"Dirty wench! You stole my necklace!” “Unless I knew where your necklace was, I wouldn’t have been able to take it.” As an illegitimate child, Laritte’s biggest sin was being born. In the year she became an adult, she was sent to marry the ghost duke who was rumored to be dead. Her miserable life seemed to get worse and worse, however her life changed when the duke came back alive. “Madam, how do you like it?” Kind servants, “You have enough luxury to buy some residences in the capital.” “…no one will be able to look down on you anymore.” And the empire’s devoted and murderous duke. It was already too late for those who tormented Laritte to regret.
A calm story about discovering oneself partnered with a beautiful artstyle that just shouts 'cottage core', When The Count's Illegitimate Daughter Gets Married is the fantasy romance manhwa we never knew we needed in this genre. The first thing that stood out to me was the male lead. He isn't white!! BRO it is so rare to see a male lead with some color to their skin (aside from their blushing cheeks) that isn't the second lead in this genre and I love it! Secondly, the first chapter is quite brutal and shows an almost feral female lead that clearly is the victim of maltreatment at the hands of her adoptive family. I know this is an age old requirement to be part of this genre but the fact that she went rabid to protect herself from getting beaten up was when I knew how interesting she would be as an FL. An FL who knows what it's like to suffer will not hesitate to do the most debasing of actions if it guarantees their survival in a situation. I think that this type of strong female lead isn't as common as the calculating or cunning FLs are so she's very much welcome. There is some political intrigue in the plot, once the ML joins the story, but we can see the FL surviving on the bare minimum in a broken down villa in the middle of the mountains. Talk about cottage core in a genre! And it's not even the cute surviving, where they have a small town and they can make friends with the villagers; the FL here literally eats potatoes and resells furniture to have something to eat every day. The art is beautifully done and her clothes are styled befitting her white hair and blue eyes. The color in the manhwa is soft, like freshly fallen snow highlighting a fairy tale story, and it helps in setting the idyllic scene beautifully. There is brutality, yes, but at the same time, there is that gentle fragility to each frame that heightens the newfound relationships and life that the FL and ML will lead. Although I'm not one hundred percent sold on the story just yet, I'm excited to see what the plot and the characters will bring to the table! Reviewed at Chapter 12
I love how calm thinking and strong the FL is in this manga. Plus the development of the romance between the two isn't inconsistent, taking one step forward and two steps back like many i've read. I defs recommend to anyone who is looking for a cute romance between a cool thinking angel and a kind and caring partner.
