Hinamatsuri

Jun 19, 2020

Beware, this ends as if there's going to be a second season. If there isn't, many storylines will remain open. Numerous scenes made me laugh so hard I was cry laughing. There just weren't enough of them in this SoL/comedy to push it past a 7, though.

Interviews with Monster Girls

Jun 15, 2020

Slight spoilers ahead. . . . As nearly every reviewer has said, this show is cute. As an example, we learn that the vampire girl enjoys nibbling on people. Not drinking blood, just sort of teething on them. So the group has a contest as to which person she would most want to chew on. She evaluates their arms like a connoisseur evaluating fine wine. The teacher loses by a landslide because his arm is hard and hairy. There was never a hint that her vampire instinct would take over and that she'd actually draw blood. This show never went in this direction - it always stayed positive. That positivity made... See full review

Darwin's Game

Jun 14, 2020

Don't give up on this anime just because the first episode is riddled with stupidity. The story becomes much tighter after that, and the logical holes infrequent. If there isn't a second season you won't be pissed off at how they ended this one. As with any good show, you want more of the story, but this season is self-contained enough to be satisfying even if they make no more episodes. Finally, you'll know if you want to continue watching this or not after 3 episodes.

Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei

Jun 14, 2020

There is almost no plot to this anime. It is a comedy, and a funny one at that. However, it appears that everyone at the studio was high on crack at all times while making this show. There are frequent moments when pages are flashed on the screen so quickly that I had a difficult time rewinding and trying to stop at the exact 1/20th of a second that it was visible. This occurs many times during each episode, so a good deal of time is wasted trying to see all of the flash scenes. The hook for me at the beginning was that the teacher was ostensibly suicidal, but would scream at someone who had put him in... See full review

Beelzebub

Jun 9, 2020

Beelzebub is an anime about a class of high school delinquents, one of whom involuntarily becomes a parent to the demon lord's infant son. The entire premise is ridiculous, which is what makes the show so funny. Before the protaganist destroys it, the students attend a school specially set aside for delinquents, but no teaching ever takes place. In fact, at this first school I don't recall a teacher even being in the classroom. The only activity we regularly see at this school is the kids fighting, and there's a lot of fighting. I'm won't specify any more of the story, and I won't attempt to describe why... See full review

The Devil is a Part-Timer!

Jun 3, 2020

There are some light spoilers to follow. Regardless of the tags for this anime, it's primarily a comedy. In virtually every episode I laughed loud enough to scare my dog at least once. The situation the demons are placed in is ridiculous as well. Satan is flipping burgers and aspires to be a manager one day, Lucifer is a neet, and Satan's master strategist, the demon Alciel, is essentially a housewife. I've read many reviews with poor ratings because there should be no forgiving a monster like Satan even if he becomes a good human. Of course that's correct, but that's not what this show was about. The... See full review

That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime

May 25, 2020

This anime started so well and ended so poorly. It's as if the professional writers flew to Hawaii for a month long vacation and let the high school summer interns handle the last 5 or 6 episodes. It got so bad that the last TWO episodes were mostly recaps. Slight Spoiler The anime begins with the slime meeting a very powerful dragon, and the slime eats the dragon in order to him help escape from a magical imprisonment. They agreed that they would both try to figure out how to release him from the slime's "stomach". (The slime seems to have infinite storage space.) This was very intriguing, and... See full review

Death March to the Parallel World Rhapsody

May 19, 2020

The worst part about Death March is that it had the potential to be good, but never became better than average. There were interesting side characters that would have been fun to see more of, but none of them were more than superficially used. There was even another Japanese person that had been resurrected into that world, so you'd think there'd be some sort of camaraderie there, or at least recognition of their connection, but no. Her part is to play the overly jealous girl of the harem. The biggest problem though, is that nothing all that interesting happened. We never even see an incredibly powerful... See full review

ReLIFE

May 18, 2020

I believe that if you graduated from high school (or even college) more than about 10 years ago, you're almost guaranteed to like ReLIFE. However, that's not to say if you're younger you won't, because it's well-written, clever, and funny, with an interesting group of characters. But being out of school for a while lets you appreciate the show a little more, since you'll so easily relate to the MC. I have little else to add to this review or to the numerous others already written, but I will note that the soundtrack can often be atrocious. There's so much dialogue that's literally covered over by an... See full review

Orange

May 17, 2020

If you're squeamish about mental illness or have issues with people suffering from mental health problems, then you shouldn't watch this anime. If mental illness doesn't put you off, then there's a very good chance you'll like Orange. It isn't the tightest anime - there are many plot holes and many times you want to reach through the screen and throttle the female main character for acting so damn stupid. But if you can set the occasional lack of intelligence or common sense aside, the emotions will sustain your enjoyment. It's definitely a tear-jerker.

