What a letdown. The end was so godawful it ruined what was otherwise a tolerable show.

Attack on Titan The Final Season

Jul 29, 2021

I realize that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but nevertheless I'm flabbergasted that people adore this season. The impression I have about the writer is that he or she became bored after the first 3 seasons and took the persona of a dull emo kid with ADHD for the final season.   The time jumps are overwhelming and confusing, and the flow of the show is decimated because of it. Our attention is frequently diverted from the actual story in favor of spending considerable effort trying to understand where in the timeline the action is taking place. Sometimes the time jumps go back far enough... See full review

A Silent Voice

Jun 11, 2021

Those are 2 hours of my life I can never get back. We're forced to trudge through almost the entire thing with little of interest other than a poor deaf girl getting treated like shit for no other reason than she's deaf. Then we have a contrived ending that's designed to bring out the tissue box but is unsatisfactory in any other way. I have to assume that the stellar ratings are something akin to the emperor's new clothes. While I understand that different people have different tastes, there's simply no way this should have a 4.6/5 rating. I know that most people would't be as harsh as me and give it a... Reikenzan: Eichi e no Shikaku

Mar 27, 2021

Just horrifying. The story is barely sufficient to satisfy a 10 year old. But, worse than that, the translation is almost incomprehensible, and following the story (whatever there was of it) was at times impossible. Do yourself a favor and avoid this dumpster fire.

Suppose a Kid from the Last Dungeon Boonies Moved to a Starter Town

Mar 24, 2021

This anime is butchered by the unforgivably annoying harem fighting over who's going to marry the male mc. Beyond that, it's full of plot holes and inconsistencies that are fatal to any chance of it being a good show. However, I'm guessing that its target audience is pre-15 years old, so maybe that demographic really enjoys it. It's a shame that the show wound up so poorly made, because it seemed that there was a good story underneath the turd we were served.

Wise Man’s Grandchild

Mar 22, 2021

I'm writing this more as a warning than a review. If you're bothered by anime girl soprano-speak, this anime will test your patience. It had a number of females talking in that ghastly way, and it almost made the show unwatchable. Also, if you're bothered by the rapid stuttering, wild arm waving, blushing and/or full red face, turning away from each other, denial of any interest in each other either now or until everyone currently alive ceases to exist, that absolutely explodes from a boy and girl when someone so much as hints that there might be a love interest between them, then steel yourself. The only... See full review

Knight's & Magic

Mar 22, 2021

This anime targets a younger audience, perhaps 13 and younger - at least I hope that was the intent. If you're an adult expecting an adult show, you'll be disappointed. If you don't mind watching simpler anime, then this is a pretty good show. Since I'm reviewing this as an adult, I rate it 6/10. The writing is simply too illogical and silly to give it a score any higher than that. If I were early teens, I'd probably give it an 8/10.

Nodame Cantabile: Finale

Mar 11, 2021

You fall in love with the first 23 episodes of this anime for 3 main reasons: Nodame, Chiaki, and the music. However, what elevated the show to something great is Nodame, and her endearing, quirky, childish personality. There's a reason why her name is in the title. She's hyperactive, almost unable to care for herself, and a significant percentage of her speech is devoted to single, unintelligible one-word outbursts of emotion. However, she's been nearly stripped of her vitality in this Finale. It's dreary and she's simply not entertaining. Any character could play her role. This morph had already started... Actually, I Am…

Mar 7, 2021

This anime has received quite a few poor reviews because "it's been done before". I don't believe that's a valid reason to knock a show. I like pizza, particularly pepperoni and mushroom. I order that type from just about any pizza place I eat at, and as long as it's tasty I'm happy. Maybe the sauce or the crust are different at all of them, but they're all pretty similar. Nevertheless, I like them as long as they taste good. I would never complain about a new restaurant that made pizza that tasted somewhat close to other pizzas that have already been done before. Complaining that a show is... See full review

Gleipnir

Dec 18, 2020

I can only assume that the reviewers who are giving low scores for this anime fail to remember that it's sci-fi/fantasy. For example, there's no reason to knock the show because it has a very large, absurd, powerful dog doll as one of the characters. It's fantasy, so the writers can make the thing look however they want. But even if these people demand some logic about the dog doll, it's possible that an explanation will be provided in season 2, assuming there is one. The story of the doll is touched upon, but I don't want to say anything about it for fear of a spoiler. The only truly annoying part for me... See full review

Katanagatari

Dec 17, 2020

I can't understand how this show is rated so high. I'll admit that most of the story is pretty good, although it's a bit difficult to follow without knowing Japan's geographical regions and historical periods. However, and this is a big however, the ending is garbage. I don't want to get into details and spoil anything, but it really poisoned the entire anime for me, which is unfortunate. Finally, and I rarely even notice such things, the animation is amateurish. It didn't bother me too much, but if you care about such a thing, you might want to stay away from this.

