Mitsutoshi KUBOTA

Mitsutoshi Kubota, born in 1960 in Kikugawa, Shizuoka Prefecture, is a Japanese producer and colorist. He joined production studio SHAFT around 1980 or 1981 as a colorist. As a sub-contracting studio at the time, SHAFT mainly handled services for other companies, which is where Kubota debuted with color design work with Hitotsuboshi-ke no Ultra Baasan in 1982. In 1995, Kubota was promoted to managing director of the studio and began to do production management and producing work as SHAFT's animation production capabilities flourished in the late 90s.

One of the biggest collaborations for SHAFT during this time was Legend of Crystania: The Chaos Ring episode 2, a series produced by Triangle Staff that outsourced this particular episode to SHAFT. Triangle Staff's president, Yoshimi Asari, and director Ryuutarou Nakamura pesonally delivered the storyboards to Kubota and the studio. Nakamura said that he wanted to collaborate more with the studio in the future, which they did throughout the next decade; and eventually, Kubota served as animation producer for a series and short film project with Nakamura at the studio. After Nakamura's passing, Kubota was one of the speakers at the "Playback Ryuutarou Nakamura" event celebrating Nakamura's life and his works in 2016, alongside critic Ryouta Fujitsu and longtime Nakamura collaborator Chiaki J. Konaka.

When founder Hiroshi Wakao retired as president of the company in 2004, Kubota succeeded him. However, he planned to radically change the studio with the goal of procuring a unique identity amongst the studios in the anime industry. The core element in this rebranding was the involvement of director Akiyuki Shimbo, whom SHAFT had done some outsourcing for in the past and whom Kubota was keenly aware of, as the foundation for what would eventually become "SHAFT style." With Shimbo's involvement also came the creation of DIGITAL@SHAFT, which would serve as the company's digital coloring and compositing department, later also including certain visual effects and CG production services.

Although credited as either some form of producer or planner since taking on the role of president of the studio, Kubota continues to be actively involved in the production process of some of SHAFT's works. For The Quintessential Quintuplets∽animator Kazuya Shiotsuki mentioned that Kubota directly supervised the coloring and drawings for the key visuals and other such materials.