World Break: Aria of Curse for a Holy Swordsman

May 16, 2020

Despite the very many plot holes I liked it, which is strange because one of the main characters was an overbearing, obnoxious, loud, screeching sister that was constantly interrupting any interaction he had with another female. It has a fun premise: magic users who remembered that they were magic users from a prior life were trained to be mages now. The male protagonist remembers 2 prior lives, which is rare and makes him op. Some interesting side characters also made the show fun, including the funloving female vice captain who was constantly mildly molesting everyone and getting her head painfully... See full review

Maoyu: Archenemy & Hero

May 13, 2020

Be warned that this has an atrocious ending. I can only assume that they anticipated a second season, because every storyline was left in the air. Even without the ending, it wasn't a great anime. That's not to say it was bad, but it wasn't really all that good either. The show presents itself with a protagonist who's a virtually unstoppable hero, yet we don't see him involved in a single fight. To be fair, fighting by anyone was rarely seen, but still - he's the hero. We should be shown why. Slight Spoiler Romance was also a part of this, but it was as if 9 year olds wrote those parts of the show... See full review

Scum's Wish

May 9, 2020

This is a fabulous anime that I will never watch again. Every major character is painfully damaged, emotionally, regarding romantic relationships. The writer of this show must have been profoundly hurt by a love that wasn't returned, or was returned in a twisted way. This wasn't fun to watch, but that doesn't detract from its quality. For what it was trying to portray, it did so wonderfully. It really conveyed the misery of these people, and the desperate choices they made to alleviate it. The tone is unrelenting. There are no moments of comedy here - it's tough the entire way through. There is no... See full review

Highschool of the Dead

May 4, 2020

Let me tell you what this show is not. It is neither hentai nor borderline hentai, despite what other reviewers claim. There is no sex at all. If you watch the censored version, there is no full nudity. If you watch the uncensored version, you'll see one character's nipples for a short time in a bath scene. What you do see throughout portions of the show is a quite a bit of skin, primarily the top half of the breast. Yes, there's plenty of fanservice, but the bulk of the pantyshots occur in the first couple of episodes. Get past those and it's mostly just as described above. There is no rape, despite... Food Wars! Shokugeki no Souma

Apr 30, 2020

I resisted watching Food Wars! because I'm not at all interested in cooking shows. I finally caved in after seeing so many positive reviews from various sites, and I'm glad I did. This review covers seasons 1 thru 4. Soma, the main character, reminded me of Ichigo from Bleach. He's young, irreverent, good natured, and sticks up for his friends. The voice even sounds similar. If a mild version of Ichigo would put you off, you should probably stay away from this anime since he gets the most screen time. There aren't any other particularly memorable characters. Two months from now I won't remember anyone... See full review

Kimi ni Todoke - From Me To You

Apr 21, 2020

What drew me to this show was the premise that the main girl resembled Sadako from The Ring, and whose looks made all her classmates ostracize and fear her, even causing dogs to bark at her. The first episode showed her inadvertently giving people scary looks, and there were a couple very brief shots later, but that's it. The visual presentation of the premise of the show was gutted after the first episode, which is trajic because it could have added some good comedy. Without the scary looks, this is just another bland romance. I'm baffled that it is top 500 on Anime-Planet. The animation was an ADHD... See full review

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

Apr 19, 2020

This show suffers badly from the cliche anime actions of either a boy or girl (or both) when there's any sort of physical interaction between them, no matter how unintentional or innocent. Although it doesn't force us to watch projectile nosebleeds, we're subjected to all the other sort of yelling, stuttering, stammering, whining, complaining, wailing, arms flapping about like a hummingbird, mouths turning into giant squares, and face turning beet red. This sort of nonsense ruins every single scene that would otherwise contain pleasant, light-hearted contact. Every scene, without fail. You can't help be... See full review

Your lie in April

Apr 16, 2020

This was a fantastic show, but it's not at all light-hearted. I feel like I've been beaten up now that I finished it. I don't want to give any spoilers, but here are some general reasons you might not want to watch it. Don't watch if you are sensitive to child abuse. This is difficult to explain, because I assume all of us are sensitive to it, but if it's a particularly sensitive topic for you, it might be better to skip this show. It's not so much seeing the actual child abuse itself that's big problem, it's the emotional effects on the child. Don't watch if you dislike classical music. Piano music is... See full review

Spice and Wolf

Apr 15, 2020

This show had everything going for it. It's SOL and romance, with a cute animal girl and unusual setting. Put all of these together and I would have given it a 9/10, except for such a cringe-worthy episode it brought the story crashing down. I'd like to write this without spoilers, but it's impossible to discuss the big problem without specifics. This review is for both seasons. SPOILERS*** First, there's some minor nudity at the beginning, the sort of nudity you find with a department store mannequin. The wolf goddess is found in human form, without having obtained clothes, and we are shown her almost... See full review
