Ikuhara truly is a legend. His work always has a deeper, meaningful message and such a unique style. He always touches upon important topics, which many other anime don't dare to address, but he does it in such a elegant way. And no one can deny his artistic talent, looking at Revolutionary Girl Utena for example, where his symbolic beauty adds this meaningful and important tone to the whole story. I don't think someone's work has ever resonated with me that much. His criticism of society is very relevant and done in superb way. He really is a leftist legend.
As director, he made a lot of awkward and creepy decisions.
I love this director! His works are truly unique in the world of anime. Even if sometimes his message may be difficult to interpret, his works are really fun and visually appealing!
Now I don't throw around the word "overrated" a lot, but...
