the balance was off in the previous season, but I guess you could also just see... See full review

Komi Can't Communicate

Komi Can't Communicate is a show about a young girl, named Komi, who struggles with a communication disorder. To most people around her, she comes across as a very confident and elegant girl, but in reality she struggles to communicate with the people. Instead, she uses pen and paper to get her message across. Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation - Part II

Dec 20, 2021

This show just continues to impress. After a really strong first season, the second season maintains that really high level of consistency. The thing I love the most about this show is its world building, with character development coming in as a close second. It's a joy to see what kind of approach our heroes might take in dealing with their conflicts, since every conflict is handled in its own unique way. The characters can be extremely goofy, but can be serious when they need to be. Everything in this show has a personality. We get to see our heroes travel through several continents... Ganbare, Douki-chan

Dec 19, 2021

Ganbare, Douki-chan was a short but sweet romcom. It felt like a more polished compared to Tawawa on Monday 2, which was a show  released in the same season in almost the exact same format.  Ganbare, Douki-chan follows a girl (Douki-chan) who tries to compete with 2 other female colleagues over the affection of one of the male colleagues. Every time Douki-chan finds the courage to make her move, the other 2 female colleagues come swooping in. It creates some funny but also rather awkward situations. But let's keep it real and simple, the male just seems a bit of a push over, which is... See full review

Tawawa on Monday 2

Dec 19, 2021

Tawawa on Monday 2 wasn't a bad watch, but it's another one of those shows where the art fills like it's not quite up to par with the manga. The manga is just more lively, more detailed and the way its frames just makes it all a bit more entertaining than the anime version. I do think Tawawa on Monday 2 serves its purpose in boosting an interest for the manga.  The show follows a bunch of girls with big boobs, who find themselves in situations where their boobs either become the focus point for a skit or to put their love interest in an awkward situation. Just a rather... See full review

The Aquatope on White Sand

Dec 18, 2021

This was a really strange show that started out with a lot of potential, and it seemed to be a complete package, but after a few episodes it just started to fall apart. The animations are alright, visuals are gorgeous, and the set-up is there for an emotional story which is what you expect from P.A.WORKS, but unlike most of their other recent works, a great portion of its drama is just not that entertaining to watch, and it's also just really dragged out. The show starts with an idol, who fell out of the spotlight, trying to reinvent herself, which was pretty neat. The show then moves its focus towards an... See full review

To Your Eternity

Oct 19, 2021

To Your Eternity had a very interesting concept and I wish it was executed better. The main issues I have with this show is how the plot was pushed along, how awkward all these characters were and how silly some of these awkward forced 'friendships' were considered important life lessons.  The first arc was rather good, it reminded me a lot of John Carpenter's The Thing. An immortal shape-shifting being takes the shape of a wolf that had passed away, makes its way to a small village where he befriends a young boy who lives in a village all by himself. The immortal being watches the... See full review

A lot of people were confused when they started watching Higurashi: When They Cry - Gou but Higurashi: When They Cry - Gou basically just opened up doors and create new paths for Higurashi: When They Cry - Sotsu. I do have mixed feelings about this season. I really do appreciate how they've created new story paths that do really change up the way we've experienced the other paths in the past but at the same time I feel a little unsatisfied with how the show wrapped things up. Mother of the Goddess' Dormitory

Sep 18, 2021

Mother of the Goddess' Dormitory has one of those concepts that we've seen in plenty of other animes. A guy ends up in a female-only apartment. Most of the girls don't consider a guy living among them a problem, but then there is always that 1 girl who thinks that it's a horrible idea, but ends up being the girl that falls for the main protagonist. Normally there is another layer to the story, but this show is well aware that its viewers aren't watching this show for that reason.  The plot may be weak, and the characters may feel extremely awkward, silly and obnoxious at times, but if there... Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time

Aug 16, 2021

What a wild ride. I don't even know where to really start. I really enjoyed watching Rei, trying to live a normal life and learning how to enjoy life among the people who survived the near third impact. This was a real treat, and I really wished we got to spend more time with the cast in the other rebuild movies as we did in this movie. I really enjoyed Shinji's and Asuka's growth, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Normally, I'm not a huge fan of the empty husk character, but you are and will always be an exception to the rule Rei... no matter which version it is of you. The combat scenes... See full review

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo

Aug 16, 2021

The 2.0 movie was a rather wild ride where things went a bit different from expected and the 3.0 movie just added a whole new level to that. The movie starts a few years after where 2.0 ended, with Shinji not really knowing what happened during the time he went missing and wondering why everybody is angry with him. Shinji is told by his old friends to never pilot an Eva ever again because he can't be trusted. So a rather confused Shinji feels like he's messed up and starts looking for ways to undo what he has done. I felt that up to this point the rebuild movies weren't able to really nail... Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro

Jul 7, 2021

"Don't Toy With Me, Miss Nagatoro" was a manga series I had been reading for a while and I always expected it to receive an anime adaptation, but I also have to be honest and say that I didn't expect it to be any good. Nanashi, the author and artist of the manga series, has a history of publishing hentai material, so I always thought that the anime adaptation wouldn't be picked up by one of the well known studios due to it. It's still cool that more people are getting introduced to the series through an anime adaptation that might have otherwise never known about the manga series.  So I... See full review