Xam'd: Lost Memories

Nov 26, 2020

Xam'd tried hard, but it was too confusing. It had many subplots that simply disappeared with no satisfactory explanation or conclusion, and the ending was the same. It didn't seem that the ending was rushed, it was just incoherent. The show was 26 episodes and left far too many questions than answers. Anyway, it's not horrible, but be advised that you'll be investing your time into 26 episodes of a fairly baffling show.

Revolutionary Girl Utena

Nov 22, 2020

Be warned, you'll never be able to recover the 15 or so hours wasted on watching this thing. It's like watching some of the first Disney movies. You can see how people would have enjoyed Snow White and Pinocchio for many years, but now it's painful to sit through them.

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Part II

Nov 21, 2020

Season 2 took a dip in quality compared to S1. The first season was light in tone, despite Myne's physical frailty. It was a pleasant slice of life. *** Spoilers below. However, the second season turned menacing. When the nobles and the church became major players in the story, we had an event such as a knight pulling out a knife to stab Myne's eyes out. We have nobles treating her like dog shit so that she needs to grovel so as not to antagonize them more than what her mere presence already does. I don't want to get any more specific, but you get the idea.  Another thing that detracts from this... See full review

Spirited Away

Nov 4, 2020

The problem with this movie is that it suffers from its age. It's like watching Snow White. Sure, it's a masterpiece and if everyone says the same about Spirited Away I'll accept that, but it's pretty tough to watch it now that animated movies have become so sophisticated. And it isn't just the animation I'm referring to, it's the old style of storytelling. Studio Ghibli made this as if was 1940 rather than 2001. For example, the girl who needs to descend a long crooked flight of stairs but is so frightened she can barely move. Then she almost falls through a rotten board and involuntarily starts running... Re:Creators

Oct 24, 2020

Many people have negatively commented that this anime is similar to Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night, etc., and this is true. However, with thousands and thousands of shows already out there, it's hard for a new one not to be similar to another in some way. Also, I don't see the problem with being similar to an anime as fantastic as Fate/Zero. In any event, it's similar, not the same. *Some spoilers to follow* What sets this apart from the many Fate series is that the people who arrive in our world are creations of anime and manga artists. The interesting point of this is that the "createds"... See full review

High School DxD

Oct 22, 2020

The main reason I'm writing a comment on an anime that already has so many reviews is to assure anyone who's been reading those prior reviews that the male mc, Issie, is not a "pervert". He's a high school boy who's fascinated by boobs. In other words, he's the same as 99.99 percent of every straight high school boy who's ever lived. (Tbh, I'm not sure the fascination with breasts ever ceases, but it's definitely at its peak at the earlier stages of puberty). I suppose what puts people off about the mc is that he's proudly saying the same things that every other boy is thinking. In no way... See full review

A Place Further Than the Universe

Oct 16, 2020

Cute girls being cute, doing cute things. This sums up A Place Further Than the Universe. There's nothing wrong with that, and I'm not one bit sorry I watched this anime, but I don't understand all the love it has gotten. Some very minor spoilers will follow. There are so many plot holes, my enjoyment of the show was impacted. For instance, right off the bat we see that one of the girls has saved a million yen to help pay for the cost of the trip. However, inexplicably, she hasn't spent any of it by the end - not even to pay for a plane ticket. The girls are ostensibly in high school, approximately 16... See full review

Heroic Age

Oct 16, 2020

This is sort of a hybrid of Battlestar Galactica and any generic mecha, but with very lackluster graphics and a subpar story. The story's sin isn't just that it's the same as what's been done 1,000 times already, but that it's confusing as hell. I won't attempt to explain all this because, frankly, I'm not a very good writer and I'd confuse you even more than the show does. I should disclose that I dropped it after 6 episodes. I wanted to stop watching after 2, but I almost always follow the 5 episode rule. I have no idea what made me watch the 6th. Anyway, maybe the sea of confusion parted after that, and... Birdy the Mighty: Decode

Oct 12, 2020

I couldn't keep watching this beyond 3 episodes. The problems begin with the animation. Now, normally the quality of animation doesn't factor into whether I like an anime or not, but occasionally it does, and this was one of those occasions. It looks like it was made in the 1980's, but loooow budget 1980's. A typical Scooby-Doo episode looks better than this. Speaking of Scooby - watching Birdy reminded me of watching cartoons on Saturday morning when I was a kid. Not that a show at that level is necessarily unfit for an adult, because I watch some of them with my son and enjoy them. But they belong in... See full review

Tokyo Ravens

If you like magic anime you'll like this. Like other reviewers have said, it has plot holes, but all in all it's pretty entertaining. The end is pretty dumb though. I'd rate it 3/10, so if crappy last episodes bother you, then maybe avoid this show.

Gosick

Sep 24, 2020

Let me first say I dropped this show after 9 episodes, so take these comments with a grain of salt. Gosick isn't a bad show by any means. If you love detective stories, you'll probably enjoy this. However, here's my problem with this anime, which is the same problem I have with most detective shows: the solution to the mystery is so convoluted it can only be made by the actor. There's no possible way for the viewer to even come close to solving it him or herself. The "detective" is also a tsundere, and this is very annoying. She doesn't beat on the male MC though, so I didn't take off another 2... See full review

Angels of Death

Sep 15, 2020

Be warned that this anime is relentlessly dark af, and there's no humor whatsoever to give you a break. The reason I took off 2 points is because they went down this bizarre rabbit hole trying to work god into the story. First, it was a poor fit and second, they did a rotten job of it. Really, it just didn't make sense.

Grimoire of Zero

Sep 8, 2020

There are a lot of annoying inconsistencies in this anime, but it still manages to be enjoyable. Know that it's geared toward a younger audience. Not that older adults can't enjoy it - just as we can enjoy Naruto. But realize before going in that this is what I would classify as a YA anime. I won't watch this again, but as you can see from my 8/10 rating, I thought it was well worth seeing.

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War?

Sep 8, 2020

There's nothing wrong with this second season of Kaguya-sama, and if it hadn't followed season 1 perhaps I'd have rated it higher. However, whereas S1 was first and foremost a brilliant comedy, S2 morphed into more of a slice of life. It's almost silly to place these comments in the S2 review section, because nobody will watch S2 without first watching S1, and if you watch S1 you're certain to watch S2 regardless of what I write. I guess the reason I'm doing this is so that you won't go into S2 with your expectations as high as I did and wind up disappointed. Realize that it'll be a bit of a different show... See full review

Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

Sep 8, 2020

Prior to watching this anime I thought that The Devil is a Part Timer was the funniest show I had seen. Now I rank Devil at #2. Kaguya-sama doesn't provide better humor, but it gives us more of it. Each episode is dense with the comedy that these kids serve up thanks to each of their efforts to avoid letting the other one know that they're romantically interested in him or her. Every thought, every step, is analyzed to determine if it shows the slightest love interest. They are both determined to force the other to make the first move. Very minor spoiler in next paragraph. . . . For example, the girl ... See full review

Goblin Slayer: Goblin's Crown

Aug 2, 2020

SPOILERS ahead I'm not going to write a full review because first, I'm not a good writer and second, I don't want to spend anymore time with this anime than I must. I'm only writing this brief warning because I don't want you to lose 85 minutes of your life that could be spent watching something better. Just pick any anime at random and it'll be better. This was atrocious. The only thing enjoyable was that you get to see Goblin Slayer and the rest of the crew again, but the movie is so bad I want to purge it from my memory so that it doesn't stain the series. Bunny Drop

Jul 23, 2020

I won't provide a summary of this story, because many others have already done so. What you should know about this anime is that you will most likely enjoy it if you are, or were, a parent or primary caregiver. If not, if you're still young enough to not really care about kids, or if you don't really care about them regardless of your age, this show will bore you. It brought back a lot of memories for me and I liked it quite a lot, but there wasn't a whole lot to it. The girl was incredibly cute and the stand-in dad was a good guy for stepping up to take care of her, so it was easy to like the main... See full review

Interspecies Reviewers

Jul 6, 2020

Without a doubt, this is the lewdest anime I've ever seen. It's also extremely funny, to the extent that I was laughing out loud numerous times each episode with no one else in the room. If you are bothered by nude animated boobs, don't watch this for even a single minute. If you are prudish about sex, likewise run from this show. If you watch it you'll wind up spending a couple days in your safe space panic room. Very slight spoiler ahead I knew this anime was going to be good almost immediately, when the elf (Zel) and human (Stunk) were debating whether a very cute 500 year old elf was more desirable...
